The art of horror in Lumina (2009) iss.1 p.84-91 Author: Cameron, Allan PhysDes: Article Subject: HORROR FILMS. AUSTRALIA; GENRES; INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; AUDIENCES. AUSTRALIA Summary: Article discussing the tension between government funded films and the so called 'low-brow' films that proved popular with Australian audiences: sex comedies, action thrillers and horror movies. Cameron argues that horror films need not be arthouse to be art so the binary logic of current debates - low 'genuine' horror vs acceptable, well made - is a disservice to the genre.

Australian cinema's dark sun in Studies in Australasian cinema (2010) vol.4 iss.1 p.23-41 Author: Ryan, Mark David PhysDes: Article Subject: HORROR FILMS. AUSTRALIA; INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; FUNDING. AUSTRALIA; AUDIENCES. AUSTRALIA; WOLF CREEK (AT, Greg McLean, 2005) Summary: This article argues that the renaissance of Australian horror films in the 2000s has been driven by intersecting international market forces, domestic financing factors and technological change. It argues for two distinct tiers of production with different financing, production and distribution models. Notes: There has been a boom in Australian horror movie production in recent years.
Daybreakers (2010), Wolf Creek (2005), Rogue (2007), Undead (2003), Black
Water (2008), and Storm Warning (2006), among others, have all experienced
varying degrees of popularity, mainstream visibility and cult success in worldwide
horror markets. While Aussie horror’s renaissance is widely acknowledged in industry
literature, there is limited research into the extent of the boom and the dynamics
of production. Consequently, there are few explanations for why and how this
surge has occurred. This article argues that the recent growth in Australian horror
films has been driven by intersecting international market forces, domestic financing
factors and technological change. In so doing, it identifies two distinct tiers of
Australian horror film production: ‘mainstream’ and ‘underground’ production,
though overlap between these two tiers results in ‘high-end indie’ films capable of
cinema release. Each tier represents the high and low ends of Australian horror film
production, each with different financing, production and distribution models. -- Abstract

Or avocados? During the heady years of tax incentives and 10BA it didn't much matter to Australian investors where they put their surplus funds. For the Australian film industry, booming after the creative revival of the 1970s, the next decade became one of confusion and controversy. In THE AVOCADO PLANTATION, David Stratton gives us a comprehensive look at the making of 270 film features between 1980 and 1990. He discusses the big name attractions - GALLIPOLI, THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER, MAD MAX 2, CROCODILE DUNDEE, MAN OF FLOWERS, SWEETIE - and a host of lesser known films. Adventure films, horror films, love stories, comedies, they're all here: the smash hits, the turkets and the quality movies appreciated by discerning audiences. Stratton tells the behind-the-scenes stories of how the films were made - or in some casxes, un-made. He talks with directors such as Peter Weir, George Miller and Paul Cox, as well as producers, writers, actors, and crew members. Their reflections and revelations form a major part of THE AVOCADO PLANTATION." [Taken from book jacket] Notes: Includes index ISBN: 0732902509 LON: 7520974 Donation: Simon Wincer ID2: 255

AUSTRALIA; CONNOLLY, ROBERT; LANTANA (AT, Ray Lawrence, 2001); LOOK BOTH WAYS (AT, Sarah Watt, 2005); BANK, THE (AT/IT, Robert Connolly, 2001) Summary: Mainly about the fortunes of the Australian film industry in 2005, in comparison to the earlier years in the decade. Some interesting stats on The Bank which shine a light on the importance of DVD sales and TV sales on top of Box Office. Notes: accessed from: Factiva. Dow Jones Reuters Business Interactive LLC. RMIT University Library. (14 May 2007). Quotations: -- Assessing the precise value of these additional revenue streams is difficult, but they are important. The experience of the 2001 film The Bank is instructive. Like several of this year's movies, this financial thriller earned about $2.6 million during its original box-office run, which means that about 260,000 Australians saw it on the big screen. But after being released on home formats, and screen on pay and free-to-air TV, its total audience has built to more than 3 million, according to director Robert Connolly.; -- This "accured interest" suggests that the theatrical release can account for less than 10 per cent of a film's eventual audience reach. "My suspicion is that because of the cost of a movie ticket people are increasingly going to the the cinema to see spectable and choosing to see Australian films at home," says Connolly, who also directed Three Dollars. Still, for most films it is the success, however measured, of the theatrical release that largely determines its subsequent fate in other formats, making a strong splash in cinemas just as critical as ever.

