The art of horror in Lumina (2009) iss.1 p.84-91 Author: Cameron, Allan PhysDes: Article Subject: HORROR FILMS. AUSTRALIA; GENRES; INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; AUDIENCES. AUSTRALIA Summary: Article discussing the tension between government funded films and the so called 'low-brow' films that proved popular with Australian audiences: sex comedies, action thrillers and horror movies. Cameron argues that horror films need not be arthouse to be art so the binary logic of current debates - low 'genuine' horror vs acceptable, well made - is a disservice to the genre.

Australian cinema's dark sun in Studies in Australasian cinema (2010) vol.4 iss.1 p.23-41 Author: Ryan, Mark David PhysDes: Article Subject: HORROR FILMS. AUSTRALIA; INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; FUNDING. AUSTRALIA; AUDIENCES. AUSTRALIA; WOLF CREEK (AT, Greg McLean, 2005) Summary: This article argues that the renaissance of Australian horror films in the 2000s has been driven by intersecting international market forces, domestic financing factors and technological change. It argues for two distinct tiers of production with different financing, production and distribution models. Notes: There has been a boom in Australian horror movie production in recent years.
Daybreakers (2010), Wolf Creek (2005), Rogue (2007), Undead (2003), Black
Water (2008), and Storm Warning (2006), among others, have all experienced
varying degrees of popularity, mainstream visibility and cult success in worldwide
horror markets. While Aussie horror’s renaissance is widely acknowledged in industry
literature, there is limited research into the extent of the boom and the dynamics
of production. Consequently, there are few explanations for why and how this
surge has occurred. This article argues that the recent growth in Australian horror
films has been driven by intersecting international market forces, domestic financing
factors and technological change. In so doing, it identifies two distinct tiers of
Australian horror film production: ‘mainstream’ and ‘underground’ production,
though overlap between these two tiers results in ‘high-end indie’ films capable of
cinema release. Each tier represents the high and low ends of Australian horror film
production, each with different financing, production and distribution models. -- Abstract

Or avocados? During the heady years of tax incentives and 10BA it didn't much matter to Australian investors where they put their surplus funds. For the Australian film industry, booming after the creative revival of the 1970s, the next decade became one of confusion and controversy. In THE AVOCADO PLANTATION, David Stratton gives us a comprehensive look at the making of 270 film features between 1980 and 1990. He discusses the big name attractions - GALLIPOLI, THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER, MAD MAX 2, CROCODILE DUNDEE, MAN OF FLOWERS, SWEETIE - and a host of lesser known films. Adventure films, horror films, love stories, comedies, they're all here: the smash hits, the turkets and the quality movies appreciated by discerning audiences. Stratton tells the behind-the-scenes stories of how the films were made - or in some casxes, un-made. He talks with directors such as Peter Weir, George Miller and Paul Cox, as well as producers, writers, actors, and crew members. Their reflections and revelations form a major part of THE AVOCADO PLANTATION." [Taken from book jacket] Notes: Includes index ISBN: 0732902509 LON: 7520974 Donation: Simon Wincer ID2: 255

AUSTRALIA; CONNOLLY, ROBERT; LANTANA (AT, Ray Lawrence, 2001); LOOK BOTH WAYS (AT, Sarah Watt, 2005); BANK, THE (AT/IT, Robert Connolly, 2001) Summary: Mainly about the fortunes of the Australian film industry in 2005, in comparison to the earlier years in the decade. Some interesting stats on The Bank which shine a light on the importance of DVD sales and TV sales on top of Box Office. Notes: accessed from: Factiva. Dow Jones Reuters Business Interactive LLC. RMIT University Library. (14 May 2007). Quotations: -- Assessing the precise value of these additional revenue streams is difficult, but they are important. The experience of the 2001 film The Bank is instructive. Like several of this year's movies, this financial thriller earned about $2.6 million during its original box-office run, which means that about 260,000 Australians saw it on the big screen. But after being released on home formats, and screen on pay and free-to-air TV, its total audience has built to more than 3 million, according to director Robert Connolly.; -- This "accured interest" suggests that the theatrical release can account for less than 10 per cent of a film's eventual audience reach. "My suspicion is that because of the cost of a movie ticket people are increasingly going to the the cinema to see spectable and choosing to see Australian films at home," says Connolly, who also directed Three Dollars. Still, for most films it is the success, however measured, of the theatrical release that largely determines its subsequent fate in other formats, making a strong splash in cinemas just as critical as ever.

