Edward Buscombe provides an illuminating guide to a hundred key films of the genre, from Broken Arrow to The Wild Bunch by way of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, A Fistful of Dollars, The Magnificent Seven and The Searchers. Each entry includes a plot synopsis, major credits, and a commentary on the film’s significance, together with its production and exhibition history. Edward Buscombe’s introduction to the volume discusses the criteria for selecting a mere hundred essential Westerns out of the thousands that have been made since the birth of cinema. He considers the relative weight to be attached to the acknowledged great directors of the genre, such as John Ford and Sam Peckinpah, and to lesser known but significant figures such as Delmer Daves. He takes stock of the contribution of the great Western stars, including John Wayne, James Stewart and Clint Eastwood. And he argues for a selection that takes into account Westerns of the silent era, B-Westerns and singing cowboys, and those Westerns made outside America. [Taken from back cover.] ISBN: 1844571122

Beginning with the history of Shakespeare on film, from Olivier's and Branagh's Hamlet, contributors examine screen versions of literary classics, from Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and Louisa May Alcott's Little Women to Thomas Keneally's Schindler's Ark and Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting. Adaptations goes on to consider adaptation in reverse: How writers like Virginia Woolf incorporated cinematic elements into their work, and explains why there had to be a novel of Jane Campion's The Piano. Contributors examine adaptations from comics to film, such as the Batman movies, Star Trek's incarnations as a long-running tv series, and then as a sequence of movies, and 101 Dalmations' [sic] move from children's novel to cartoon to live-action film." - BOOK BLURB Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 226-238) and index ISBN: 041516737X (hbk); 0415167388 (pbk); 041516737X (hardcover : alk. paper); 0415167388 (pbk : alk. paper) LON: 14255526 Contents: Part 1: an overview -- Adaptations: the contemporary dilemmas / Imelda Whelehan; Part 2: from text to screen -- Introduction / Deborah Cartmell -- The Shakespeare on screen industry / Deborah Cartmell -- Conservative Austen, radical Austen: Sense and Sensibility from text to screen / Julian North -- From Emma to Clueless: taste, pleasure and the scene of history / Esther Sonnet -- Imagining the puritan body: the 1995 cinematic version of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter / Roger Bromley -- Four Little Women: three films and a novel / Pat Kirkham and Sarah Warren -- Will Hollywood never learn? Titles covered were released between 1973 and 2010, a period coinciding with the revival of the long-dormant Australian film industry in the early 1970s, and continuing into the second wave of genre production spurred by the international success of the 2005 chiller Wolf Creek, The Cars That Ate Paris, The Last Wave, Roadgames, Razorback, Outback Vampires, Queen of the Damned, Black Water, and The Reef are among the titles represented. Each film is covered in a chapter that includes a cast and credits list, release information, contemporary reviews and DVD availability, as well as a synopsis and in-depth notes about the story, filmmaking techniques, acting performances, recurring themes and motifs, and overall effectiveness of the film as a work of horror. Authorship and the films of David Lynch : aesthetic receptions in contemporary Hollywood / Antony Todd London: I.B. Tauris, 2012. Call No: 81LYN TOD Author: Todd, Antony Source: UK Place: London Publisher: I.B. Tauris PubDate: 2012 PhysDes: ix, 181 p. : ill. ; 24 cm Subject: AESTHETICS; AUTEUR THEORY; LYNCH, DAVID; DUNE (US, David Lynch, 1984); BLUE VELVET (US, David Lynch, 1986); TWIN PEAKS [TV] (US, David Lynch & others, 1990-1991); MULHOLLAND DRIVE (US, David Lynch, 2001) Summary: "This fresh contribution to studies on authorship and film explores the ways in which shared and disputed opinions on aesthetic quality, originality and authorial essense have shaped receptions of David Lynch's films. it is also the first book to approach Lynch as a figure composed through language, history and text.
Antony Todd traces the development of Lynch's career from cult obscurity with Eraserhead to star auteur through the release of Blue Velvet, as well as the television event of the early 1990s, Twin Peaks. He investigates how Lynch's idiosyncratic style introduced the term 'Lynchian' to the colloquial speech of new Hollywood and helped establish Lynch as the leading light among contemporary American auteurs. Through the evidence of critical and promotional ephemera and the texts carrying Lynch's name, Todd explores contemporary manners and attitudes for artistic reputation building. He also reviews the standards by which Lynch's reputation was dismantled following the release of Wild at Heart and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, only to be reassembled once more through films such as Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr. and INLAND EMPIRE.
