'Alternative Worlds in Hollywood Cinema' is the first book to analyze these imaginary realms, tracing their construction and development across periods, genres and history.
"Through an analysis of such landmark films as 'The Wizard of Oz', 'It's a Wonderful Life' and 'Groundhog Day', Walters reveals how unconventional worlds are crucial to each film's dramatic agenda and narrative structure. This groundbreaking volume unifies decades of divergent work by film scholars and points the way towards a new theoretical framework for understanding fantasy in the context of popular film. 'Alternative Worlds in Hollywood Cinema' will be an essential resource for film studies scholars and movie buffs alike." Schoedsack, 1933) Summary: "Man has come a long way from his earliest predecessor, the Ape, yet his dreams are still haunted by nightmares of giant gorillas plundering, smashing and destroying. Through two hundred stills, full colour poster reproductions, line drawings, and an intensely researched text, this fascinating volume studies the mass cinema ape-fantasies from pre-history to the amazingly successful "Planet of the Apes" series. It delves deeply into the most famous ape of all- King Kong- and into the split between his nature and man's. What exactly did King Kong represent? Was he a brute or a lover? Was King Kong the personification of destruction and lust, or was he man's hopeless pursuit of the woman in white? By studying such movies as King Kong, Beauty and the Beast, Blonde Venus, The Return of the Ape Man, Circus of Horrors, Gorilla at Large, Morgan and many others, this exciting cinematic history illuminates that dark place where the beast still snarls in man."- BOOK JACKETNotes: Published by Lorrimer under title, Ape; the kingdom of Kong.ISBN: 0517521563Donation: donated by the family of Wayne Levy, 2006Contents: Contents-- Descent of Ape: page 7 -- Making of Kong: page 27 -- Kin of Kong: page:53 -- Ape Dreams: page 77

The Company of Wolves / by James Gracey Leighton Buzzard: Auteur Publishing, 2017.

Unraveling a feverish metaphor for the blossoming of a young girl's sexuality and her subsequent loss of innocence, the film entwines symbolism and metaphor with striking visuals and grisly effects. Released in the early 1980s, a time which produced several classic werewolf films (including An American Werewolf in London and The Howling), The Company of Wolves sets itself apart from the pack with its overtly literary roots, feminist stance, and art-house leanings. The film's narrative takes the form of a puzzle box, unfolding as dreams within dreams, and stories within stories, which lead further into the dark woods of the protagonist's psyche, as she finds herself on the cusp of womanhood. This Devil's Advocate explores all these aspects, as well as placing the film in the context of the careers of its creators and its position as an example of the "Female Gothic."" -- Angus and RobertsonISBN: 9781911325314Contents: -- introduction -- chapter one: once upon a time -- Chapter two : telling tales -- chapter three: red hoods, dark woods -- chapter four: seeing red -- chapter five: the big bad wolf -- chapter six: 'a she-wolf came' -- chapter seven: happily ever after -- bibliography --

Rumblings from Australia's deep south : Tasmanian gothic on-screen in Studies in Australasian cinema (2011) vol.5 iss.1 p.71-80
Author: Bullock, Emily PhysDes: ArticleSubject: FANTASTIC FILMS. AUSTRALIA ; LOCATION SHOOTING. AUSTRALIA: TASMANIA ; CANNIBALISM IN FILMS ; LANDSCAPES IN FILMS. AUSTRALIA Summary: This article examines the current cinematic attention to Tasmania and its stories, with particular attention paid to the Gothic mode. ‘Tasmanian Gothic’ has become a by-word for the unsettling combination of Tasmania's colonial histories and its harsh landscapes in literature, but its cinematic counterpart has virtually been ignored. It is suggested that Tasmania is experiencing a renaissance on the big screen and it is the Gothic that appears to be the most dominant mode through which it is pictured. The article then charts a history of local Tasmanian Gothic cinematic production, a hybrid vision that tends towards a combination of stylistic, thematic, historical and geographic elements. Tasmanian Gothic cinema refers not simply to productions by Tasmanian film-makers, but to the broader on-screen representation of the island, its culture and histories by a range of local, interstate and international crews. As this article suggests, Gothic cinematic representations of Tasmania are yoked by a number of persistent concerns that act in dialogue with the unique cultural and geographic positioning of Australia's only island state. --Abstract

'The locals' and the global : transnational currents in contemporary New Zealand horror in Studies in Australasian cinema (2010) vol.4 iss.1 p.73-79
Author: Cameron, Allan PhysDes: ArticleSubject: NATIONAL IDENTITY AND THE CINEMA. NEW ZEALAND ; HORROR FILMS. NEW ZEALAND ; INDUSTRY, FILM. NEW ZEALAND ; FANTASTIC FILMS ; LOCALS, THE (NZ, Greg Page, 2003) ; BLACK SHEEP (NZ, Jonathan King, 2006) ; FERRYMAN, THE (NZ/UK, Chris Graham, 2007) ; TATTOOIST, THE (NZ/SI, Peter Berger, 2007) ; PERFECT CREATURE (NZ/UK, Glenn Standring, 2006) Summary: Article arguing the connectedness between otherness of horror with the otherness of cultural identities within New Zealand horror film.Notes: Recent years have seen a conspicuous resurgence of the horror genre in New
Zealand cinema. What sets recent New Zealand horror films apart from their
local antecedents, however, is their self-conscious reframing of local identity
against an international backdrop. Contemporary Kiwi horrors such as The
Locals, Black Sheep, The Tattooist and Perfect Creature effectively extend
horror’s characteristic focus on questions of otherness to the otherness of local
and global cultural identities. In this way, they subject New Zealand cinema’s
Gothic tradition to a type of remapping, in which the Gothic is ironized, hybridized
or displaced. In a number of these films (several of which are international
co-productions) the Gothic even comes untethered from the local landscape and
moves across national frontiers. By reworking the tropes of New Zealand horror,
these films take up the challenge of re-articulating New Zealand identities for
the early twenty-first century, producing a palimpsestic vision of nationhood
determined not by essences but by codes.--Abstract
