After dark New York : Danad Pub. Co: Call No: held v.12 no.1-v.13 no.7 May 1979-Nov. 1980 lacks v.12 no.2-6; -- IN STORAGE. OVERNIGHT RETRIEVAL Source: US Place: New York : Danad Pub. Co PhysDes: v. : ill. (some col.) ; 28 cm Subject: ENTERTAINMENT Summary: ‘After Dark’ (1968-1983) was an American showbiz magazine that covered fashion, opera, cabaret, theatre, cinema, and dance, profiling various artists, singers, and actors. It featured many well known celebrities on its covers (including the fabulous #AngelaLansbury in January 1980 -swipe to see)
Although not officially described as a "gay magazine", After Dark regularly covered topics of interest to the gay community. First published in May 1968, the magazine succeeded Ballroom Dance Magazine (1960-1968). In the late 1970s Patrick Pacheco took over as chief editor from William Como hoping to make the magazine a more serious critical monthly, with a greater emphasis on quality writing, detailed reviews and critiques of current events, and performances. The magazine began a slow decline in the late '70s and in 1981 Louis Miele replaced Pacheco anticipating that amplified visuals and a full-color format with "plenty of skin on show" would prove successful.
Topless male coverstars were a common occurrence, and many of the female cover stars pictured were gay icons, such as Liza Minelli and Bette Midler. Despite the new format sales remained low and in 1983 After Dark folded. The AFI Research Collection holds incomplete copies from 1969- 1980. -- AFIRC Notes: Description based on: Vol. 12, no.1 (May 1979); "National magazine of entertainment"--Cover LON: abn97047748; 13026359

The American comic book industry and Hollywood / Alisa Perren and Gregory Steirer London: bfi Publishing, Call No: 753.5 PER Author: Perren, Alisa; Steirer, Gregory Edition: 2021 Place: London Publisher: bfi Publishing PhysDes: 250 pages ; 24 cm Subject: COMIC STRIPS AND THE CINEMA; COMIC STRIPS; COMIC STRIP CHARACTERS IN FILMS; SUPERHEROES IN FILMS; MARVEL; MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT; SUPERMAN IN FILMS Summary: The American Comic Book Industry and Hollywood traces the evolving relationship between the American comic book industry and Hollywood from the launch of X-Men, Spider-Man, and Smallville in the early 2000s through the ascent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Arrowverse, and the Walking Dead Universe in the 2010s.
Perren and Steirer illustrate how the American comic book industry simultaneously has functioned throughout the first two decades of the twenty-first century as a relatively self-contained business characterized by its own organizational structures, business models, managerial discourses, production cultures, and professional identities even as it has remained dependent on Hollywood for revenue from IP licensing. The authors' expansive view of the industry includes not only a discussion of the “Big Two,” Marvel/Disney and DC Comics/Time Warner, but also a survey of the larger comics ecosystem. Other key industry players, including independent publishers BOOM! Studios, IDW, and Image, digital distributor ComiXology, and management-production company Circle of Confusion, all receive attention. Drawing from interviews, fieldwork, archival research, and trade analysis, The American Comic Book Industry and Hollywood provides a road map to understanding the operations of the comic book industry while also offering new models for undertaking trans- and inter-industrial analysis. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9781844579419 Contents: Introduction: The More Things Change…: The American Comic Book Industry and Hollywood in the Twenty-First Century -- 1 Comics Pros Go to Hollywood: The Historical Evolution of the Comics-Hollywood Relationship -- 2 Comic Books and the Economics of Intellectual Property Production -- 3 Drawing Lines: The Place of Comic Book Artists and Writers in Hollywood -- 4 Synergy in Theory and in Practice: Comic Books and the Contemporary Media Conglomerate -- 5 Organizational (Dis-)Integration: Publisher-Hollywood Relationships in the Twenty-First Century -- 6 From Dental Floss to Dental Tape: The Strange Case of Digital Comics -- Distribution -- Afterword: Days of Future Present: The View from 2020