This book also ventures beyond its empirical findings by addressing authorship concerns pertaining to the ways in which, and to whom, the contemporary auteur has meaning. In its account of the experiences at play in the encounter between ephemera, text and reader, Authorship and the Films of David Lynch explores how authors functions for pleasure in the modern filmgoer's everyday consumption of films."-BOOK BLURB Notes: includes bibliographical references; includes index ISBN: 9781848855809 Contents: -- introduction -- 1.Towards a Textual Historicity -- 2.David Lynch: The Making of a Post-classical Auteur -- 3.Meanings and Authorships in Dune -- 4.Critical Theory and `Cruel Jokes': Principles of Ethics and Pleasure, and the Reception of Blue Velvet -- 5.Twin Peaks: The Rise and Fall of a Public Auteur -- 6.Brand Lynch -- 7.Receiving Mulholland Dr.: `A Contemporary Film Noir Directed by David Lynch' -- conclusion -- notes -- bibliography -- index --

Autism in film and television : on the island / edited by Murray Pomerance and R. Barton Palmer Austin: University of Texas Press, April 2022. Barton Edition: 2022 Place: Austin Publisher: University of Texas Press PubDate: April 2022 PhysDes: 324 pages ; 23.5 cm Subject: PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN FILMS; STAR TREK - THE NEXT GENERATION [TV] (US, 1987-1994); LIFE, ANIMATED (FR/US, Roger Ross Williams, 2016); RAIN MAN (US, Barry Levinson, 1988); GOOD DOCTOR, THE [TV] ( US, 2017 - ); BIG SHORT, THE (US, Adam McKay, 2015); STRANGER THINGS [TV] (US, 2016); SOCIAL NETWORK, THE (US, David Fincher, 2010); NIGHTCRAWLER (US, Dan Gilroy, 2014); ACCOUNTANT, THE (US, Gavin O'Connor, 2016); BEING THERE (US, Hal Ashby, 1979); PHANTOM THREAD (US, Paul Thomas Anderson, 2017); DAVID AND LISA (US, Frank Perry, 1962); MARY POPPINS (US, Robert Stevenson, 1964) Summary: Global awareness of autism has skyrocketed since the 1980s, and popular culture has caught on, with film and television producers developing ever more material featuring autistic characters. Autism in Film and Television brings together more than a dozen essays on depictions of autism, exploring how autistic characters are signified in media and how the reception of these characters informs societal understandings of autism.
Editors Murray Pomerance and R. Barton Palmer have assembled a pioneering examination of autism’s portrayal in film and television. Contributors consider the various means by which autism has been expressed in films such as Phantom Thread, Mercury Rising, and Life Animated and in television and streaming programs including Atypical, Stranger Things, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Community. Across media, the figure of the brilliant, accomplished, and “quirky” autist has proven especially appealing. Film and television have thus staked out a progressive position on neurodiversity by insisting on screen time for autism but have done so while frequently ignoring the true diversity of autistic experience. As a result, this volume is a welcome celebration of nonjudgmental approaches to disability, albeit one that is still freighted with stereotypes and elisions. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9781477324912 Contents: -- -- Preface: Two Meditations: Who Am I? Or avocados? During the heady years of tax incentives and 10BA it didn't much matter to Australian investors where they put their surplus funds. For the Australian film industry, booming after the creative revival of the 1970s, the next decade became one of confusion and controversy. In THE AVOCADO PLANTATION, David Stratton gives us a comprehensive look at the making of 270 film features between 1980 and 1990. He discusses the big name attractions - GALLIPOLI, THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER, MAD MAX 2, CROCODILE DUNDEE, MAN OF FLOWERS, SWEETIE - and a host of lesser known films. Adventure films, horror films, love stories, comedies, they're all here: the smash hits, the turkets and the quality movies appreciated by discerning audiences. Stratton tells the behind-the-scenes stories of how the films were made - or in some casxes, un-made. He talks with directors such as Peter Weir, George Miller and Paul Cox, as well as producers, writers, actors, and crew members. Their reflections and revelations form a major part of THE AVOCADO PLANTATION." [Taken from book jacket] Notes: Includes index ISBN: 0732902509 LON: 7520974 Donation: Simon Wincer ID2: 255

This new book, published in the BBFC's centenary year, traces the fascinating history of film classification, censorship and controversy in Britain, and marks an unparalleled collaboration between the BBFC and leading film critics, historians and cultural commentators. The book also features unique case studies, written by BBFC staff, focusing on significant films that have provoked debate and controversy both within the BBFC and more widely - Battleship Potemkin, The Snake Pit, A Clockwork Orange, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and many more." - taken from back cover. Taking a long historical perspective, this book is based on a study of a selection of Australian documentary films produced by and about Aboriginal peoples since the early twentieth century. The films signpost significant shifts in Anglo-Australian attitudes about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and trace the growth of the Indigenous filmmaking industry in Australia.
