"Categorized by genre, and featuring movies by master directors such as Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, Robert Altman, Frank Capra, and John Ford, as well as relative newcomers such as Chris Eyre and Christopher Nolan, Adaptations offers insight into the process of turning a short story into a screenplay, one that, when successful, doesn't take drastic liberties with the text upon which it is based, but doesn't mirror its source material too closely either."--BOOK JACKET.Notes: Also issued onlineISBN: 1400053145Contents: -- Jerry and Molly and Sam / Raymond Carver -- Blow-up / Julio Corta´zar -- Your Arkansas traveler / Budd Schulberg -- Rear window / Cornell Woolrich -- The sentinel / Arthur C. Bringing up Baby / Howard Hawks, director ; Gerald Mast, editor New Brunswick, N.J.: Rutgers University Press, 1988.
Call No: 79 BRI HAWAuthor: Hawks, Howard ; Mast, Gerald Source: USPlace: New Brunswick, N.J.Publisher: Rutgers University PressPubDate: 1988PhysDes: 320 pages : illustrations ; 21 cmSeries: Rutgers films in print ; v. 10.Subject: BRINGING UP BABY (US, Howard Hawks, 1938) Summary: "Bringing Up Baby (1938) is the essence of thirties screwball comedy. It is also quintessential Howard Hawks, treating many of the director's favorite themes, particularly the loving war between the sexes. Bringing Up Baby features Katharine Hepburn as a flaky heiress and Cary Grant as an absentminded paleontologist, roles in which they come into their own as stars and deliver particularly fine comic performances. Pauline Kael has called the film the "American movies' closest equivalent to Restoration comedy." The comparison is based on the quick repartee and witty dialogue, a hallmark of Hawks's work and well conveyed here by Gerald Mast's transcription from the screen." - taken from back coverNotes: Series numbering mistakenly omitted in publishing -- Hawks Filmography 1926-1970: pages 315-318 -- Bibliography: pages [319]-320ISBN: 0813513413Contents: [Introduction] "Everything's Gonna Be All Right" : The Making of Bringing Up Baby -- Howard Hawks: A Biographical Sketch -- [Bringing Up Baby] Credits and Cast -- The Continuity Script -- Script Variations -- "Bringing Up Baby," by Hagar Wilde -- [Interview, Reviews, and Commentaries] Interview with Joseph McBride -- [Reviews] New York Times, Frank S. Several landmark films are covered here in lively examinations of the art of successful cinematic adaptation, covering children's literature from the Victorian age to the present - from Tom Brown's Schooldays to A Hero Ain't Nothing but a Sandwich [...] This is the first book to devote itself exclusively to film adaptations of children's classics. All the writers are equally at home in children's fiction and film studies. Their essays, with one exception, were especially prepared for this volume. All together, a rewarding look at old and new favourites in literature and the movies, and at the elements that have made them lastingly successful." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Filmography: p. 253-273; Bibliography: p. 280-290ISBN: 0804428409 : $14.95; 0804468834 (pbk.) : $6.95LON: 83014816; 2808775

The cinema as art / Ralph Stephenson & J. R. Debrix Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1969.

As this book demonstrates, however, the cinema stands for an art form which is almost unique in immediacy and scope. The authors explain, with over 300 examples taken from films of every country and period, the stages by which a director isolates what is mentally and emotionally significant in a situation. The reader is shown, from the inside, how the director may achieve this end by exploiting any or all of the cinematic techniques from script-planning to final editing, from camera movement to costume from sound to soft-focus. A MA SOEUR ; BREILLAT, CATHERINE ; BRESSON, ROBERT Summary: Whether embodied in literature, theater, or film, an enduring theme of many artistic works has been the protagonist’s search for identity. Such quests are typically psychological or spiritual journeys and depicted on the screen in a variety of manifestations—endeavors embarked upon to address an emotional trauma or to overcome an obstacle in the hero’s life. Using Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et La Bête as a leitmotif, these pursuits are discussed by author Maria Garcia as encounters with the “Beast.” At the end of their quests, heroes are reborn into their new identities, while the Beast disappears, transforms, or dies.
In Cinematic Quests for Identity: The Hero’s Encounter with the Beast, Garcia examines the cinematic conventions of the male and female search for individuation across several genres. After discussing La Belle et La Bête, the author looks at a number of films including three iconic male journeys—The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Searchers, and The Deer Hunter. Additional chapters focus on The Silence of the Lambs, Bringing Up Baby, The Lady Eve, The Secret of Roan Inish, The Natural, and Moneyball. The book concludes with a consideration of the three fairy tale films by Catherine Breillat—Fat Girl, Bluebeard, and The Sleeping Beauty—and the female characters in several Robert Bresson films, including The Trial of Joan of Arc.
Providing a unique and original perspective on films throughout the world, this provocative book draws upon Jungian thought, as well as several literary traditions including fairy tales, epic poetry, and Greek and Celtic mythology. Aimed at scholars of film and film theory, Cinematic Quests for Identity will also appeal to movie fans interested in a deeper understanding of films that explore a character’s struggle to live a conscious life. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781442246973

He shows John Ford to be a very successful director, from 1917, the period of silent movies, to 1966, a time when movies had become an important means of entertainment. He shows John Ford as a cantankerous, wily and brave man, who had a big influence on American cinema, and American social history, as a person who opposed McCarthyism, and who was wounded in the Second World War making documentary and propaganda films [Taken from the cover of the book]Notes: Also published : New York : Dial Press, 1979; Includes index; Filmography: p.229- 291ISBN: 0047910380