Avengers Assemble! is a vibrant and theoretically informed interrogation of one of the defining and most financially successful film franchises of the new millennium. In the first single-authored monograph on the topic of the Marvel cinematic universe, this book asks, "Why has the superhero genre reemerged so emphatically in recent years?" In an age where people have stopped going to the cinema as frequently as they used to, they returned to it in droves for the superhero film. What is it about these films that has resonated with audiences all around the globe? Are they just disposable pop culture artifacts or might they have something interesting to say about the fears and anxieties of the world we live in today? Beginning with Iron Man in 2008, this study provocatively explores both the cinematic and the televisual branches of the series across ten dynamic and original chapters from a diverse range of critical perspectives which analyse their status as an embodiment of the changing industrial practices of the blockbuster film and their symbolic potency as affective cultural artifacts that are profoundly immersed in the turbulent political climate of the era in which they were made." -- BOOK BACK COVER Notes: Formerly CIP; Includes bibliographical references and index; Also issued online ISBN: 9780231186254 Donation: Senses of Cinema Contents: 1. The big picture : The fight for the future of movies / Ben Fritz Boston: Eamon Dolan Book/ Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2018. Call No: 210.31(73) FRI Author: Fritz, Ben Source: US Place: Boston Publisher: Eamon Dolan Book/ Houghton Mifflin Harcourt PubDate: 2018 PhysDes: xxv, 278 pages ; 24 cm. Subject: SONY CORPORATION; MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT; AMAZON; NETFLIX; IMAX; WALT DISNEY PRODUCTIONS; BUENA VISTA INTERNATIONAL; WARNER BROS.; FRANCHISES; STAR WARS [...] (US, 1977-2015) Summary: "The stunning metamorphosis of twenty-first-century Hollywood and what lies ahead for the art and commerce of film. In the past decade, Hollywood has endured a cataclysm on a par with the end of silent film and the demise of the studio system. Stars and directors have seen their power dwindle, while writers and producers lift their best techniques from TV, comic books, and the toy biz. The future of Hollywood is being written by powerful corporate brands like Marvel, Amazon, Netflix, and Lego, as well as censors in China. Ben Fritz chronicles this dramatic shakeup with unmatched skill, bringing equal fluency to both the financial and entertainment aspects of Hollywood. He dives deeply into the fruits of the Sony hack to show how the previous model, long a creative and commercial success, lost its way. And he looks ahead through interviews with dozens of key players at Disney, Marvel, Netflix, Amazon, IMAX, and others to discover how they have reinvented the business. He shows us, for instance, how Marvel replaced stars with "universes," and how Disney remade itself in Apple's image and reaped enormous profits. But despite the destruction of the studios' traditional playbook, Fritz argues that these seismic shifts signal the dawn of a new heyday for film. The Big Picture shows the first glimmers of this new golden age through the eyes of the creative mavericks who are defining what our movies will look like in the new era." -- Book jacket. Black Panther : 21st century film essentials / Scott Bukatman Austin: University of Texas Press, 2022. Call No: 79 BLA BUK Author: Bukatman, Scott Edition: 2022 Place: Austin Publisher: University of Texas Press PubDate: 2022 PhysDes: 222 pages Subject: BLACK PANTHER (US, Ryan Coogler, 2018); BOSEMAN, CHADWICK; FRUITVALE STATION (US, Ryan Coogler, 2013); MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT; SUPERHEROES IN FILMS; RACIAL ISSUES AND THE CINEMA Summary: Black Panther was the first Black superhero in mainstream American comics. Black Panther was a cultural phenomenon that broke box office records. Yet it wasn’t just a movie led by and starring Black artists. It grappled with ideas and conflicts central to Black life in America and helped redress the racial dynamics of the Hollywood blockbuster.