Used as a form of resistance to the imposition of colonialism, filmmaking gave Aboriginal people greater control over their depiction on documentary film and the medium has become an avenue to contest widely held assumptions about a peaceful colonial settlement. This study considers how developments in camera and film stock technologies along with filmic techniques influenced the depiction of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The films are also examined within their historical context, employing them to gauge how social attitudes, access to funding and political pressures influenced their production values. The book aims to expose the course of race relations in Australia through the decolonisation of documentary film by Aboriginal filmmakers, tracing their struggle to achieve social justice and self-representation. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9781789974782 Contents: Acknowledgements -- Cultural Warning and Acknowledgement -- Abbreviations -- Introduction -- Aboriginalities -- Media Ecology -- The Longue Durée -- Decolonising the Documentary Film in Australia -- Stages of the Journey -- Part I Exotic Subjects, 1901–1966 -- Chapter 1 The Last of Their Kind: Aboriginal Life in Central Australia (1901) -- Chapter 2 Physical Traits: Life in Central Australia (1931) -- Chapter 3 Benign and Iconic: Aborigines of the Sea Coast (1950) -- Chapter 4 The “Last” of Their Kind, Again: Desert People (1967) -- Part II Voices for Change, 1957–1972 -- Chapter 5 Not Dying Out Quietly: Warburton Aborigines (1957) -- Chapter 6 A Discomforting Assimilation: The Change At Groote (1968) -- Chapter 7 Challenging White Indifference: Ningla-A-Na (Hungry for Our Land) (1972) -- Part III Counting the Cost, 1978–1987 -- Chapter 8 Telling My Story My Way: My Survival As An Aboriginal (1978) -- Chapter 9 On Being Stolen: Lousy Little Sixpence (1983) -- Chapter 10 Picking Up the Broken Pieces: Link-Up Diary (1987) -- Part IV Digital Directors: Decolonising Documentary Film, 2002–2017 -- Chapter 11 Setting the Records Straight: Whispering in Our Hearts: The Mowla Bluff Massacre (2002) -- Chapter 12 The Sounds of Spaces Between: Willaberta Jack (2007) -- Chapter 13 Breaking the Drought at the Sydney Film Festival: We Don’t Need a Map (2017), Occupation Native (2017), In My Own Words (2017)and Connecting to Country (2017) -- Bibliography -- Index

Parish and Pitts note that Lee performed more genre roles than any other actor in film history. The authors attempt to trace the progress and evolution of Lee's career, paying particular attention to his little-known, non-genre roles, using quotations from the actor's numerous published interviews over the years. Parish and Pitt also highlight that Lee's first horror film role was the psychological drama "Alias John Preston"

Cinema in the digital age / Rombes, Nicholas New York: New York Columbia University Press, 2017. Call No: 62 ROM Author: Rombes, Nicholas Edition: Revised edition Place: London; New York Publisher: New York Columbia University Press PubDate: 2017 PhysDes: 22 b& w illustrations Subject: DIGITAL CINEMA; NOSTALGIA; FILMMAKING; DISTRIBUTION; DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION; MEDIA AND THE CINEMA; EDITING; PHILOSOPHY AND THE CINEMA; VIDEO FORMATS; PARANORMAL ACTIVITY : THE MARKED ONES ( US, Christopher Landon, 2014); THEORY; SPECTATORSHIP; BLUE VELVET (US, David Lynch, 1986); APPLE; COMPUTER GENERATED IMAGERY; POSTMODERNISM AND THE