But is truth or reality readily available, easily acquired, or undisputed? Or do documentaries convey illusions of reality? What aesthetic means are used to build these illusions?
Crafting truth illuminates the way these films tell their stories; how they use the camera, editing, sound, and performance; what rhetorical devices they employ; and what the theoretical, practical, and ethical implications of those choices are. Complex documentary concepts are presented through easily accessible language, images, and a discussion of a wide range of films and videos to encourage new ways of thinking about and seeing nonfiction cinema. Stuart Cunningham probes the work of Chauvel to examine his strange, ambitious and fascinating films and the industrial and cultural environment from which they emerged - giving an appreciation of the films which has never before been available. This book also offers new approaches to understanding Australian cinema, and show how Australian culture and society changed during the period of Chauvel's work. Running through these changes, however, are continuities based on Australia's status as an 'import culture' and the consequent frailties of its cultural identity." Film-induced tourism Clevedon: Channel View Publications, 2005.

AUSTRALIA ; LOCATION SHOOTING. USA ; LOCATION SHOOTING. UK ; ADVERTISING FOR FILMS ; NEW ZEALAND ; STUDIOS, FILM. AUSTRALIA Summary: Tourism to places where movies and television series have been filmed is not a new phenomenon, having its roots in literary tourism. Whilst there is a growing recognition of the significance of film as a motivator for tourism, studies in this field are limited. However, film is more than a simple place promotion tool. Representing over five years of study into film-induced tourism, this publication considers aspects of tourism to film studios as well as film sites. Genres and styles of film considered include popular fictional movies, cult movies, television series and animation, and covers destinations form New York to Scotland, England and rural Australia. The potential of film-induced tourism as a motivator is explored, along with more negative effects, particularly in relation to small communities. The study of this complex field draws on elements of sociology and psychology, destination marketing, community development and strategic planning. [Taken from back cover.]ISBN: 1845410149

AUSTRALIA ; WAR ON TV ; BURROWES, GEOFF ; DIXON, JOHN ; MILLER, GEORGE ; ANZACS [TV] (AT, Pino Amenta, John Dixon & George Miller, 1985) Summary: "They were the tallest soldiers of any army; the only all-volunteer fighting force and the best paid of all the troops in the Great War. Yet in 1914 when they marched away, they were considered a rag-tag lot, probably too ill-disciplined to be useful in war. The proud but tragic fiasco of Gallipoli changed that perception [...] Now the Great War is the backdrop of ANZACS, one of the most dramatic and important series ever made for Australian television. In five parts the ANZACS brings to life forgotten aspects of an immense conflict, and the men - and women too - who were swept up or overtaken by it. Here, vividly illustrated in text and in pictures, is an account of how that series was made; the powerful and moving stories told; the stars who portray the dignity, bravery and poignancy of yesterday's heroes."--BOOK BLURBNotes: "The major 9 network television series (produced by Geoff Burrowes and John Dixon)'--CoverISBN: 000636893XDonation: donated by the family of Wayne Levy, 2006

AUSTRALIA : NEW SOUTH WALES ; FOX STUDIOS (SYDNEY) ; NEW SOUTH WALES FILM AND TELEVISION OFFICE ; SUPERMAN RETURNS (AT/US, Bryan Singer, 2006) ; FOOTY LEGENDS (AT, Khoa Do, 2006) Summary: This article addresses the presence of the large mainly Hollywood productions in the city of Sydney and the perception that there is a marked difference between a film industry in Sydney and a Sydney film industry. Rather than viewing the two figurations of film-making in Sydney as two distinct entities, an approach inspired by Actor-Network Theory (ANT) is deployed, using interview and ethnographic data to argue that is the networks and collaborative connections within the industry in Sydney, and between Sydney and other cities, are considered, Sydney's position within the global film industry becomes clearer.--Abstract