Scott Bukatman, one of the foremost scholars of superheroes and cinematic spectacle, brings his impeccable pedigree to this lively and accessible study, finding in the utopianism of Black Panther a way of re-envisioning what a superhero movie can and should be while centering the Black creators, performers, and issues behind it. He considers the superheroic Black body; the Pan-African fantasy, feminism, and Afrofuturism of Wakanda; the African American relationship to Africa; the political influence of director Ryan Coogler’s earlier movies; and the entwined performances of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa and Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger. Bukatman argues that Black Panther is escapism of the best kind, offering a fantasy of liberation and social justice while demonstrating the power of popular culture to articulate ideals and raise vital questions. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9781477325353 Contents: Preface -- Introduction: Tell Me a Story -- The Road to Wakanda -- Black Panther’s Black Body -- The Wakandan Dream -- The Killmonger Problem -- Conclusion: Why Do We Hide? -- -- Appreciations -- Notes -- Index

Canvas Documentaries : panoramic entertainments in nineteenth-century Australia and New Zealand / by Mimi Colligan Carlton South, Vic.: Melbourne University Press, 2002. Call No: 761(931/94)(097.1) COL Author: Colligan, Mimi Source: AT Place: Carlton South, Vic. Publisher: Melbourne University Press PubDate: 2002 PhysDes: xvi, 250 p. : ill. (some col.), ports, plans ; 22 cm x 28 cm Subject: ART AND THE CINEMA; DOCUMENTARIES; PRE-CINEMA HISTORY; AUSTRALIA; NEW ZEALAND; ENTERTAINMENT. AUSTRALIA Summary: "Long before cinema was invented, people went to picture shows. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Britain, Europe and America they were treated to dramatic pictorial spectacles. Audiences might be encircled by vast 360-degree canvases, or seated before continuous images drawn across a proscenium, or gathered in amusement parks to watch painted 3-D structures come 'alive' with the explosion of fireworks overhead. The sense of realism was enhanced by back-lighting, running commentaries and props such as real sand and trees. These spectacular representations of scenery, current events or recent battles abroad were indeed documentaries on canvas-the first travelogues. The phenomenon of complex circular panoramas and dioramas took root in Australia and New Zealand in the 1850s. They drew enthusiastic crowds, brought good work for local artists, and propogated the glories of empire in all the capital cities they toured. Canvas Documentaries captures the artistic, civic and social preoccupations of the times. Generously illustrated with paintings, etchings, engravings, mechanical drawings, architectural plans, photographs and advertising material, this beautiful book is a window on the vibrant popular culture of the Victorian era. Cinema and the wealth of nations : media, capital, and the liberal world system / Lee Grievson Oakland, California: University of California Press, Call No: 203(73) GRI Author: Grievson, Lee Edition: 2018 Place: Oakland, California Publisher: University of California Press PhysDes: xvi, 466 pages : illustrated ; 24cm Subject: ECONOMICS AND THE CINEMA. US; NATIONAL CULTURE AND THE CINEMA. USA; CAPITALISM AND THE CINEMA; FINANCING. USA; INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION. USA Summary: Cinema and the Wealth of Nations explores how media, principally in the form of cinema, was used during the interwar years by elite institutions to establish and sustain forms of liberal political economy beneficial to their interests. It examines the media produced by institutions such as states, corporations, and investment banks, as well as the emergence of a corporate media industry and system supported by state policy and integral to the establishment of a new consumer system. Lee Grieveson shows how media was used to encode liberal political and economic power during the period that saw the United States eclipse Britain as the globally hegemonic nation and the related inauguration of new forms of liberal economic globalization. But this is not a distant history. Cinema and the Wealth of Nations examines a foundational conjuncture in the establishment of media forms and a media system instrumental in, and structural to, the emergence and expansion of a world system that has been—and continues to be—brutally violent, unequal, and destructive. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9780520291690 Contents: List of Illustrations -- Acknowledgments -- -- 1. Cinema in a small state : distribution and exhibition in Adelaide at the coming of sound in Studies in Australasian cinema (2007) vol.1 iss.3 p.299-313 Author: Walsh, Mike PhysDes: Article Subject: DISTRIBUTION. AUSTRALIA; EXHIBITION. AUSTRALIA; HISTORY OF CINEMA. TRANSITION SILENT-SOUND; HISTORY OF EXHIBITION. AUSTRALIA Summary: Most histores of Australian cinema have foregrounded film production but have little to say about film distribution and exhibition, which were more powerful sectors of the cinema industry in Australia. This study examines the distribution and exhibition of films in Adelaide's central business district and suburban circuits during the introduction of sound in 1928-29. In addition to analysing the impact of the new technology, this article looks at the way that film distribution in this period changed in response to a number of other factors including the switch to direct distribution, the rise of British production and the local politics of first-run exhibition competition. The article examines the structure of the city and suburban exhibition in Adelaide and demonstrates that any analysis of the industry's response to sound technologies must take into account intensely local factors in order to explain the ways that different compaines adopted varying industrial tactics during the diffusion of this new technology. -- Abstract

