This book provides the first study which systematically explores the ‘coming of age’ theme in Australian feature films produced since the turn of the millennium, foregrounding how films use a range of diverse (his)stories to respond to the centrality of this theme.
Rather than focussing on ‘coming of age’ mainly in its portrayal of a (successful) maturation process, this study explores the possibilities inherent in what is conceived of as a ‘permanently’ transitional ‘coming of age’ process, providing a crucial starting point for the re-definition of national fictions. A range of cinematic genres, including the road movie, crime film, sport film, romance and musical, is used to challenge and (to varying degrees) destabilise the national myth of Australia as a youthful, egalitarian society with a chance and ‘fair go’ for everyone. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9783825369187

It reworks Pasolini's landmark concept of 'the cinema of poetry' to look at the transformation of film form in its encounter with society, the sacred, the subjective and the presence of the camera. In the 1970s, the influential forms of a cinema of poetry are analysed in key features by Altman, Herzog, Malick, Scorsese, Weir, Von Trotta and Tarkovsky while in the 1980s and 1990s the emergence of new filmmakers has meant a diffusion of different cinemas of poetry using new techniques and new poetries. Of key importance here is the work of Kieslowski, Lynch, Egoyan, Campion, Greenaway, Zhang Yimou, Tran Anh Hung and Wong Kar-Wai, as well as the reinvention of science fiction and film noir in American genre."

In the first part of the book, he looks at the strategies Hollywood has employed to deflect or absorb the ideological challenges posed by the feminist critique of contemporary American society. He demonstrates the ways in which mainstream movies and television programs, no matter how unconventional or "subversive" they may appear, produce and reproduce familiar images of sexuality and gender identity. In the second part, Green highlights instances in which reproduction of the dominant ideology is less successful by examining several recent cinematic genres - the female action movie, the rape-revenge cycle, and the new film noir - that portray the real ambiguities of a social order in upheaval; As a male consumer of the cultural commodities being discussed, the author offers a perspective on American films and television different from that of most other feminist criticsNotes: Includes bibliographical references (p. They link together political and social factors with matters of 'documentary language', addressing the particular questions of representational realism and of public communication which documentaries so sharply raise but which are relevant to a far wider range of mass media activities.
The specially commissioned essays in this volume offer a stimulating exploration of a lively and powerful mode; several indeed open up entirely new areas of media analysis. All are likely to offer the reader fresh insights." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Mass media. This volume identifies and investigates a far wider array of problems posed by the process of adaptation.
Thomas Leitch considers how the creators of short silent films attempted to give them the weight of literature, what sorts of fidelity are possible in an adaptation of sacred scripture, what it means for an adaptation to pose as an introduction to, rather than a transcription of, a literary classic, and why and how some films have sought impossibly close fidelity to their sources. Leitch's analysis moves beyond literary sources to consider why a small number of adaptors have risen to the status of auteurs and how illustrated books, comic strips, video games, and true stories have been adaptated to the screen." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Formerly CIP; Includes bibliographical references (p. Film ecology : defending the biosphere - doughnut economics and film theory and practice / Susan Hayward London, New York: Routledge,
Call No: 738.1 HAYAuthor: Hayward, Susan Edition: 2020Place: London, New YorkPublisher: RoutledgePhysDes: 116 pages : figures ; 23cmSubject: ECOLOGY FILMS ; MILDRED PIERCE (US, Michael Curtis, 1945) ; GIANT (US, George Stevens, 1956) ; ERIN BROKOVICH (US, Stephen Soderbergh, 2000) ; WALL STREET (US, Oliver Stone, 1987) ; WOLF OF WALL STREET, THE (US, Martin Scorsese, 2013) ; HOTEL RWANDA (SA/UK/IT/US, Terry George, 2004) Summary: Using the Regenerative economic model – also known as Doughnut Economics – Susan Hayward offers a thought-provoking sketch for a renewed, tentatively revolutionary approach to both film theory and film practice.
This book attempts to answer the questions posed by T.J. Demos (in Against the Anthropocene, 2017): how do we find a way to address planetary harm and the issues it raises within the field of Film Studies? How do we construct a theoretical model that allows us to visualize the ecological transgressions brought about by the growth-model of capitalism which is heavily endorsed by mainstream narrative cinema? By turning to the model set out in Kate Raworth’s book Doughnut Economics (2017) and adapting its fundamental principles to a study of narrative cinema, Film Ecology proposes to show how, by using this model, we can usefully plot and investigate films according to criteria that are not genre/star/auteur-led, nor indeed embedded in anthropocentric theoretical models, but principles which are ecologically based. These arguments are brought to life with examples from mainstream narrative films such as The Giant (1956), Mildred Pierce (1945), Erin Brockovich (2000), Wall Street (1987), Hotel Rwanda (2004), and Missing Figures (2016).
This approach will inspire film practitioners, film theorists, critics and analysts, film students and film lovers alike to consider how they might integrate this Doughnut model into their thinking or work as part of their process. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780367265519Contents: Introduction -- Chapter One: Film and ecology, Doughnut Economics, and film theory -- Chapter Two: Film and the Anthropocene: dirty Capitalism – Mildred Pierce (1945), Tulsa (1949), and Giant (1956) -- Chapter Three: Where we are now and where we need to be: from Source and Sink to Take > Make > Use > Re-use – Erin Brockovich (2000), Wall Street (1987), and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) -- Chapter Four: A moral imperative to REVOLT: Hotel Rwanda (2004) and Caphernaum (2018)

