The bulk of the text focuses on the work of directors Wes Anderson, Ingmar Bergman, the Coen brothers, Peter Greenaway, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Andrey Tarkovsky and Gus Van Sant. Significantly, the anthology includes a discussion of films administratively controlled by such famously sound-conscious producers as David O. Selznick and Val Lewton. Written by the leading film music scholars from Europe, North America, and Australia, Music, Sound and Filmmakers: Sonic Style in Cinema will complement other volumes in Film Music Coursework, or stand on its own among a body of research. On Kubrick / Naremore, James London: British Film Institute, 2007.
Call No: 81 KUB NARAuthor: Naremore, James Place: LondonPublisher: British Film InstitutePubDate: 2007PhysDes: 299 p. : ill. ; 24cmSubject: KUBRICK, STANLEY ; A.I: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (US, Steven Spielberg, 2001) ; FEAR AND DESIRE (US, Stanley Kubrick, 1953) Summary: On Kubrick is a critical study of Stanley Kubrick's career, beginning with his earliest feature, "Fear and Desire" (1953), and ending with his posthumous production of "A.I., Artificial Intelligence" (2001). Organized in six parts ("The Taste Machine," "Young Kubrick," "Kubrick, Harris, Douglas," "Stanley Kubrick Presents," "Late Kubrick," and "Epilogue"), it offers provocative analysis of each of Kubrick's films together with new information about their production histories and cultural contexts. Its ultimate aim is to provide a concise yet thorough discussion that will be useful as both an academic text and a trade publication. The book argues that in several respects Kubrick was one of the cinema's last modernists: his taste and sensibility were shaped by the artistic culture of New York in the 1950s; he became a celebrated auteur who forged a distinctive style; he used art-cinema conventions in commercial productions; he challenged censorship regulations; and throughout his career he was preoccupied with one of the central themes of modernist art - the conflict between rationality and its ever-present shadow, the unconscious. War and science are often the subjects of his films, and his work has a hyper-masculine quality; yet no director has more relentlessly emphasized the absurdity of combat, the failure of scientific reasoning, and the fascistic impulses in masculine sexuality. The book also argues that while Kubrick was a voracious intellectual and a life-long autodidact, the fascination of his work has less to do with the ideas it espouses than with the emotions it evokes. Often described as "cool" or "cold," Kubrick is best understood as a skillful practitioner of what might be called the aesthetics of the grotesque; he employs extreme forms of caricature and black comedy to create disgusting, frightening, yet also laughable images of the human body. No less than Diane Arbus (who was his contemporary), he makes his viewers uneasy, unsure how to react either emotionally or politically. -- publisher's blurbISBN: 9781844571420Contents: -- preface and acknowledgments -- part one: prologue -- 1: the last modernist -- 2: silence, exile and cunning -- 3: grotesque aesthetics -- part two: early Kubrick -- 1: no other country but the mind -- 2: dream city -- part three: Kubrick, Harris, Douglas -- 1: the criminal and the artist -- 2: ant hill -- 3: Dolores, lady of pain -- part four: Stanley Kubrick Presents -- 1: wargasm -- 2: beyond the stars -- 3: a professional piece of Sinny -- 4: duelist -- 5: horrorshow -- Part five: late Kubrick -- 1: warriors -- 2: lovers -- part six: epilogue -- 1: afterthoughts -- 2: love and death in A.I. Exhibiting Stanley’s equipment, his plans, notes, photos? It did not feel right and would have been unthinkable during his lifetime, yet on careful reflection and discussion with Christiane Kubrick it became quite clear that while his privacy had to be guarded, his professional output was for all to be seen to celebrate the life of a great filmmaker. The efforts, the hard work, the inventiveness and wealth of ideas are so interesting, whereas the mystery of artistic talent will always remain under seal. Stanley Kubrick’s films will remain a valid reflection of his time and culture for future generations.” [“Foreword”, Jan Harlan].ISBN: 3887990692