Cinema in the digital age / Rombes, Nicholas New York: New York Columbia University Press, 2017. Call No: 62 ROM Author: Rombes, Nicholas Edition: Revised edition Place: London; New York Publisher: New York Columbia University Press PubDate: 2017 PhysDes: 22 b& w illustrations Subject: DIGITAL CINEMA; NOSTALGIA; FILMMAKING; DISTRIBUTION; DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION; MEDIA AND THE CINEMA; EDITING; PHILOSOPHY AND THE CINEMA; VIDEO FORMATS; PARANORMAL ACTIVITY : THE MARKED ONES ( US, Christopher Landon, 2014); THEORY; SPECTATORSHIP; BLUE VELVET (US, David Lynch, 1986); APPLE; COMPUTER GENERATED IMAGERY; POSTMODERNISM AND THE CINEMA; FORMATS; CINEMATOGRAPHY Summary: Have digital technologies transformed cinema into a new art, or do they simply replicate and mimic analogue, film-based cinema? Newly revised and expanded to take the latest developments into account, Cinema in the Digital Age examines the fate of cinema in the wake of the digital revolution. Nicholas Rombes considers Festen (1998), The Blair Witch Project (1999), Timecode (2000), Russian Ark (2002), and The Ring (2002), among others. Haunted by their analogue pasts, these films are interested not in digital purity but rather in imperfection and mistakes-blurry or pixilated images, shaky camera work, and other elements that remind viewers of the human behind the camera. With a new introduction and new material, this updated edition takes a fresh look at the historical and contemporary state of digital cinema. It pays special attention to the ways in which nostalgia for the look and feel of analogue disrupts the aesthetics of the digital image, as well as how recent films such as The Social Network (2010) and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)-both shot digitally-have disguised and erased their digital foundations. The book also explores new possibilities for writing about and theorizing film, such as randomization. Notes: Includes bibliographical references. The comic book film adaptation : exploring modern Hollywood's leading genre / by Liam Burke Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, c2015. Call No: 753.5 BUR Author: Burke, Liam Source: US Place: Jackson Publisher: University Press of Mississippi PubDate: c2015 PhysDes: viii, 372 pages ; 24 cm Subject: ADAPTATIONS; MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT; CARTOONS; COMIC STRIPS AND THE CINEMA; COMIC STRIP CHARACTERS IN FILMS; COMIC STRIPS Summary: "In the summer of 2000 X-Men surpassed all box office expectations and ushered in an era of unprecedented production of comic book film adaptations. This trend, now in its second decade, has blossomed into Hollywood's leading genre. From superheroes to Spartan warriors, The Comic Book Film Adaptation offers the first dedicated study to examine how comic books moved from the fringes of popular culture to the center of mainstream film production. Through in-depth analysis, industry interviews, and audience research, this book charts the cause-and-effect of this influential trend. It considers the cultural traumas, business demands, and digital possibilities that Hollywood faced at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The industry managed to meet these challenges by exploiting comics and their existing audiences. However, studios were caught off-guard when these comic book fans, empowered by digital media, began to influence the success of these adaptations. Nonetheless, filmmakers soon developed strategies to take advantage of this intense fanbase, while codifying the trend into a more lucrative genre, the comic book movie, which appealed to an even wider audience. Central to this vibrant trend is a comic aesthetic in which filmmakers utilize digital filmmaking technologies to engage with the language and conventions of comics like never before. The Comic Book Film Adaptation explores this unique moment in which cinema is stimulated, challenged, and enriched by the once-dismissed medium of comics" -- LIBRARIES AUSTRALIA Notes: Includes bibliographical references and index ISBN: 9781628462036 Contents: -- acknowledgments -- introduction -- The Golden Age of Comic Book Filmmaking -- The Comic Book Movie Genre -- Fans, Fidelity, and the Grammar of Value -- A Comic Aesthetic -- How to Adapt Comics the Marvel Way -- the future of the comic book movie -- North American box-office totals for comic book film adaptations -- notes -- works cited -- index --

AUSTRALIA Summary: New digital techologies allow the creation of new forms of content, including games, websites, mobile and interactive stories. Digital disruption : Cinema moves on-line / Edited by Dina Iordanova and Stuart Cunningham St Andrews, Scotland: St Andrews Film Studies, 2012. Call No: 301(-5) IOR Edition: 2012 Place: St Andrews, Scotland Publisher: St Andrews Film Studies PubDate: 2012 PhysDes: viii, 223 p. ; 23 cm Subject: DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION; INTERNET AND THE CINEMA; DISTRIBUTION; COPYRIGHT; YOUTUBE Summary: ‘Nobody knows anything’, said William Goldman of studio filmmaking. The rule is ever more apt as we survey the radical changes that digital distribution, along with the digitisation of production and exhibition, is wreaking on global film circulation.
