UK; WAR IN FILMS Summary: "This book presents a unique insight into an extraordinary period of European history that had far-reaching significance for British cinema and for the way history itself is represented. The work collected in this volume draws from the best knowledge, enthusiasm and critical insight of leading scholars, archivists and historians specialising in British cinema. The editors are experts in the field of British silent cinema; in particular, its complex relationship to the Great War and its afterimage in popular culture. As the Great War continues to fade from living memory, it is a significant task to look back at how the cinema industry responded to that conflict as it unfolded, and how it shaped the war's memory through the 1910s and 1920s. (1945), A Matter of Life and Death (1947) and The Red Shoes (1948), are landmarks in British cinema, standing apart from the realist and comic mainstream with their highly stylised aesthetic and their themes of romantic longing and spiritual crisis. Powell and Pressburger are revered by film lovers and film-makers (Martin Scorsese has called them ‘the most successful experimental film-makers in the world’). In this first ever collection of essays on Powell, an international group of scholars explore his film-making landscape, providing new readings of individual films, analysing recurrent techniques and themes, and relating these to contemporary debates about gender, sexuality, nationality and cinematic spectacle. Powell, with and without Pressburger, emerges as a film-maker of lasting originality and significance. [Taken from back of book.] ISBN: 1844570940 More info

Feminism without women : culture and criticism in a "postfeminist" age / Tania Modleski
New York: Routledge, 1991.
Call No: 626:396 MOD Author: Modleski, Tania, 1949 Place: New York Publisher: Routledge PubDate: 1991 PhysDes: xi, 188 p. ; 24 cm Subject: FEMINISM AND THE CINEMA; GENDER AND THE CINEMA; THEORY; WOMEN IN FILMS; MEN IN FILMS; WAR FILMS; ETHNIC GROUPS IN FILMS; BODY IN FILMS Summary: Feminism Without Women examines the operation of "postfeminism" in popular culture, especially popular film, and in cultural studies. By scrutinizing a variety of feminist and poststructuralist theoretical positions and freqently juxtaposing her discussions with analyses of contemporary movies (ranging from Pee-wee's Big Adventure to Lethal Weapon and Three Men and a Baby ), Modleski offers a broad perspective on the future of feminism. In particular, she shows how women as social subjects are once again being relegated to the margins of discourse and society, only now, ironically, they are in danger of being marginalized by feminism itself . Feminism Without Women is a multifaceted response to the shift within feminist theory from "gynocritics" (a woman-centred critical practice) to an increasingly male-oriented "gender studies". This move has been accompanied by feminist/philosophical attempts to abolish the very category of "woman". A large portion of the book is devoted to analyzing the state of "male feminism" and argues that the "new masculinities" being heralded by some feminists are less revolutionary than is often claimed; that these kinder , gentler masculinit are in many ways perfectly consonant with the conservative times. Modleski situates her discussions of criticism and theory in the context of popular culture, and social issues relevant to feminism: surrogate mothering, women and war, the debates over pornography, gay representation in the era of AIDS, the controversy within feminism over lesbian S&M, and the intensification of racism in the 1980s and 1990s. -- PUBLISHER Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 165-182) and index ISBN: 0415904161 : $39.95; 041590417X (pbk) : $13.95 LON: bnb41590416; 7924353 Contents: Part I: Theory and methodology -- 1. In The Hollywood War Film, Daniel Binns considers how war has been depicted throughout the history of cinema. Looking at depictions of both World Wars, the Vietnam War, and the major conflicts in the Middle East, Binns reflects on representations of war and conflict, revealing how Hollywood has made the war film more than just a genre, but a dynamic cultural phenomenon.
Looking closely at films such as All Quiet on the Western Front, Full Metal Jacket, and The Hurt Locker, Binns reveals the commonalities in Hollywood films despite the distinct conflicts and eras they represent, and he shows how contemporary war films closely echo earlier films in their nationalistic and idealistic depictions. Offering a trenchant analysis of some of the most important war films from the past century, this book will be of interest to anyone who has been captivated by how film has dealt with one of humanity’s most difficult, but far too common, realities. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9781783207541 Contents: Acknowledgements and dedication -- Introduction: war and cinema -- For glory: World Wars I and II -- Fear and frustration: Korea and Vietnam -- Live from the front line: conflict in the Middle East -- Extended discourse: cross-platform war -- Conclusion: cycles of violence, repeat performances -- Bibliography -- Index. The main emphasis of the book is on the British and American cinema and hundreds of documentary, action, and 'actuality' films from Nanook of the North to Woodstock and Gimme Shelter are described, discussed and analysed, including films by the great pioneers such as Robert Flaherty, Basil Wright, John Grierson and Paul Rotha and the new experimental film makers like Richard Leacock, D. A. Pennebaker, Frederick Wiseman and Albert and David Maysles. Richard Barsam provides a critical framework against which the non-fiction film can be studied and enjoyed. Among the many topics covered are early American, Russian and Continental films, the British and American films of the twenties and thirties, the films of World War II and the whole range of styles and subjects of the fifties, sixties and today." -- BOOK BLURB Notes: Originally published: New York : Dutton, 1973; Bibl.: p.317-321. - List of films: p.299-316. - Index ISBN: 0047910313 (Pbk) : ª1.95; 0047910305 LON: 1923477 Contents: 1. But it is surprising that although the film is seen through the eyes of one particular soldier, a viewpoint portrayed using highly experimental forms of animation, this has not prevented Waltz with Bashir from being regarded as both an 'autobiographical' and 'honest' account of the director's own experiences in the 1982 Lebanon war. In fact, the film won several documentary awards, and even those critics focusing on the representation of trauma suggest that this trauma must be authentic. In this sense, it is the documentary form rather than the animation that has had the most influence upon critics."--Publisher's description ISBN: 9781911325154 Donation: donated by Senses of Cinema Contents: Machine generated contents note: ch.