The new Neapolitan cinema / Alex Marlow-Mann Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, c2011.
Call No: 71(457.2) MARAuthor: Marlow-Mann, Alex Place: EdinburghPublisher: Edinburgh University PressPubDate: c2011PhysDes: xiii, 242 p. : ill., maps ; 24 cmSeries: Traditions in World CinemaSubject: LOCATION SHOOTING. ITALY ; ITALY IN FILMS Summary: `This superbly researched volume provides a wealth of information on the recent renaissance of filmmaking in Naples, considered in its broader cultural context. Not only does the author build a persuasive analysis of this body of films, but he also offers crucial insights into the conditions of their production.' --
Aine O'Healy, Loyola Marymount University --
Vito and the Others (1991), Death of a Neapolitan Mathematician (1992) and Libera (1993), the debuts of three young Neapolitan filmmakers, stood out dramatically from the landscape of Italian cinema in the early 1990s. On the back of their critical success, over the next decade and a half, Naples became a thriving centre for film production. --
In this first study in English, Alex Marlow-Mann provides a detailed, multi-faceted and provocative study of this distinct regional tradition. In tracing the movement's relationship with the popular musical melodramas previously produced in Naples, he reveals how contemporary filmmakers have interrogated, subverted and reconfigured cinematic convention as part of a comprehensive re-examination of Neapolitan identity. --Book Jacket.ISBN: 9780748640669Donation: donated by Senses of Cinema, 2013Contents: Neapolitan cinema and the Italian film industry -- Characteristics and functions of the Neapolitan formula -- Estranei all massa: the new Neapolitan cinema and the crisis of Napoletanita -- Gold and dust: hybridity, postmodernism and the legacy of Neapolitan narrative -- Symbolic politics: the Neapolitan renaissance and the politics of the new Neapolitan cinema

Rumblings from Australia's deep south : Tasmanian gothic on-screen in Studies in Australasian cinema (2011) vol.5 iss.1 p.71-80
Author: Bullock, Emily PhysDes: ArticleSubject: FANTASTIC FILMS. AUSTRALIA ; LOCATION SHOOTING. AUSTRALIA: TASMANIA ; CANNIBALISM IN FILMS ; LANDSCAPES IN FILMS. AUSTRALIA Summary: This article examines the current cinematic attention to Tasmania and its stories, with particular attention paid to the Gothic mode. ‘Tasmanian Gothic’ has become a by-word for the unsettling combination of Tasmania's colonial histories and its harsh landscapes in literature, but its cinematic counterpart has virtually been ignored. It is suggested that Tasmania is experiencing a renaissance on the big screen and it is the Gothic that appears to be the most dominant mode through which it is pictured. The article then charts a history of local Tasmanian Gothic cinematic production, a hybrid vision that tends towards a combination of stylistic, thematic, historical and geographic elements. Tasmanian Gothic cinema refers not simply to productions by Tasmanian film-makers, but to the broader on-screen representation of the island, its culture and histories by a range of local, interstate and international crews. As this article suggests, Gothic cinematic representations of Tasmania are yoked by a number of persistent concerns that act in dialogue with the unique cultural and geographic positioning of Australia's only island state. --Abstract

The technique of documentary film production / by W. Hugh Baddeley ; with a preface by Paul Rotha London: Focal Press, 1975.
Call No: 761 BADAuthor: Baddeley, Hugh W. Edition: 4th rev. edPlace: LondonPublisher: Focal PressPubDate: 1975PhysDes: 282 p. : ill. ; 23 cmSeries: The library of communication techniquesSubject: BUDGETING ; CAMERAS ; CINEMATOGRAPHY ; DISTRIBUTION ; DOCUMENTARIES ; DOCUMENTARY FILMS ; EDITING ; FILMMAKING ; INSURANCE, FILM ; LIGHTING ; LOCATION FINDING ; LOCATION SHOOTING ; MUSIC AND THE CINEMA ; PRE-PRODUCTION ; POST-PRODUCTION ; PRODUCTION ; PRODUCTION COSTS ; SCRIPTWRITING ; SOUNDTRACKS ; SOUND EDITING ; SOUND RECORDING Summary: "Hugh Baddeley has carried out further revisions of this book since the last edition which he enlarged by nearly forty pages. He has taken into consideration the needs of television and the text now contains interviews with well-known TV producers and key TV personnel. It deals with every aspect of documentary and factual film production. Intended for the working professional, the trainee, and the student, amateurs too will find the breadth and scope of the subject stimulating. Nowadays when the film serves not merely as a tool of entertainment, but increasingly as a tool with a variety of eminently practical jobs to do, more people than ever before become involved with film production.
Public relations officers, sales managers, television executives, those in charge of works film units, organisations using films for fund raising for charities, and members of expeditions will find here vital information. The means and methods of producing factual films are dealt with step-by-step from the initial idea to the making of release prints and their distribution. The typical problems of the "documentary" - shooting on distant and remote locations, as well as the difficulties of providing effective lighting outside the studio - are presented in practical terms. Sound recording, both under studio conditions and on location, is covered in detail. The techniques involved in laying and mixing multiple recordings to produce the final master track are described. Especially valuable are those practical suggestions that the author is able to offer from his own long personal experience. These range from budgeting and obtaining insurance cover to dealing with foreign customs." -- BOOK JACKETNotes: First ed. published 1963; Includes indexISBN: 0240509158; 0240509293 (pbk.)LON: 8735625 8735625URL status: URL: 'http://-'

World film locations : Singapore / Edited by Lorenzo Codelli Bristol, U.K. ; Chicago, USA: Intellect Books, 2014.