Scott MacDonald contextualises his discussion with wide-ranging and deeply informed analysis of the depiction of place in nineteenth and twentieth-century literature, painting and photography. Examining the representation of nature and landscape in particular, and location in general, MacDonald offers new readings of films under consideration as well as an expanded sense of modern film history."Notes: Includes distribution sources for films and videos (in US), notes and indexISBN: 0520227387

Most of these people have been interviewed so many times their answers had been turned to stone. Interviewers, too, are icon builders, and ask the same questions over and over. Celebreties, despite fame, are struggling to maintain their own living voices. It is Worrell's special gift as an interviewer and writer to hold up a mirror to the most closely held of reflections. The twenties saw the birth of celebrity, still so influential even today. With the influence of Freud and the unconscious came film noir, anticipated by dark European classics like La Bete Humaine; Hollywood in the fifties turned ideological fears into lurid sci-fi and body-snatching horror; with the social change of the sixties came refracted ways of seeing, from Alfie to theStargate sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey or a compelling seventies nightmares like Carrie. Moving towards our own century, Francine Stock considers how film reflects back on itself, bending time and technology to look to the future. More than a century on from those earliest awe-inspiring images, we are still in thrall to the power of film. In this fascinating, entertaining and illuminating book Francine Stock shows how film both reflects and remakes our world.ISBN: 9781845951993

Oliver Stone : wakeup cinema / Frank Beaver New York Toronto New York: Twayne Publishers Maxwell Macmillan Canada Maxwell Macmillan International, 1994.
Call No: 81STO BEAAuthor: Beaver, Frank Eugene Place: New York Toronto New YorkPublisher: Twayne Publishers Maxwell Macmillan Canada Maxwell Macmillan InternationalPubDate: 1994PhysDes: xvi, 243 p. : ill. ; 23 cmSeries: Twayne's filmmakers seriesSubject: STONE, OLIVER Summary: Oliver Stone is a master of in-your-face movie making. In picture after picture - in what the director refers to as "wakeup cinema" - he takes on big, controversial topics and verges on filmic assault of the audience to drive home his point of view. Stone's artistic warfare, evidenced in such widely seen films as Platoon and JFK, has brought him acclaim as one of the few commercially successful Hollywood directors unafraid to make bold, meaningful films and has brought him criticism as a self-anointed sayer of the truth on whatever subject his eye comes to rest; His provocative style has triggered an enormous critical response, with interviews, reviews, and commentaries numbering in the thousands - remarkable especially for a filmmaker whose first noteworthy film, Salvador, opened in 1986. In this thoroughgoing assessment of Stone's life and work, Frank Beaver not only uses the rich response to the films to inform his own analysis but makes the case that the director has used it as well. There is, Beaver suggests, "a telling symbiosis between critical response and ongoing practice in Stone's emergence as a unique director." Beaver explores the way in which criticism has undeniably helped to shape the course of Stone's ideas and filmmaking techniquesNotes: Filmography: p. 235-238; Includes bibliographical references (p. 200-234) and indexISBN: 0805793267 (alk. paper); 0805793321 (pbk. : alk. paper)LON: 93039729; 10549578

