This was never more so than in the 1930s, when Australia produced more comedy feature films than in any other decade before 1970. These films of the 1930s embraced the new technology of sound, made local vaudeville performers into movie stars, offered escape from the Depression and revealed a diverse and international Australia. In these films, Australia moved further from Empire and the bush, forged the Digger legend, responded to cultural diversity and viewed itself as a modern, urban nation. Influenced by Hollywood, Australian comedies of the 1930s adapted international styles to local points of view. Based on research at the National Film and Sound Archive, Lesley Speed's book provides new insight into Australian comedy films of the 1930s and the extraordinary period of social change in which they were produced. How do special effects change our experience of contemporary film? How important is the Internet to the film industry and film fans? CineTech explores these debates and examines the important intersection between film and new media. Providing a comprehensive introduction to the digital practices used in film, this book moves from historical perspectives to up-to-date analysis. Echographies of television : filmed interviews / Jacques Derrida and Bernard Stiegler ; translated by Jennifer Bajorek. Cambridge, UK: Polity Press, [2002].
Call No: 62 WURAuthor: Derrida, Jacques ; Stiegler, Bernard ; Bajorek, Jennifer Source: UKPlace: Cambridge, UKPublisher: Polity PressPubDate: [2002]PhysDes: viii, 174 pages : illustrations ; 24 cmSubject: ADORNO, THEODOR W. ; DERRIDA, JACQUES ; FOUCAULT, MICHEL ; FASSBENDER, MICHAEL ; FASSBINDER, RAINER WERNER ; HERZOG, WERNER ; HITCHCOCK, ALFRED Summary: "In this new book, Jacques Derrida talks with Bernard Stiegler about the effect of teletechnologies on our philosophical and political moment. Improvising before a camera, the two philosophers are confronted by the very technologies they discuss and so are forced to address all the more directly the urgent questions that they raise. What does it mean to speak of the present in a situation of "live" recording? How can we respond, responsibly, to a question when we know that the so-called "natural" conditions of expression, discussion, reflection, and deliberation have been breached?" "As Derrida and Stiegler discuss the role of teletechnologies in modern society, the political implications of Derrida's thought become apparent. Drawing on recent events in Europe, Derrida and Stiegler explore the impact of television and the internet on our understanding of the state, its borders and citizenship. Their discussion examines the relationship between the juridical and the technical, and it shows how new technologies for manipulating and transmitting images have influenced our notions of democracy, history and the body. The book opens with a shorter interview with Derrida on the news media, and closes with a provocative essay by Stiegler on the epistemology of digital photography." "In Echographies of Television, Derrida and Stiegler open up questions that are of key social and political importance. Their book will be of great interest to all those already familiar with Derrida's work, as well as to students and scholars of philosophy, literature, sociology and media studies."--BOOK JACKET.Notes: Includes bibliographical references. - Translation from the French.ISBN: 074562037XContents: Artifactualities / Jacques Derrida -- Echographies of Television / Jacques Derrida and Bernard Stiegler -- 1. Van Dyke, 1938) Summary: "In Hollywood 1938, Catherine Jurca brings to light a tumultuous year of crisis that has been neglected in histories of the studio era. With attendance in decline, negative publicity about stars who were "poison at the box office", and a spate of bad films, industry executives decided that the public was fed up with the movies. Jurca describes their desperate attempt to win back audiences by launching Motion Pictures' Greatest Year, a massive, and unsuccessful, public relations campaign conducted in theaters and newspapers across North America. Drawing on the records of studio personnel, independent exhibitors, movie-goers, and the motion pictures themselves, she analyzes what was wrong - and right - with Hollywood at the end of a heralded decade and how the industry's troubles changed the making and marketing of films in 1938 and beyond." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Formerly CIP; "Fletcher Jones Foundation humanities imprint"; Includes bibliographical references (p. 231-261), index and filmographyISBN: 9780520271807Donation: Donated by Senses of CInema, 2013Contents: -- list of illustrations -- acknowledgments -- Introduction: Hollywood looks at its audience -- The campaign -- Annus horribilis -- Goldwyn's folly -- Such a thing as bad publicity -- The moviegoing habit -- Exhibitors, the movie quiz contest, and a divided industry -- the minds of exhibitors -- The carrot and the stick -- The quiz contest on the ground -- What the contest did for me -- Independents rebel -- The campaign and the press -- The film industry speaks its mind -- Marginal moviegoers -- The gossip columnists -- The dailies have their say -- The films -- "The finest array of productions" -- Ninety-four films -- The death of glamour -- Human films -- The human side of screwball -- You can't take it with you -- Four daughters -- Boys town -- Marie Antoinette -- That's entertainment -- The fourth estate -- Conclusion: motion pictures' worst year -- appendix 1 -- appendix 2 -- notes -- index --