Though Singapore was home to a flourishing Chinese and Malay film industry in the 1950s and 1960s, between independence in 1965 and the early 1990s, few movies were made in Singapore. A new era for cinema in the sovereign city-state started with the international recognition of Eric Khoo's first features, followed by a New Wave comprised of graduates from local film schools. In recent years the Singapore film industry has produced commercial successful fare, such as the horror movie The Maid, as well as more artistic films like Sandcastle, the first Singaporean film to be selected for International Critic's Week at Cannes, and Ilo Ilo, which won the Camera d'or at Cannes in 2013. Covering the myths that surround Singaporean film and exploring the realities of the movies that come from this exciting city, World Film Locations: Singapore introduces armchair travelers to a rich, but less known, international cinema." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographic references and index; Includes recommended further reading; Includes filmographyISBN: 9781783203611Donation: donated by Senses of Cinema, 2014Contents: Maps/Scenes -- Scenes 1-7 -- 1910-1958 -- Scenes 8-14 -- 1961-1966 -- Scenes 15-21 -- 1967-1990 -- Scenes 22-28 -- 1995-2002 -- Scenes 29-35 -- 2004-2009 -- Scenes 36-42 -- 2009-2013 -- Essays -- Singapore: City of the Imagination / Toh Hun Ping -- Malay Screen in a Predominantly Chinese Singapore / Yvonne Ng Uhde -- The Outsider's Singapore: A Brief History of 'Western' Film-makers' Expeditions in Singapore / Ben Slater -- A History of Saying No: Singapore International Film Festival and Censorship / Daniel Hui -- Eric Khoo / Silvia Wong -- The Cultural Materialism of Singapore in Jack Neo's Cinema / Stephen Teo -- A View of Public Housing in Singapore Cinema / Warren Sin

World film locations : Athens / edited by Anna Poupou, Afroditi Nikolaidou and Eirini Sifaki Bristol, U.K. ; Chicago, USA: Intellect Books, 2014.

World Film Locations: Athens takes readers to film locations in the central historical district with excursions to the periphery of Athens--popular neighbourhoods, poor suburbs, and slums often represented in postwar neorealist films--and then on to garden cities and upper class suburbs, especially those preferred by the auteurs of the 1970s. Of course, no Grecian vacation would be complete without a visit to the sea, and summer resorts, hotels, and beaches near Athens are frequent backdrops for international productions. However, more recent economic strife has emptied city neigbourhoods, created urban violence, and caused an increase in riots in the Mediterranean city, and representations of this on film are juxtaposed with images of the eternal and idyllic city. Featuring both Greek and foreign productions from various genres and historical periods, World Film Locations: Athens ultimately works to establish connections between the various aethetics of dominant representations of Athens." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographic references and index; Includes filmography; Includes recommended further readingISBN: 9781783203598Donation: donated by Senses of Cinema, 2014Contents: Maps/Scenes -- Scenes 1-8: 1924-1956 -- Scenes 9-16: 1956-1966 -- Scenes 17-24: 1968-1984 -- Scenes 25-32: 1982-2003 -- Scenes 33-39: 2005-2010 -- Scenes 40-46: 2011-2014 -- Essays -- Athens: City of the Imagination / Anna Poupou and Eirini Sifaki -- Open-air Cinemas in Post-war Athens / Dimitris Eleftheriotis -- Athens in Burning / Dimitris Papanikolaou -- Nikos Panayotopoulous's Athens: From Relic of Antiquity to Hipster Urban Refuge / Athena Kartalou -- Controversies of Space in Popular Greek Cinema (1950-70)" From the Courtyard to the Living Room / Angeliki Milonaki -- Dirtopia and Its Urban Subcultures: Cinematic Athens in the Post-dictatorship Era / Afroditi Nikolaidou and Anna Poupou -- Athens in the 1960s Greek Musical / Lydia Papadimitriou