Offering fresh critical perspectives and extending previous scholarship, case studies range from The Lego Movie, Mad Max and Australian stars in Hollywood, to transnational co-productions, YouTube channels, transmedia and naturecam documentaries. New research on trends such as the Blak Wave, the convergence of television and film, digital transformations of screen production and the shifting roles of women, on and off-screen, highlight how established precedents have been transformed by new realities beyond both cinema and national borders. --
Written in an accessible style that does not require knowledge of cinema studies or Australian studies. --
Presents original research on Australian actors such as Cate Blanchett and Chris Hemsworth, evaluating their training, branding and path from Australia to Hollywood. --

Database economy and transnational cinema in Studies in Australasian cinema (2009) vol.3 iss.2 p.155-166 Author: Cubitt, Sean PhysDes: Article Subject: DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY. AUSTRALIA; DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY. NEW ZEALAND; DIGITAL PROJECTION; INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; INDUSTRY, FILM. NEW ZEALAND Summary: Digital or electronic cinemas are dependent on a global regime of standards covering such features as aspect ratios, colour gamuts, screen resolution and compression-decompression algorithms. These standards are worked out by a variety of intersecting organizations representing a variety of interests. This article argues that such standardization is isomorphic with the convergence of biopolitical and commodity forms in an emergent political economy that can be described as a database economy. This infrastructure of standards and ordering principles constitutes an actually existing transnational public sphere. The article discusses the possibilities for developing an alter-globalizing public sphere in digital cinemas, testing three possible avenues: cinemas of the silent majority, new modes of distribution and content-driven approaches. It concludes by asking whether vanguard practices of building new forms of cinema apparatus may be essential to the construction of alter-globalizing transnational cinemas. -- Abstract Notes: Part of a special issue on digital cinema in Australia and New Zealand

It explains how these films came to be shown in Europe, how and why they caught the imagination of German reviewers and film-makers at the time, and how they themselves contributed to the begetting of several German films on Aboriginal themes including Nina Gladitz's documentary Das Uran gehrt der Regenbogenschlange (The Uranium Belongs to the Rainbow Serpent) (1979), Werner Herzog's Where the Green Ants Dream (1984) and Wim Wenders' Until the End of the World (1991).

Historicizing transition in Australian cinema: the moment of Emerald city in Studies in Australasian cinema (2007) vol.1 iss.1 p.29-46 Author: Craven, Ian PhysDes: Article Subject: INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; FINANCING. AUSTRALIA; AUSTRALIAN FILM FINANCE CORPORATION; EMERALD CITY (AT, Michael Jenkins, 1988) Summary: This article maps a series of connections between the feature film Emerald city (1988) and a range of contexts seens as informing its generation, operation and reception. Emphasis is placed upon the synchronicity of the movie's appearance with key shifts in government film policy, and the emergence of new critical paradigms within the academy, which reorganized dominany understandings of Australian cinema, and questioned the cultural value assigned to particular works and genres. Through this ' conjectural' analysis, Emerald city is reread as not only a symptomatic work, marking transitions between 'new wave' films-making and the 'post-national' cinema of the 1990s, but is re-evaluated as a significant film, provocative of fresh approaches to both the historiography and practical management of Australian cinema, detectable within more recent archaeologies of screen 'content' and the rhetorics of film policy formulated in its wake'--Abstract

AUSTRALIA : NEW SOUTH WALES; FOX STUDIOS (SYDNEY); NEW SOUTH WALES FILM AND TELEVISION OFFICE; SUPERMAN RETURNS (AT/US, Bryan Singer, 2006); FOOTY LEGENDS (AT, Khoa Do, 2006) Summary: This article addresses the presence of the large mainly Hollywood productions in the city of Sydney and the perception that there is a marked difference between a film industry in Sydney and a Sydney film industry. Rather than viewing the two figurations of film-making in Sydney as two distinct entities, an approach inspired by Actor-Network Theory (ANT) is deployed, using interview and ethnographic data to argue that is the networks and collaborative connections within the industry in Sydney, and between Sydney and other cities, are considered, Sydney's position within the global film industry becomes clearer.--Abstract