His major thesis is that, on the contrary, film language has a social and economic history, that it evolved in the way it did because of when and where it was constructed - in the capitalist and imperialist west between 1892 and 1929. The book examines the chronology of the emergence of what it defines as cinema's Institutional Mode of Representation and the socio-historical circumstances in which this took place. It examines the principles of visualisation - camera placement and movement, lighting, editing, mise-en-scene - that film-makers and audiences came to internalize over the first three decades. Special emphasis is laid on the all-important change that occurred in the imaginary placing of the spectator, from a position of exteriority to the film image, implicit in both film-form and viewing conditions during the primitive era (pre-1909), to the imaginary centering of the spectator-subject, completed only with the generalisation of lip-synch sound after 1929. It is the contention of this book that this imaginary centering of a sensorily isolated spectator is the keystone of the cinematic illustion of reality, still achieved today by the same means as it was sixty years ago." - taken from back coverNotes: Revised versions of papers written 1976-1981, some of which have appeared in English and French magazines -- Includes bibliographical references (p. 274-283) and index -- Filmography: p. 284-305.ISBN: 0520071441Contents: Introduction -- Charles Baudelaire versus Doctor Frankenstein -- Life to Those Shadows -- The Wrong Side of the Tracks -- Those Gentlemen of the Lantern and the Parade -- Business is Business: An Invisible Audience -- Passions and Chases-A Certain Linearisation -- Building a Haptic Space -- A Primitive Mode of Representation? -- The Motionless Voyage: Constitution of The Ubiquitous Subject -- Beyond the Peephole, the Logos -- Narrative, Diegesis: Thresholds, Limits -- Conclusion -- Bibliography -- Filmography -- Index

Starting with some of the finest European films produced since World War II, they investigate the literary source of each. But their emphasis is on film, and their writing challenges the conventional assumption that a great book must inevitably make an inferior movie. It is the editors' premise that adaptation, especially in the hands of a gifted director, can be a lively and creative art. The essays offer a fresh perspective on both films and their directors - among them Antonioni, Bertolucci, Bunuel, Fassbinder, Godard, Ophuls, Truffaut. The genesis of films such as Blow-Up, The Conformist, and Jules et Jim is explored often frame-by-frame, for a fuller understanding of the creative process of filmmaking." - BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Bibliography: p. Often considered an offshoot of the gangster film, the prison film precedes the gangster film and is in many ways its opposite. Rather than focusing on tragic figures heading for a fall, the prison film focuses on fallen characters seeking redemption. The gangster's perverse pursuit of the American dream is irrelevant to the prisoner for whom that dream has already failed. At their core, prison films are about self-preservation at the hands of oppressive authority. Like history itself, prison films display long stretches of idleness punctuated by eruptions of violence, dangerous moments that signify liberation and the potential for change. The enclosed world of the prison is a highly effective microcosm, one that forces characters and audiences alike to confront vexing issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality. These portrayals of men and women behind bars have thrived because they deal with such fundamental human themes as freedom, individuality, power, justice, and mercy. -- publisher's web siteNotes: Acknowledgements -- Introduction: After the Crime is Over -- 1. The two Frank Thrings / by Peter Fitzpatrick Clayton, Vic: Monash University Publishing, c2012.
Call No: 81THR FITAuthor: Fitzpatrick, Peter Source: ATPlace: Clayton, VicPublisher: Monash University PublishingPubDate: c2012PhysDes: ix, 564 p. : ill., ports. ; 25 cmSubject: AUSTRALIA ; ACTORS. AUSTRALIA ; EFFTEE STUDIO ; THRING, FRANK ; THRING, F.W. [Francis William, 1883-1936] Summary: "They shared a name, of course, and their physical resemblance was startling. And both Frank Thrings were huge figures in the landscape of twentieth-century Australian theatre and film. But in many ways they could hardly have been more different. Frank Thring the father (1882-1936) began his career as a sideshow conjuror, and he wheeled, dealed and occasionally married his way into becoming the legendary 'F.T' - impresario, speculator and owner of Efftee Films, Australia's first 'talkies' studio. He built for himself an image of grand patriarchal respectability, a sizeable fortune, and all the makings of a dynasty. Frank Thring the son (1926-1994) squandered the fortune and derailed the dynasty in the course of creating his own persona - a unique presence that could make most stages and foyers seem small. He won fame playing tyrants in togas in Hollywood blockbusters, then, suddenly, came home to Melbourne to play perhaps his finest role - that of Frank Thring, actor and personality extraordinaire. Central to this role was that Frank the son was unapologetically and outrageously gay.
Peter Fitzpatrick's compelling dual biography tells the story of two remarkable characters. It's a kind of detective story, following the tracks of two men who did all they could to cover their tracks, and to conceal 'the self' : Frank the father used secrecy and sleight-of-hand as strategies for self-protection; Frank the son masked a thoroughly reclusive personality with flamboyant self-parody. It's also the tale of a lost relationship - and of the power a father may have had, even over a son who hardly knew him." -- BOOK JACKETNotes: Includes index; Includes bibliographical references and index; Also available onlineISBN: 9781921867248Contents: -- acknowledgments -- author's note -- part one: Frank the father -- this man's father -- the great dexter -- the operator -- the general manager -- the speculator -- the impresario -- the legacy -- part two: Frank the son -- the succession -- he that plays the Thring -- these foolish Thrings -- return of the prodigal -- Frankly Thring -- a Thring of shreds and patches -- my father's son -- Efftee Filmography -- Index --