Drawing on many popular and some lesser known films from around the world, Christopher Falzon introduces students to key areas in philosophy, like: Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, The Theory of Knowledge, The Self and Personal Identity, Critical Thinking.
Perfect for beginners, this book guides the reader through philosophy using illuminating cinematic works, like Avatar, Inception, Fight Club, Wings of Desire, Run Lola Run, A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner, Dirty Harry and many other films.
The fully revised and updated Third Edition features: an expanded introduction that provides a new discussion of the relationship between film and philosophy; new material on notable philosophers such as Aristotle, Merleau-Ponty and Rawls; and coverage of new topics like virtue ethics and what Socrates offers for critical thinking. An updated glossary, references and bibliography, and a filmography, are also included in the Third Edition. -- publisher's web siteNotes: Includes glossaryISBN: 9780415538169Contents: Preface -- Introduction -- 1 - Plato’s Picture Show - the theory of knowledge -- 2 - All of Me - the self and personal identity -- 3 - Crimes and Misdemeanors - moral philosophy -- 4 - Antz - social and political philosophy -- 5 - Modern Times - society, science, and technology -- 6 - The Holy Grail - critical thinking -- Further Reading -- Glossary -- Bibliography -- Filmography -- Index

The space of sex : the porn aesthetic in contemporary film and television / Shelton Waldrep New York: Bloomsbury, 2021.
Call No: 749.2 WALAuthor: Waldrep, Shelton Edition: 2021Place: New YorkPublisher: BloomsburyPubDate: 2021PhysDes: 294 pages : illustrated ; 24 cmSubject: [TWO THOUSAND AND ONE] 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (UK, Stanley Kubrick, 1968) ; EYES WIDE SHUT (US/UK, Stanley Kubrick, 1999) ; FULL METAL JACKET (UK, Stanley Kubrick, 1987) ; KUBRICK, STANLEY ; PORNOGRAPHIC FILMS ; CANYONS, THE (US, Paul Schrader, 2013) ; MAGIC MIKE (US, Steven Soderbergh, 2012) ; SAVAGES (US, Oliver Stone, 2012) ; NYMPHOMANIAC [VOL. I AND VOL. II] (DK/G/BE/UK/FR, Lars von Trier, 2013) ; LOVE (FR/BE, Gaspar Noe, 2015) ; JAMES BOND IN FILMS Summary: As film and television become ever more focused on the pornographic gaze of the camera, the human body undergoes a metamorphosis, becoming both landscape and building, part of an architectonic design in which the erotics of the body spread beyond the body itself to influence the design of the film or televisual shot. The body becomes the mise-en-scène of contemporary moving imagery. Opening The Space of Sex, Shelton Waldrep sets up some important tropes for the book: the movement between high and low art; the emphasis on the body, looking, and framing; the general intermedial and interdisciplinary methodology of the book as a whole.
The Space of Sex's second half focuses on how sex, gender, and sexuality are represented in several recent films, including Paul Schrader's The Canyons (2013), Oliver Stone's Savages (2012), Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike (2012), Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac (2013), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Don Jon (2013). Each of these mainstream or independent movies, and several more, are examined for the ways they have attempted to absorb pornography, if not the pornography industry specifically, into their plot. According to Waldrep, the utopian elements of seventies porn get reprocessed in a complex way in the twenty-first century as both a utopian impulse-the desire to have sex on the screen, to re-eroticize sex as something positive and lacking in shame-with a mixed feeling about pornography itself, with an industry that can be seen in a dystopian light. In other words, sex, in our contemporary world, still does not come without compromise. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781501333057Contents: Introduction -- Part One: Topographies of Desire -- 1.Framing the Image: The Female Body in Late Kubrick -- 2.The Spy Who Loved Me: Bond and the Playboy Aesthetic -- Part Two: The Pornographic Imaginary -- 3.Theorizing Pornography -- 4.Body of Art -- Part Three: The Space of Sex in Contemporary Film and Television -- 5.Porn as Form and Content -- 6.Spatializing Desire -- Bibliography -- Index

Ken Shorter as the eponymous Stone is brilliant, while a 19 year-old Rebecca Gilling (Return to Eden) cuts a striking figure as the biker's mole. The soundtrack is a masterpiece of Australian progressive and pub rock. -- Libraries Australia.Notes: DAVID1265; Originally screened in 1974.; Rated R18+Contents: Special features: Stone forever - documentary.; The making of Stone.; Director's slideshow.; Stone make-up test.; Theatrical trailerTechnical Details: PAL ; All regionsCredits: Director: Sandy HarbuttStandard Number: 3000000065198Performer: Ken Shorter, Helen Morse.

Film versions of his plays have had a profound and lasting influence on the movies, beginning with A Streetcar Named Desire in 1961. This is the first book-length study of all the films made from his plays- The Glass Menagerie, The Rose Tattoo and others. Maurice Yacowar deals with them in purely cinematic terms. Each film is considered as a new work in a new medium, not merely as a less than faithful version of a play.
