Adaptation industry : the cultural economy of contemporary literary adaptation / Simone Murray London: Routledge, 2013.
Call No: 753 MURAuthor: Murray, Simone Source: UKPlace: LondonPublisher: RoutledgePubDate: 2013PhysDes: 253 pages ; 23 cmSeries: ROUTLEDGE RESEARCH IN CULTURAL AND MEDIA STUDIES.Subject: ADAPTATIONS ; SCRIPTWRITING Summary: Adaptation constitutes the driving force of contemporary culture, with stories adapted across an array of media formats. However, adaptation studies has been concerned almost exclusively with textual analysis, in particular with compare-and-contrast studies of individual novel and film pairings. This has left almost completely unexamined crucial questions of how adaptations come to be made, what are the industries with the greatest stake in making them, and who the decision-makers are in the adaptation process. The Adaptation Industry re-imagines adaptation not as an abstract process, but as a material industry. It presents the adaptation industry as a cultural economy of six interlocking institutions, stakeholders and decision-makers all engaged in the actual business of adapting texts: authors; agents; publishers; book prize committees; scriptwriters; and screen producers and distributors. Through trading in intellectual property rights to cultural works, these six nodal points in the adaptation network are tightly interlinked, with success for one party potentially auguring for success in other spheres. But marked rivalries between these institutional forces also exist, with competition characterizing every aspect of the adaptation process. This book constructs an overdue sociology of contemporary literary adaptation, never losing sight of the material and institutional dimensions of this powerful process. -- Taken from the publishers siteISBN: 9780415710541Contents: Machine generated contents note: 1.What Are You Working On?: The Expanding Role of the Author in an Era of Cross-media Adaptation -- 2.World Rights: Literary Agents as Brokers in the Contemporary Mediasphere -- 3.Making Words Go Further: Book Fairs, Screen Festivals and Writers' Weeks as Engine Rooms of Adaptation -- 4.The Novel Beyond the Book: Literary Prize-Winners on Screen -- 5.Best Adapted Screenwriter?: The Intermedial Figure of the Screenwriter in the Contemporary Adaptation Industry -- 6.Cultivating the Reader: Producer and Distributor Strategies for Converting Readers into Audiences

In this practical, hands-on guide, veteran TV and screenwriter Ben Brady unlocks the secrets of the adaptation process, showing aspiring writers and writing teachers how to turn any kind of narrative material into workable, salable screenplays for film and television; Step by step, Brady guides novice screenwriters to the completion of a professional screenplay. He begins with an incisive discussion of how to evaluate a written work's potential as a screenplay. Then he discusses each step of the writing process, showing how to identify the plot and premise of the play, develop character, treatment, and dialogue, and handle camera language and format. Brady illustrates each of these points by developing and writing a complete screenplay of the novel Claire Serrat within the text. With these tools, beginning screenwriters can draw on the rich resources of words in print to create exciting screenplays for film and television. Written in vivid, entertaining prose, the book will be equally useful in the classroom or at the kitchen table, wherever enterprising writers ply their craftNotes: Includes indexISBN: 0292708076 (pbk. : alk. paper); 0292708041 (alk. paper)LON: 10139011

It is international in scope, with case studies and analyses from the US, the UK, Australia, Japan, Ireland and Denmark. The book presents a distinctive collection of chapters from creative academics and critical practitioners that serve one purpose: to put aspects of screenwriting practice into their relevant contexts. In addition, specific techniques and exercises are supplied to help screenwriters determine the difference between "good" and "evil", to write realistic and compelling characters based on this determination, and to present "messages" and write dialogue without preaching. The Soul of Screenwriting : on writing, dramatic truth, and knowing yourself / Keith Cunningham New York: Continuum, c2008.
Call No: 224 CUNAuthor: Cunningham, Keith Source: USPlace: New YorkPublisher: ContinuumPubDate: c2008PhysDes: 478 p. : ill. ; 24 cmSubject: SCRIPTS ; SCRIPTWRITERS ; SCRIPTWRITING Summary: "In The Soul of Screenwriting, Keith Cunningham distils the wisdom of more than twenty years of his screenwriting and story development seminars. Starting from within the writer's creative experience, he asks two crucial and often overlooked questions: how do we get to the core of our story? And how do we balance our concern for the finished product with our own creative processes? Uniquely inspired by the work of mythologist Joeseph Campbell and psychologist Jean Houston, The Soul of Screenwriting demonstrates that good storytelling requires much more than hitting the big "plot points" with exciting action. Cunningham argues that it is only stories that have a voice that truly speak to the audience - and to gain that voice, the writer needs commitment, enthusiasm, and an urge to get to the core of the dramatic conflict without resorting to escapism. Much more than just another "screenwriting by numbers" book, The Soul of Screenwriting is a big, bold, and holistic approach to the subject that will resonate with anyone who has ever sat down in front of a blank page, burning with the ambition to write a great screenplay. He has taken into consideration the needs of television and the text now contains interviews with well-known TV producers and key TV personnel. It deals with every aspect of documentary and factual film production. Intended for the working professional, the trainee, and the student, amateurs too will find the breadth and scope of the subject stimulating. Nowadays when the film serves not merely as a tool of entertainment, but increasingly as a tool with a variety of eminently practical jobs to do, more people than ever before become involved with film production.
Public relations officers, sales managers, television executives, those in charge of works film units, organisations using films for fund raising for charities, and members of expeditions will find here vital information. The means and methods of producing factual films are dealt with step-by-step from the initial idea to the making of release prints and their distribution. The typical problems of the "documentary" - shooting on distant and remote locations, as well as the difficulties of providing effective lighting outside the studio - are presented in practical terms. Sound recording, both under studio conditions and on location, is covered in detail. The techniques involved in laying and mixing multiple recordings to produce the final master track are described. Especially valuable are those practical suggestions that the author is able to offer from his own long personal experience. These range from budgeting and obtaining insurance cover to dealing with foreign customs." -- BOOK JACKETNotes: First ed. published 1963; Includes indexISBN: 0240509158; 0240509293 (pbk.)LON: 8735625 8735625URL status: URL: 'http://-'
