Autism in Film and Television brings together more than a dozen essays on depictions of autism, exploring how autistic characters are signified in media and how the reception of these characters informs societal understandings of autism.
Editors Murray Pomerance and R. Barton Palmer have assembled a pioneering examination of autism’s portrayal in film and television. Contributors consider the various means by which autism has been expressed in films such as Phantom Thread, Mercury Rising, and Life Animated and in television and streaming programs including Atypical, Stranger Things, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Community. Across media, the figure of the brilliant, accomplished, and “quirky” autist has proven especially appealing. Film and television have thus staked out a progressive position on neurodiversity by insisting on screen time for autism but have done so while frequently ignoring the true diversity of autistic experience. As a result, this volume is a welcome celebration of nonjudgmental approaches to disability, albeit one that is still freighted with stereotypes and elisions. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781477324912Contents: -- -- Preface: Two Meditations: Who Am I? Cycles, sequels, spin-offs, remakes, and reboots : multiplicities in film and television / edited by Amanda Ann Klein and R. Barton Palmer Austin, TX: University of Texas Press, 2016.

Edition: First editionSource: USPlace: Austin, TXPublisher: University of Texas PressPubDate: 2016PhysDes: vi, 357 pages : illustrations (black and white) ; 24 cmSubject: FILM ; CRITICISM ; REMAKES ; SEQUELS Summary: "With sequels, prequels, remakes, spin-offs, or copies of successful films or franchises dominating film and television production, it sometimes seems as if Hollywood is incapable of making an original film or TV show. These textual pluralities or multiplicities—while loved by fans who flock to them in droves—tend to be dismissed by critics and scholars as markers of the death of high culture. Cycles, Sequels, Spin-offs, Remakes, and Reboots takes the opposite view, surveying a wide range of international media multiplicities for the first time to elucidate their importance for audiences, industrial practices, and popular culture.
The essays in this volume offer a broad picture of the ways in which cinema and television have used multiplicities to streamline the production process, and to capitalize on and exploit viewer interest in previously successful and/or sensational story properties. An impressive lineup of established and emerging scholars talk seriously about forms of multiplicity that are rarely discussed as such, including direct-to-DVD films made in Nigeria, cross-cultural Japanese horror remakes, YouTube fan-generated trailer mash-ups, and 1970s animal revenge films. They show how considering the particular bonds that tie texts to one another allows us to understand more about the audiences for these texts and why they crave a version of the same story (or character or subject) over and over again. These findings demonstrate that, far from being lowbrow art, multiplicities are actually doing important cultural work that is very worthy of serious study." -- BOOK BACK COVER BLURBNotes: Formerly CIP; Includes bibliographical references and index; Also published electronicallyISBN: 9781477308172Donation: Senses of cinemaContents: -- ch. 1 Introduction / Amanda Ann Klein and R. Then consider some lesser known, yet equally compelling cinematic achievements- The Fixer, The Gypsy Moths, Path to War. These triumphs are the work of the best known and most highly regarded Hollywood driector to emerge from live TV drama in the 1950s- five-time Emmy award-winner John Frankenheimer. Although Frankenheimer was a pioneer in the genre of political thrillers, who embraced the antimodernist critique of contemporary society, some of his later films did not receive the attention they deserved. Many critics claimed that at a midpoint in his career he lost his touch. World-renowned film scholars put this myth to rest in A Little Solitaire, which offers the only multidisciplinary critical account of Frankenheimer's oeuvre. They emphasize his deep and passionate engagement- not only with national politics and people's irrepressible need to assert their rights against those who would reduce them to silence and anonymity, but also with a mise-en-scene filmd from just the right angles.