Call No: 81STI DAN Author: Dando-Collins, Stephen Source: AT Place: North Sydney Publisher: Penguin Random House Australia Pty Ltd PubDate: 2017 PhysDes: xi, 418 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations (some in colour), portraits ; 24 cm. Subject: PRODUCERS; DIRECTORS; THEATRE AND THE CINEMA; AUSTRALIA; INDUSTRY, FILM; INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; STIGWOOD, ROBERT Summary: "In the 1970s, Australian entrepreneur Robert Stigwood was the entertainment industry's most powerful tycoon. This is his largest-than-life story. Stiggy's ability to pick and promote talent was astounding. He came to renown managing the careers of the Bee Gees, Cream and Eric Clapton and Grease, and was behind the massive West End and Broadway musicals Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. There were also great crashes, including an infamous Chuck Berry tour that failed to attract audiences and forced the Australian impresario into bankruptcy. The failure of the big-budget musical film of the Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band also cut deep. Throughout it all, Stigwood lived it up with champagne, staff, private planes, yachts and luxury penthouses. The parties he hosted were legendary, as was his ability to party all night long and pull off a substantial business deal the next morning. Great rifts arose in almost all of his closest personal and professional relationships, but his gift for friendship and enormous talents in the entertainment business generally saw rapprochement. Not for nothing was Robert Stigwood dubbed "Mt Showbiz". Old debts: the unsung relationship between Australia's film and advertising industries in Studies in Australasian cinema (2008) vol.2 iss.1 p.33-45 Author: Crawford, Robert PhysDes: Article Subject: INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; ADVERTISING. AUSTRALIA; HISTORY OF CINEMA. AUSTRALIA; ADVERTISING. TV. AUSTRALIA; ADVENTURES OF BARRY MCKENZIE, THE (AT, Bruce Beresford, 1972); CROCODILE DUNDEE (AT, Peter Faiman, 1986) Summary: This study surveys the relationship that has developed between Australia's advertising and film industries from the early twentieth century to the present. Throughout this period there has been a continuous exchange of skills, talent and ideas between the two industries. While the flow has been two ways, it will be argued that the advertising industry's contribution to the film industry has been greater. Australia's advertising industry functioned as a nursery for the nation's film industry, identifying and training the nation's aspiring film-makers whilst providing them with access to a large audience. The globalization of both industries has similarly reinforced this relationship, ensuring that the film industry remains indebted to its commercial cousin. -- Abstract

Outward-looking Australian cinema in Studies in Australasian cinema (2010) vol.4 iss.3 p.199-214 Author: Goldsmith, Ben PhysDes: Article Subject: INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; PRODUCTION DEALS. AUSTRALIA; DISTRIBUTION. AUSTRALIA; NATIONAL CULTURE AND THE CINEMA. AUSTRALIA Summary: The writer examines how dynamic and shifting relations between the local/national and the international have transformed the ways in which people think about what constitutes Australian cinema. Noting that over the last 20 years or so, Australian cinema's international relations in production and policy have expanded and become more complex, while those with Hollywood have been transformed, he illustrates how relations of commonality and continuity with the international called up in the new arrangements challenge the dominant articulation in policy of difference from other kinds of filmmaking as the basis of Australian cinema. -- Provided by publisher

The overlanders: between nations in Studies in Australasian cinema (2007) vol.1 iss.1 p.79-89 Author: Williams, Deane PhysDes: Article Subject: INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; OVERLANDERS, THE (UK, Harry Watt, 1946) Summary: This article argues that Harry Watt's The overlandrs (1946), an Ealing Studios film shot in Australia, should be understood as an international film product, one with a foot in the post-war cultural histories of both Australia and Britain. In this sense the film requires different reading strategies to those used within a national cinema framework. The article resists 'settling' the account, or justifying the film's raison d'etre with respect to only one of nationalist discourse, arguing that a reliable and truthful account of The overlanders will always be a composite one. -- Abstract

