Several landmark films are covered here in lively examinations of the art of successful cinematic adaptation, covering children's literature from the Victorian age to the present - from Tom Brown's Schooldays to A Hero Ain't Nothing but a Sandwich [...] This is the first book to devote itself exclusively to film adaptations of children's classics. All the writers are equally at home in children's fiction and film studies. Their essays, with one exception, were especially prepared for this volume. All together, a rewarding look at old and new favourites in literature and the movies, and at the elements that have made them lastingly successful." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Filmography: p. 253-273; Bibliography: p. 280-290ISBN: 0804428409 : $14.95; 0804468834 (pbk.) : $6.95LON: 83014816; 2808775

Analyses what makes an acting performance excellent, through a range of examples from world cinema. What actors do on-screen is a fascination for audiences all over the world. Indeed, the cultural visibility of movie stars is so pronounced that stardom has often been regarded as intrinsic to the medium's specificity. Yet not all great cinematic performances are star turns, and so, what really makes a cinematic performance good, interesting, or important has been a neglected topic in film criticism. This two-volume set presents detailed interpretations of singular performances by several of the most compelling actors in cinema history, asking in many different and complementary ways what makes performance meaningful, how it reflects a director's style, as well as how it contributes to the development of national cinemas and cultures. Whether noting the precise ways actors shape film narrative, achieve emotional effect, or move toward political subversion, the essays in these books innovate new approaches to studying screen performance as an art form and cultural force"--Page 4 of cover.Notes: Includes bibliographical references and index.ISBN: 9781474417006Contents: Intro -- Acknowledgments -- Close-up: great American performances -- Chapter 1 Ethel Waters in The Member of the Wedding -- Chapter 2 Irene Dunne in The Awful Truth -- Chapter 3 Cary Grant in His Girl Friday -- Chapter 4 Janet Gaynor in Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans -- Chapter 5 Katharine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter -- Chapter 6 Bette Davis in Dangerous -- Chapter 7 James Stewart in Vertigo -- Chapter 8 Carole Lombard in To Be or Not to Be -- Chapter 9 James Mason in Lolita -- Chapter 10 Montgomery Clift in A Place in the Sun -- Chapter 11 Tony Curtis in Sweet Smell of Success.

Lion / by Luke Davies ; based on the book 'A long way home' by Saroo Brierley. UK, AT, US: 2014. Digital clippings file available
Call No: S LIOAuthor: Davies, Luke Place: UK, AT, USPubDate: 2014PhysDes: 109 leaves ; 30 cm.Subject: LION (AT, Garth Davis, 2016) Summary: "In 1986, Saroo was a five-year-old child in India of a poor but happy rural family. On a trip with his brother, Saroo soon finds himself alone and trapped in a moving decommissioned passenger train that takes him to Calcutta, 1500 miles away from home. Now totally lost in an alien urban environment and too young to identify either himself or his home to the authorities, Saroo struggles to survive as a street child until he is sent to an orphanage. Soon, Saroo is selected to be adopted by the Brierley family in Tasmania, where he grows up in a loving, prosperous home. However, for all his material good fortune, Saroo finds himself plagued by his memories of his lost family in his adulthood and tries to search for them even as his guilt drives him to hide this quest from his adoptive parents and his girlfriend. Only when he has an epiphany does he realize not only the answers he needs, but also the steadfast love that he has always had with all his loved ones in both worlds." The films discussed in textual depth transcend literal lost in the bush mythologies, or actual cases of displaced children, to focus on vulnerable children renderedlost through government and institutional practices, and adult/parental characters developmentally arrested by comforting or traumatic childhood memories. The victory/winning fixation governing the USA – diametrically opposed to the lost child motif – is also discussed as a comparative example of the mesmerising nature of the cultural complex. Examining iconic characters and events, such as the Gallipoli Campaign and Trump’s presidency, and films such as The Babadook, Lion, and Predestination, this book scrutinises the way in which a culture talks to itself, about itself. This analysis looks beyond the melancholy traditionally ascribed to the lost child, by arguing that the repetitive and prolific imagery that this theme stimulates, can be positive and inspiring.
The Lost Child Complex in Australian Film is a unique and compelling work which will be highly relevant for academics and students of Jungian and post-Jungian ideas, cultural studies, screen and media studies. It will also appeal to Jungian psychotherapists and analytical psychologists as well as readers with a broader interest in Australian history and politics. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781138939691