CINEMA; FORMATS; CINEMATOGRAPHY Summary: Have digital technologies transformed cinema into a new art, or do they simply replicate and mimic analogue, film-based cinema? Newly revised and expanded to take the latest developments into account, Cinema in the Digital Age examines the fate of cinema in the wake of the digital revolution. Nicholas Rombes considers Festen (1998), The Blair Witch Project (1999), Timecode (2000), Russian Ark (2002), and The Ring (2002), among others. Haunted by their analogue pasts, these films are interested not in digital purity but rather in imperfection and mistakes-blurry or pixilated images, shaky camera work, and other elements that remind viewers of the human behind the camera. With a new introduction and new material, this updated edition takes a fresh look at the historical and contemporary state of digital cinema. It pays special attention to the ways in which nostalgia for the look and feel of analogue disrupts the aesthetics of the digital image, as well as how recent films such as The Social Network (2010) and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)-both shot digitally-have disguised and erased their digital foundations. The book also explores new possibilities for writing about and theorizing film, such as randomization. Notes: Includes bibliographical references. Connected, or What it means to live in the network society / Steven Shaviro Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2003. Call No: 735.1 SHA Author: Shaviro, Steven Source: US Place: Minneapolis Publisher: University of Minnesota Press PubDate: 2003 PhysDes: xiii, 289 p. ; 22 cm Series: Electronic Mediations ; v. 9 Subject: VIDEODROME (CN, David Cronenberg, 1983); NEW ROSE HOTEL (US, Abel Ferrara, 1998); ALPHAVILLE (FR, Jean-Luc Godard, 1965); SPACE IS THE PLACE (US, Sun Ra,1972); MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, THE (UK, Nicholas Roeg, 1976); DAWN OF THE DEAD (US, George A. Romero, 1979); BLADE RUNNER (US, Ridley Scott, 1982); MATRIX, THE (US, Larry Wachowski & Andy Wachowski, 1999); EMPIRE (US, Andy Warhol, 1964); BURROUGHS, WILLIAM Summary: "Shaviro argues that our strange new world is increasingly being transformed in ways, and by devices, that seem to come out of the pages of science fiction, even while the world itself is becoming a futuristic landscape. The result is that science fiction provides the most useful social theory, the only form that manages to be as radical as reality itself. Original and compelling, Connected shows how the continual experimentation of science fiction, like science and technology themselves, conjures the invisible social and economic forces that surround us." -- BOOK BLURB Notes: Includes notes, bibliographical references, filmography and index. It reworks Pasolini's landmark concept of 'the cinema of poetry' to look at the transformation of film form in its encounter with society, the sacred, the subjective and the presence of the camera. In the 1970s, the influential forms of a cinema of poetry are analysed in key features by Altman, Herzog, Malick, Scorsese, Weir, Von Trotta and Tarkovsky while in the 1980s and 1990s the emergence of new filmmakers has meant a diffusion of different cinemas of poetry using new techniques and new poetries. Of key importance here is the work of Kieslowski, Lynch, Egoyan, Campion, Greenaway, Zhang Yimou, Tran Anh Hung and Wong Kar-Wai, as well as the reinvention of science fiction and film noir in American genre."