Many studios, in a range of locations, now have the size and sophistication to service large-budget feature film production. This comprehensive study of contemporary international studio considers the circumstances in which this rash of studio complex building and renovating has occurred – in places as diverse as Rome, London, Berlin, Prague, Vancouver, Toronto, Sydney, the Gold Coast and Melbourne. Central to the study is an understanding of studio complexes as cinema and media cities providing not only sound stages but a full range of production and post-production services in the one location. Cinema Cities, Media Cities is the first published analysis of this new international studio system, its origins, its business and its policy contexts. [Taken from back cover.] ISBN: 0958015279

Offering fresh critical perspectives and extending previous scholarship, case studies range from The Lego Movie, Mad Max and Australian stars in Hollywood, to transnational co-productions, YouTube channels, transmedia and naturecam documentaries. New research on trends such as the Blak Wave, the convergence of television and film, digital transformations of screen production and the shifting roles of women, on and off-screen, highlight how established precedents have been transformed by new realities beyond both cinema and national borders. --
Written in an accessible style that does not require knowledge of cinema studies or Australian studies. --

Database economy and transnational cinema in Studies in Australasian cinema (2009) vol.3 iss.2 p.155-166 Author: Cubitt, Sean PhysDes: Article Subject: DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY. AUSTRALIA; DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY. NEW ZEALAND; DIGITAL PROJECTION; INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; INDUSTRY, FILM. NEW ZEALAND Summary: Digital or electronic cinemas are dependent on a global regime of standards covering such features as aspect ratios, colour gamuts, screen resolution and compression-decompression algorithms. These standards are worked out by a variety of intersecting organizations representing a variety of interests. This article argues that such standardization is isomorphic with the convergence of biopolitical and commodity forms in an emergent political economy that can be described as a database economy. This infrastructure of standards and ordering principles constitutes an actually existing transnational public sphere. The article discusses the possibilities for developing an alter-globalizing public sphere in digital cinemas, testing three possible avenues: cinemas of the silent majority, new modes of distribution and content-driven approaches. It concludes by asking whether vanguard practices of building new forms of cinema apparatus may be essential to the construction of alter-globalizing transnational cinemas. -- Abstract Notes: Part of a special issue on digital cinema in Australia and New Zealand

Despite its institutional significance, its decisive impact on the dynamics of entire film industries, the aspirations of film practioners, and the content and form of the films that are produced, practice-based film education is still a neglected topic in film scholarship. The Education of the Filmmaker in Europe, Australia, and Asia is an attempt to begin to fill the lacuna in question by looking at film training programs in countries such as Lithuania, Scotland, Sweden, Australia, Japan, and others. Examining aspects of flimmaking such as environmental impact, influences on local culture, and sway over city policy, this book looks at how training of filmmakers reaches beyond the films themselves to all aspects of culture and society. Federation news : journal of the Federation of Victorian Film Societies Carlton, Vic.: Federation of Victorian Film Societies, Call No: held v.1 no.1-v.24 no.102 Sept. 1955-Dec. 1979 incomplete CorpAuthor: Federation of Victorian Film Societies; Federation news (Carlton, Vic.) Source: AT Place: Carlton, Vic. Publisher: Federation of Victorian Film Societies PhysDes: v. : ill. ; 28 cm Subject: SOCIETIES, FILM. AUSTRALIA. VICTORIA; FEDERATION OF VICTORIAN FILM SOCIETIES Summary: Federation News was a quarterly publication produced by the Federation of Victorian Film Societies. The journal promoted participation in local film societies, publishing a ‘Film Society Diary’ of upcoming screenings and events. Each issue profiled a different society in a section titled ‘Know Your Film Society’, providing information on the their history, focus and of course - screenings.
Federation News supported the activities of societies by providing information and reviews of available film prints, from sources including embassies and consulates, the State Film Centre and the National Library of Australia. The breadth of films profiled is almost encyclopedic, covering not just feature films but newsreels, actualities, tourism films, government films, and information films produced by businesses, such as Kodak and Qantas.
From 1955 to 1973, the journal was edited by George Lugg, a chemist who worked as an ‘Experimental Officer’ for the Department of Defence from 1958 - 1973. Lugg was a man of mystery. In 1966, Robert Rothols, who later succeeded Lugg as Editor of Federation News, was asked to guest edit an issue as Lugg would be away. Rothols later wrote, “George just went. For pleasure? For work? I didn’t ask.”
Soon after, Rothols was at a film screening and caught a newsreel about a simulated atomic bomb test in Queensland. “There, after the blast, were the research scientists examining the aftermath. And there in widescreen 70mm, was George, collecting specimens.”
When Lugg resigned from Federation News in 1973 due to his ailing health, he had collected and curated an extensive film reference library. The Federation bought the collection from Lugg, and later established the George Lugg Library at the AFI, which ultimately became the AFI Research Collection.
Federation News ceased publication in 1979, only six years after Lugg left. -- AFIRC Notes: Continued by: Filmviews; Description based on: Vol. 23, no. 4 (Dec. 1978); title from cover ISSN: 0046-3582 Frequency: Quarterly LON: cvx00402014; 2557807 7296531

