Dolce vita confidential : Fellini, Loren, Pucci, paparazzi, and the swinging high life of 1950s Rome / Shawn Levy London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2018.

It’s the heyday of fashion icons such as Pucci and Brioni, and the height of ‘Hollywood on the Tiber’, when a dizzying array of stars flock to Cinecittà, the huge movie studio on the outskirts of Rome. At the bars on Via Veneto the likes of Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor mix with blue bloods and bohemians, while behind them trail street photographers in pursuit of the most unflattering and dramatic portraits of fame. In a fast-paced, kaleidoscopic narrative, Shawn Levy shows how all roads lead to Federico Fellini’s world-conquering movie La Dolce Vita, starring Marcello Mastroianni and the Swedish bombshell Anita Ekberg. He recreates Rome’s stunning ascent with vivid and compelling tales of its glitterati and artists, down to every last outrageous detail of the city’s magnificent transformation." - taken from publisher's websiteNotes: Includes bibliographical references and index.ISBN: 9781474606158Contents: 1. Film, form, and phantasy : Adrian Stokes and film aesthetics / Michael O'Pray Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire ; New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2004.
Call No: 626 [159.964.2] OPRAuthor: O'Pray, Michael Source: USPlace: Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire ; New YorkPublisher: Palgrave MacmillanPubDate: 2004PhysDes: xiv, 252 p. ; 23 cmSeries: Language, Discourse, SocietySubject: AESTHETICS ; EXPRESSIONISM ; B-MOVIES ; PSYCHOANALYSIS AND THE CINEMA ; MONTAGE ; FORD, JOHN ; HITCHCOCK, ALFRED ; ROSSELLINI, ROBERTO ; ANTONIONI, MICHELANGELO ; DREYER, CARL TH. Summary: The critical writings of Adrian Stokes, based on the psychoanalyst Melanie Klein's innovative theories, were enormously influential on visual art and culture during his lifetime, but have rarely been applied to film. In this first major study of Stokes, his ideas and those of the philosopher Richard Wolheim are considered in relation to two central issues in current film theory - film as representation and as expression. Stokes fundamental distinction between carving and modelling which reflects Klein's own division in mental life between paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions is explored in relation to the traditional division in film theory between montage and realism. At the core of this study is the role of the Kleinian notion of phantasy in understanding film as an art form. To this end, the carving and modelling modes are applied to the films of Ford, Hitchcock, Rossellini, Antonioni, Dreyer, Eisenstein and American B movies. Utopian television : Rossellini, Watkins, and Godard beyond cinema / Michael Cramer Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota Press, 2017.
Call No: 21(4) CRAAuthor: Cramer, Michael Place: Minneapolis, MNPublisher: University of Minnesota PressPubDate: 2017PhysDes: xxiii,276 p. : illustrations ; 22 cmSubject: TELEVISION, FILMS MADE FOR ; TELEVISION AND THE CINEMA. EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ; ROSSELLINI, ROBERTO ; WATKINS, PETER ; GODARD, JEAN-LUC ; WAR GAME, THE (UK, Peter Watkins, 1966) ; HISTOIRE(S) DU CINEMA (SZ/FR, Jean-Luc Godard, 1997) Summary: Television has long been a symbol of social and cultural decay, yet many in postwar Europe saw it as the medium with the greatest potential to help build a new society and create a new form of audiovisual art. Utopian Television examines works of the great filmmakers Roberto Rossellini, Peter Watkins, and Jean-Luc Godard, all of whom looked to television as a promising new medium even while remaining critical of its existing practices.
Utopian Television illustrates how each director imagined television’s improved or “utopian” version by drawing on elements that had come to characterize it by the early 1960s. Taking advantage of the public service model of Western European broadcasting, each used television to realize works that would never have been viable in the commercial cinema. All three directors likewise seized on television’s supposed affinity for information and its status as a “useful” medium, but attempted to join this utility with aesthetic experimentation, suggesting new ways to conceive of the relationship between aesthetics and information.
As beautifully written as it is theoretically rigorous, Utopian Television turns to the writing of Fredric Jameson and Ernst Bloch in treating the three directors’ television experiments as enactments of “utopia as method.” In doing so it reveals the extent to which the medium inspired and shaped hopes not only of a better future but of better moving image art as well. - publisher's web siteISBN: 9781517900397Contents: Contents -- Introduction.