Monster : living off the big screen / by John Gregory Dunne New York: Random House, c1997.
Call No: 81DUN DUNAuthor: Dunne, John Gregory Edition: First editionSource: USPlace: New YorkPublisher: Random HousePubDate: c1997PhysDes: 203 p. ; 22 cmSubject: HOLLYWOOD ; INDUSTRY, FILM ; INDUSTRY, FILM. USA ; SCRIPTS ; DUNNE, JOHN GREGORY ; UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL (US, Jon Avnet, 1996) Summary: "Monster is John Gregory Dunne's mordantly funny account of life on the Hollywood food chain. Dunne and his wife, Joan Didion, have been working in the movies for over twenty-five years, and have written, rewritten, brainstormed, and developed two dozen scripts, seven of which have been produced. Monster is the candid chronicle of how one of those scripts finally got made into Up Close & Personal, starring Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer.
The Up Close screenplay started out as the story of Jessica Savitch, the television news anchorwoman whose history included drugs, opportunistic sex, and an early, violent death. Over the years it was refined into a story that would "make the audience walk out feeling uplifted, good about something, and good about themselves," as one executive put it in an early script meeting. The tale of how this happened is a hilarious saga that Dunne relates with a wicked eye and perfect pitch for the absurdities and savage infighting of the film industry."

From Monsters Inc. to Toy Story and Wall-E, Pixar's animated characters take on human qualities that demand more than just cultural analysis. What animates the human subject according to Pixar? What are the ideological implications of that animation?
Pixar with Lacan has the double aim of analyzing pixar films while at once exemplifying important psychoanalytic concepts (the voice, the gaze, the partial object, the Other, the object a, the primal father, the name-of-the-father, symbolic castration, the imaginary/the real/the symbolic, desire and drive, the four discourses, masculine/feminine). In so doing , Lilian Munk Rosing expertly examines the ideological implications of the images of human existance in Pixar films.-- BOOK BACK COVERNotes: Formerly CIP; Includes bibliographical references and indexISBN: 9781501320170Contents: -- Introduction -- Beyond the Name of the Father: Toy Story -- Big O is Watching You: Toy Story 2 -- Sadism in the Kindergarten: Toy Story 3 -- entertainment as warfare : A Bug's Life -- There is Nothing More Toxic than a Human Child: Monsters, Inc -- Just Keep Swimming: Finding Nemo -- More than Super: The Incredibles -- the Mother Road: Cars -- Man is a Puppet, Soul is a Rat: Ratatouille -- Humanity Stuck in Vacation Hell: Wall-E -- His Master's Voice: Up -- epilogue: animation and capitalism -- references -- filmography -- index --

Prison movies : cinema behind bars / Kevin Kehrwald New York: Wallflower Press published by Columbia University Press,
Call No: 734.7KEHAuthor: Kehrwald, Kevin Place: Chichester, U.K.; New YorkPublisher: Wallflower Press published by Columbia University PressPhysDes: vii,21p. : illustrated ; 21 cmSeries: Short CutsSubject: PRISON FILMS ; I WANT TO LIVE! Often considered an offshoot of the gangster film, the prison film precedes the gangster film and is in many ways its opposite. Rather than focusing on tragic figures heading for a fall, the prison film focuses on fallen characters seeking redemption. The gangster's perverse pursuit of the American dream is irrelevant to the prisoner for whom that dream has already failed. At their core, prison films are about self-preservation at the hands of oppressive authority. Like history itself, prison films display long stretches of idleness punctuated by eruptions of violence, dangerous moments that signify liberation and the potential for change. The enclosed world of the prison is a highly effective microcosm, one that forces characters and audiences alike to confront vexing issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality. These portrayals of men and women behind bars have thrived because they deal with such fundamental human themes as freedom, individuality, power, justice, and mercy. -- publisher's web siteNotes: Acknowledgements -- Introduction: After the Crime is Over -- 1. It recreates for us movies we've come to love: movies the way they were when, in 1934, four in particular - IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, TWENTIETH CENTURE, THE THIN MAN, and THE GAY DIVORCEE - heralded the arrival of the golden age of Hollywood romantic ("screwball") comedy. Over the next ten years, some of Hollywood's brightest directors and stars turned out some of America's most enduring and beloved films. The screwballs - slangy, irreverent, playful, skeptical, and "powerfully, glamorously in love with love" - constitute a genre of American film unique in its combination of the innocent and the worldly, of swank and slapstick. Now critic James Harvey - writing with brilliance and humor - gives us the first truly comprehensive book about these movies and the people who made them." In this groundbreaking work, Kathleen Rowe explores how the unruly woman - often a voluptuous, noisy, joke-making rebel or "woman on top" - uses humor and excess to undermine patriarchal norms and authority. At the heart of the book are detailed analyses of two highly successful unruly women - the comedian Roseanne Arnold and the Muppet Miss Piggy. Putting these two figures in a deeper cultural perspective, Rowe also examines the evolution of romantic film comedy from the classical Hollywood period to the present, showing how the comedic roles of actresses such as Katharine Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck, and Marilyn Monroe offered an alternative, empowered image of women that differed sharply from the "suffering heroine" portrayed in classical melodramas; This feminist study of comedy in film and television offers exciting new opportunities for understanding these media. Written with verve and humor, it will be important reading for a wide popular and scholarly audience in mass communications, gender studies, and popular cultureNotes: Includes bibliographical references (p. However, many of its films are incredibly besotted with a nostalgic longing for the past. From the Toy Story trilogy to the first Cars film, many of Pixar’s films are about chasing what used to be instead of embracing the future. In this book, published on the 20th anniversary of the original Toy Story’s release, Josh Spiegel examines some of the films from Pixar and Disney over the past 20 years that have embodied one of the most important lines of dialogue in Disney history, courtesy of theme-park narration: “Here, tomorrow is today.