Ozploitation compared to what? : A challenge to contemporary Australian film studies. in Studies in Australasian Cinema (2010) vol.4 iss.1 p.9-21 Author: Martin, Adrian PhysDes: Article Subject: INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; GENRES. AUSTRALIA; NATIONAL CULTURE AND THE CINEMA. AUSTRALIA; NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD (AT, Mark Hartley, 2008) Summary: Discussion of critical attention given to 'Ozploitation' films particularly after 'Not Quite Hollywood'. Martin argues suggests current focus on this repressed strain of national cinema excludes many genres and therefore provides limited insight into Australian cinema. Notes: Australian exploitation cinema of the 1970s and 1980s has swiftly become a fashionable topic for analysis, rehabilitation and celebration, especially in the wake of the popular documentary Not Quite Hollywood featuring Quentin Tarantino. Is this Australian cinema's ‘return of the repressed’, at last, in the form of tough, vulgar, anarchic genre pictures – and does this show the way forward for our national cinema? This essay questions many aspects of the ‘Ozploitation’ craze, including its exclusion of art, intellectual or experimental cinema, and its peculiar streamlining of an extremely variegated and still obfuscated national film history. In particular, I argue for a comparative approach to national film cultures – which, in this case, would compel us to ask other, more stringent questions about the ultimate value of the currently baptized Ozploitation ‘classics’. -- ABSTRACT

Peter Carey's and Ray Lawrence's Bliss (1985) : fiction, film and power in Studies in Australasian cinema (2009) vol.3 iss.3 p.279-294 Author: Dixon, Robert PhysDes: Article Subject: INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; CONSUMERISM IN FILMS; BLISS (AT, Ray Lawrence, 1985) Summary: This article looks into the uncertain cultural politics of Ray Lawrence's 1985 film adaptation of Peter Carey's Bliss (1981) perhaps one reason for critical reticence about it to examine the functioning of the film as a critique of the options aesthetic, commercial and political within the inherited aesthetic force field of the period. The film is considered in two ways: first, with regard to the question of why Bliss has come to be regarded as a key film in the story of the Australian movies, as a kind of liberation point a leap away from naturalism and the historical realism of the new wave of the 1970s (Byrnes 2008); and second, with regard to its main theme, the satiric treatment of advertising, American consumerism and commodity culture. What lies at the heart of this is the complex relationship between representation and power, and this will be considered in terms of the paradox that Blisscriticizes consumerism while being aware of its own aspirations as a commercial feature film, and therefore a commodity. This is what is meant by the film's uncertain cultural politics: the paradox arises from the fact that cinema is both an artistic and a commercial medium; as a culture-industry, it seeks to criticize the commercial processes in which it is itself embedded. -- Abstract

AUSTRALIA : NEW SOUTH WALES; WEIR, PETER; PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (AT, Peter Weir, 1975); YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY, THE (AT, Peter Weir, 1982); WITNESS (US, Peter Weir, 1985); TRUMAN SHOW, THE (US, Peter Weir, 1998) Summary: "The cinematic output of Australian director Peter Weir has garnered numerous awards and widespread critical acclaim-from his early short films of the 1970s to the Hollywood hits he's helmed since 1985, including the likes of Witness, Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, and Master and Commander.
Drawing on contemporary concepts from transnational cinema studies, this book investigates Weir's entire three-decade career, paying particular attention to his journey from his native Sydney, with its largely auteur-driven national cinema, to the miltimillion-dollar Hollywood film industry with its many genre conventions. Along the way, the author explores a host of questions accompanying this move, including Weir's status as a transnational filmmaker and a more generalised discussion of the critically controversial idea of the auteur. Rounding out this volume are interviews with leading Hollywood filmmakers who discuss Weir's work."-BOOK BLURB Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 173-193) and filmography (p. 195-202) ISBN: 9781841504773 Contents: -- acknowldegments -- Introduction -- Migrations and transnationalism in the cinema -- Perspectives on Peter Weir -- Australian production context in the 1970s and early 1980s -- Peter Weir's four key steps from Australia to Hollywood -- Conclusions -- Bibliography -- Appendix 1: Filmography - main credits -- Appendix 2: Films made in Hollywood by Australian directors -- URL status: URL: 'https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/rmit/detail.action?docID=1069409'