Film-induced tourism Clevedon: Channel View Publications, 2005. Call No: 230:33 BEE Author: Sue Beeton Place: Clevedon Publisher: Channel View Publications PubDate: 2005 PhysDes: 270 p. ; 23 cm Series: Aspects of Tourism Subject: TRAVEL IN FILMS; LOCATION SHOOTING. AUSTRALIA; LOCATION SHOOTING. USA; LOCATION SHOOTING. UK; ADVERTISING FOR FILMS; NEW ZEALAND; STUDIOS, FILM. AUSTRALIA Summary: Tourism to places where movies and television series have been filmed is not a new phenomenon, having its roots in literary tourism. Whilst there is a growing recognition of the significance of film as a motivator for tourism, studies in this field are limited. However, film is more than a simple place promotion tool. Representing over five years of study into film-induced tourism, this publication considers aspects of tourism to film studios as well as film sites. Genres and styles of film considered include popular fictional movies, cult movies, television series and animation, and covers destinations form New York to Scotland, England and rural Australia. The potential of film-induced tourism as a motivator is explored, along with more negative effects, particularly in relation to small communities. The study of this complex field draws on elements of sociology and psychology, destination marketing, community development and strategic planning. [Taken from back cover.] ISBN: 1845410149

AUSTRALIA; URAN GEHOERT DER REGENBOGENSCHLANGE, DAS (GW, Nina Gladitz, 1978); WO DIE GRUNEN AMEISEN TRAUMEN (GW, Werner Herzog, 1984); BIS ANS ENDE DER WELT (GG/FR/AT, Wim Wenders, 1991) Summary: This article examines some aspects of the West German reception of a series of Australian films about Aborigines including Peter Weir's The Last Wave (1977), Phillip Noyce's Backroads (1977) and Michael Edols' Lalai and Floating (1973 and 1975) which were shown in Germany and elsewhere in Europe in 1978 and 1979. It explains how these films came to be shown in Europe, how and why they caught the imagination of German reviewers and film-makers at the time, and how they themselves contributed to the begetting of several German films on Aboriginal themes including Nina Gladitz's documentary Das Uran gehrt der Regenbogenschlange (The Uranium Belongs to the Rainbow Serpent) (1979), Werner Herzog's Where the Green Ants Dream (1984) and Wim Wenders' Until the End of the World (1991).

Go! Melbourne : Melbourne in the sixties Melbourne, Australia: Circa, 2005. Call No: 12(94) GOM Author: O'Hanlon, Seamus (ed.); Luckins, Tanja (ed.); Danks, Adrian Place: Melbourne, Australia Publisher: Circa PubDate: 2005 PhysDes: 21 cm ; 284 pp Subject: SOCIETIES, FILM. AUSTRALIA. VICTORIA Summary: What were the 1960s really like in Melbourne? Was it just great music, brightly coloured clothes and The Pill? Or was there something deeper and perhaps more insidious happening? This fab new book takes a close look at the many cultural changes of the Sixties and how they affected the Victorian capital - and questions modern-day views about the way times actually did 'a' change'. Go! Melbourne in the Sixties covers defining moments like the visit of The Beatles, the end of the six o'clock closing, political activism, Jean Shrimpton at Flemington, as well as increases in tertiary study opportunities, dramatic population growth through migration and a baby-boom, and sets them in the context of a decade that many continue to see as a golden era. [Taken from back cover] Of particular relevance here is Adrian Danks' chapter on the Melbourne University Film Society (MUFS) entitled "Arrested Developments or from 'The Heroes are Tired' to 'The Tomb of Ligeia': Some Notes on the Place of the Melbourne University Film Society in 1960s Film Culture" which traces the origins of the film society, its contribution to Melbourne cultural life, its output (not just in exhibition but production and publishing) and its legacy. Historicizing transition in Australian cinema: the moment of Emerald city in Studies in Australasian cinema (2007) vol.1 iss.1 p.29-46 Author: Craven, Ian PhysDes: Article Subject: INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; FINANCING. AUSTRALIA; AUSTRALIAN FILM FINANCE CORPORATION; EMERALD CITY (AT, Michael Jenkins, 1988) Summary: This article maps a series of connections between the feature film Emerald city (1988) and a range of contexts seens as informing its generation, operation and reception. Emphasis is placed upon the synchronicity of the movie's appearance with key shifts in government film policy, and the emergence of new critical paradigms within the academy, which reorganized dominany understandings of Australian cinema, and questioned the cultural value assigned to particular works and genres. Through this ' conjectural' analysis, Emerald city is reread as not only a symptomatic work, marking transitions between 'new wave' films-making and the 'post-national' cinema of the 1990s, but is re-evaluated as a significant film, provocative of fresh approaches to both the historiography and practical management of Australian cinema, detectable within more recent archaeologies of screen 'content' and the rhetorics of film policy formulated in its wake'--Abstract