It displays the rich diversity of film production in the country, and in doing so highlights a number of specific contexts - Maori, documentary and short filmmaking, literary adaptations, the development of the national Film Commission and Archive, marketing and censorship, in addition to explorations into the place of bicultural relations, spirituality, masculinity and disability - that have created a cinema of global significance. Featuring critical accounts of internationally-acclaimed features like The Piano and Once Were Warriors, as well as the growth of the national infrastructure that made such films possible, Contemporary New Zealand Cinema is the most thorough study available of a vibrant filmmaking culture. The book also includes a fully comprehensive filmography detailing all New Zealand feature and television films."--BOOK JACKET Notes: Filmography: p.[239]-253

David Fincher : interviews / edited by Laurence F. Knapp Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 2014. Call No: 81FINCH DAV Source: US Place: Jackson Publisher: University Press of Mississippi PubDate: 2014 PhysDes: xxxiii, 233 pages ; 24 cm Series: Conversations with filmmakers series Subject: FINCHER, DAVID Summary: "David Fincher (b. 1962) did not go to film school and hates being defined as an auteur. He prefers to see himself as a craftsman, dutifully going about the art and business of making film. Trouble is, it's hard to be self-effacing when you are the director responsible for Se7en, Fight Club, and The Social Network. Along with Quentin Tarantino, Fincher is the most accomplished of the Generation X filmmakers to emerge in the early 1990s. This collection of interviews highlights Fincher's unwavering commitment to his craft as he evolved from an entrepreneurial music video director (Fincher helped Madonna become the undisputed queen of MTV) into an enterprising feature filmmaker. Fincher landed his first Hollywood blockbuster at twenty-seven with Alien3, but that film, handicapped by cost overruns and corporate mismanagement, taught Fincher that he needed absolute control over his work. Once he had it, with Se7en, he achieved instant box-office success and critical acclaim, as well as a close partnership with Brad Pitt that led to the cult favorite Fight Club. Fincher became circumspect in the 2000s after Panic Room, shooting ads and biding his time until Zodiac, when he returned to his mantra that "entertainment has to come hand in hand with a little bit of medicine. Some people go to the movies to be reminded that everything's okay. I don't make those kinds of movies. That, to me, is a lie. Everything's not okay." Zodiac reinvigorated Fincher, inspiring a string of films--The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Social Network, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo--that enthralled audiences and garnered his films dozens of Oscar nominations" -- BOOK BLURB Notes: Includes bibliographic references and index -- Includes filmography ISBN: 9781628460360 Donation: donated by Senses of Cinema, 2014 Contents: Machine generated contents note: Mother from Another Planet / John H. Call No: 744.6(73) BAL Author: Baldwin, James Edition: 2011 Place: New York Publisher: Vintage PubDate: 2011 PhysDes: 127 pages ; 21 cm Subject: RACIAL ISSUES AND THE CINEMA; BLACK CINEMA. US; ETHNIC GROUPS IN FILMS. USA; WELLES, ORSON; BIRTH OF A NATION, THE (US, David Wark Griffith, 1915); DEFIANT ONES, THE (US, Stanley Kramer, 1958); GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (US, Stanley Kramer, 1967); CHE! (US, Richard Fleischer, 1969); EXORCIST, THE (US, William Friedkin, 1973) Summary: From “the best essayist in this country” (The New York Times Book Review) comes an incisive book-length essay about racism in American movies that challenges the underlying assumptions in many of the films that have shaped our consciousness.
Baldwin’s personal reflections on movies gathered here in a book-length essay are also an appraisal of American racial politics. Offering a look at racism in American movies and a vision of America’s self-delusions and deceptions, Baldwin considers such films as In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and The Exorcist.
Here are our loves and hates, biases and cruelties, fears and ignorance reflected by the films that have entertained and shaped us. And here too is the stunning prose of a writer whose passion never diminished his struggle for equality, justice, and social change. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9780307275950

