It reworks Pasolini's landmark concept of 'the cinema of poetry' to look at the transformation of film form in its encounter with society, the sacred, the subjective and the presence of the camera. In the 1970s, the influential forms of a cinema of poetry are analysed in key features by Altman, Herzog, Malick, Scorsese, Weir, Von Trotta and Tarkovsky while in the 1980s and 1990s the emergence of new filmmakers has meant a diffusion of different cinemas of poetry using new techniques and new poetries. Of key importance here is the work of Kieslowski, Lynch, Egoyan, Campion, Greenaway, Zhang Yimou, Tran Anh Hung and Wong Kar-Wai, as well as the reinvention of science fiction and film noir in American genre."

Can a director, as the conductor of an orchestra of writers, actors, cameramen and technicians, stamp his personal vision on the films he makes? This and related questions are raised by this collection of statements made by famous directors about their art. Harry Geguld’s anthology of “patristic writings” runs from the days (in 1895) when Louis Lumiere filmed a train entering a station, by way of Charlie Chaplin’s knockabout ad-libbing, to the sophisticated ruminations of Antonioni and Bergman and the ideas behind the nouvelle vague. Here is D.W. Griffith’s scouting the very idea of talking pictures; Mack Sennett on custard pies; Eisenstein on three-dimensional film; Cocteau on the raw materials of illusion; Kurosawa on filming in Japan; Hitchcock on the macabre; and some other twenty leading directors on aspects of their work. In his introduction, Harry Geguld assesses the unique characteristics of motion pictures and comments refreshingly on the eternal controversy of “book into film”. [Taken from back cover.]ID2: 291

The man from the third row : Hasse Ekman, Swedish cinema and the long shadow of Ingmar Bergman / Fredrik Gustafsson Oxford: Berghahn Books, 2017.
Call No: 81 EKM GUSAuthor: Gustafsson, Fredrik Place: New York; OxfordPublisher: Berghahn BooksPubDate: 2017PhysDes: 168 p. ; Illus. ; 23 cmSubject: Ekman, Hasse ; BERGMAN, INGMAR ; SWEDEN Notes: Until his early retirement at age 50, Hasse Ekman was one of the leading lights of Swedish cinema, an actor, writer, and director of prodigious talents. Yet today his work is virtually unknown outside of Sweden, eclipsed by the filmography of his occasional collaborator (and frequent rival) Ingmar Bergman. This comprehensive introduction—the first ever in English—follows Ekman’s career from his early days as a film journalist, through landmark films such as Girl with Hyacinths (1950), to his retirement amid exhaustion and disillusionment. Combining historical context with insightful analyses of Ekman’s styles and themes, this long overdue study considerably enriches our understanding of Swedish film history. - publisher's web siteISBN: 9781785332869Contents: List of Illustrations

The bulk of the text focuses on the work of directors Wes Anderson, Ingmar Bergman, the Coen brothers, Peter Greenaway, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Andrey Tarkovsky and Gus Van Sant. Significantly, the anthology includes a discussion of films administratively controlled by such famously sound-conscious producers as David O. Selznick and Val Lewton. Written by the leading film music scholars from Europe, North America, and Australia, Music, Sound and Filmmakers: Sonic Style in Cinema will complement other volumes in Film Music Coursework, or stand on its own among a body of research.