Documentary display : re-viewing nonfiction film and videos / Keith Beattie London: Wallflower, 2008. Call No: 761 BEA Author: Beattie, Keith Place: London Publisher: Wallflower PubDate: 2008 PhysDes: xiv, 187 p. ; 24 cm Subject: DOCUMENTARY FILMS; CINEMA-DIRECT; COMPILATION FILMS; IMAX; MONTAGE; NON-FICTION FILMS; BUNUEL, LUIS; GRIERSON, JOHN; MAYSLES, ALBERT & DAVID; PENNEBAKER, D. A.; VERTOV, DZIGA; VIGO, JEAN; DONT LOOK BACK (US, D.A. Pennebaker, 1967) Summary: "Not all documentary films and videos are sober depictions of the real world. Documentary representations can present expressive, entertaining and spectacular images. This book examines such innovative approaches as they occur within the process of 'documentary display' - a practice which emphasises the visual attractions of documentary representation. Works of documentary display explore modes of exhibitionistic 'showing' in which sensation is frequently the vehicle of cognition and knowledge. Such a display is analysed within the popular and prominent forms of found-footage film, 'rockumentary', the city film, nonfiction surf film and video, and certain views of natural science topics. This accessible and informed study - with its focus on entertaining, popular, spectacular and sensational froms of nonfiction representation - makes an important contribution to theoretical analyses of documentary film and video."--BOOK JACKET Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 155-181) and index. Documentary explorations : 15 interviews with film makers Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday, 1971. Call No: 761 LEV Author: Levin, G. Roy Place: Garden City, N.Y. Publisher: Doubleday PubDate: 1971 PhysDes: 420p. : ill. ; 21 cm Subject: DOCUMENTARY FILMS; WRIGHT, BASIL; ANDERSON, LINDSAY; CAWSTON, RICHARD; GARNETT, TONY; LOACH, KENNETH; FRANJU, GEORGES; ROUCH, JEAN; STORCK, HENRI; VAN DYKE, WILLARD; LEACOCK, RICHARD; PENNEBAKER, D. A.; MAYSLES, ALBERT & DAVID; BARRON, ARTHUR; WISEMAN, FREDERICK; PINCUS, ED; SHAMBERG, MICHAEL Summary: "Perhaps no other art form brings art and reality in any closer juxtaposition than the documentary film. Through the lenses of the documentary filmmaker, we have seen firsthand the excitement of rock concerts, the realities of our political leaders, and the lifestyles of exotic cultures. Few people would argue with the almost limitless potential of the medium, but have we seriously considered how "objective" these films really are - or can be? Should the filmmaker be more concerned with social change or objective reality? In this volume, G. Roy Levin discusses these questions, along with a whole range of aesthetic and political considerations, with the most prominent documentary filmmakers of the world. The directors include the Maysles brothers; Frederick Wiseman, responsible for Titicut Follies; Richard Leacock/D.A. Pennebaker, the team that produced Monterey Pop; and fourteen others, from England, France, Belgium and the U.S. The book includes a brief history of documentary film, as well as exhaustive filmographies on each director." -- BOOK BLURB Notes: Includes index; Bibliography: p.[405]-406 ISBN: 0385045905 LON: 14286490 URL status: URL: 'http://-'

The dynamic frame : camera movement in classical Hollywood / Patrick Keating New York; Chichester, UK: Columbia University Press, Call No: 233.6(73) KEA Author: Keting, Patrick Edition: 2019 Place: New York; Chichester, UK Publisher: Columbia University Press PhysDes: xi,350 pages : illustrated ; 24 cm Subject: BERKELEY, BUSBY; BORDWELL, DAVID; CAMERA ANGLES; CITIZEN KANE (US, Orson Welles, 1941); CONVERGENCE; FORD, JOHN; HAWKS, HOWARD; HITCHCOCK, ALFRED; LAST LAUGH, THE (G, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, 1924); MAMOULIAN, ROUBEN; MURNAU, FRIEDRICH WILHEL; PREMINGER, OTTO; SUNRISE (US, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, 1927); TOLAND, GREGG; VIDOR, KING; WELLES, ORSON Summary: The camera’s movement in a film may seem straightforward or merely technical. Yet skillfully deployed pans, tilts, dollies, cranes, and zooms can express the emotions of a character, convey attitude and irony, or even challenge an ideological stance. In The Dynamic Frame, Patrick Keating offers an innovative history of the aesthetics of the camera that examines how camera movement shaped the classical Hollywood style.
In careful readings of dozens of films, including Sunrise, The Grapes of Wrath, Rear Window, Sunset Boulevard, and Touch of Evil, Keating explores how major figures such as F. W. Murnau, Orson Welles, and Alfred Hitchcock used camera movement to enrich their stories and deepen their themes. Balancing close analysis with a broader poetics of camera movement, Keating uses archival research to chronicle the technological breakthroughs and the changing division of labor that allowed for new possibilities, as well as the shifting political and cultural contexts that inspired filmmakers to use technology in new ways. An original history of film techniques and aesthetics, The Dynamic Frame shows that the classical Hollywood camera moves not to imitate the actions of an omniscient observer but rather to produce the interplay of concealment and revelation that is an essential part of the exchange between film and viewer. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9780231190510 Contents: Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1.