Digital Disruption: Cinema Moves On-line helps to make sense of what has happened in the short but turbulent history of on-line distribution. It provides a realistic assessment of the genuine and not-so-promising methods that have been tried to address the disruptions that moving from ‘analogue dollars’ to ‘digital cents’ has provoked in the film industry. Paying close attention to how the Majors have dealt with the challenges – often unsuccessfully – it focuses as much attention on innovations and practices outside the mainstream. Throughout, it is alive to, and showcases, important entrepreneurial innovations such as Mubi, Jaman, Withoutabox and IMDb.
Written by leading academic commentators that have followed the fortunes of world cinema closely and passionately, as well as experienced hands close to the fluctuating fortunes of the industry, Digital Disruption: Cinema Moves On-line is an indispensable guide to great changes in film and its audiences. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9780956373076 Donation: donated by Senses of Cinema, 2014 Contents: Digital Disruption: Technological Innovation and Global Film Circulation / Dina Iordanova -- On-line Film Distribution: Its History and Global Complexion / Stuart Cunningham and Jon Silver -- Digital Revolution: Active Audiences and Fragmented Consumption / Michael Gubbins -- Internet-enabled Dissemination: Managing Uncertainty in the Film Value Chain / Michael Franklin -- Convergence, Digitisation and the Future of Film Festivals / Marijke De Valck -- Mission Unreachable: How Jaman Is Shaping the Future of On-line Distribution / Jon Silver, Stuart Cunningham, Mark David Ryan -- ‘IMDb Helps Me Sleep at Night’: How a Simple Database Changed the World of Film / Alex Fischer -- ‘The Fully Clickable Submission’: How Withoutabox Captured the Hearts and Minds of Film Festivals Everywhere / Alex Fischer -- Spotlight on MUBI: Two Interviews with Efe Cakarel, Founder and CEO of MUBI / Paul Fileri and Ruby Cheung -- ‘What Do You Do with What You See?’: Patterns and Uses of Cinéphilia, Then and Now / Ben Slater -- Appendix 1: Timeline – On-line Distribution of Feature Films / Stuart Cunningham and Jon Silver -- Appendix 2: A Selection of / Mostly Legal) VOD and On-line Content Providers / Stuart Cunningham and Jon Silver -- Appendix 3: Comparative Internet Rankings: 40 International On-line Movies-on-demand Sites / Stuart Cunningham and Jon Silver -- Appendix 4: Comparative Deal Terms in 2009 / Stuart Cunningham and Jon Silver -- Appendix 5: Related Websites / Alexander Marlow-Mann

While DVD sales are not at the expense of the cinema box office, cinema marketing is a great promotional tool.; -- "But research that Columbia TriStar conducts through the DVD Usergroup website (which is funded with 4 per cent of Columbia TriStar's marketing budget) draws an interesting portrait of the average DVD user. Most people who whave bought the 5700 titles now available did not see the movie during its cinema release. And few buy them as gifts. And in contrast to video rentals, which are often group decisions, the DVD purchase is a solo affair."

Fans homing in on cheap DVDs in Sunday Times (07/03/2004) p.27 Call No: DVD RESEARCH FOLDER; DVD RESEARCH FOLDER Author: Royall, Ian Subject: DISTRIBUTION. DVD. AUSTRALIA; HOME VIDEO MARKETING; AUSTRALIAN VISUAL SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTORS ASSOCIATION; BUSH, SIMON Summary: The slashing of DVD prices fuels high sales of the product. The article looks at the shortening of cinema to DVD sales release and why DVD is a popular format. Good article! Notes: -- accessed from: Factiva. Dow Jones Reuters Business Interactive LLC. RMIT University Library. (14 May 2007). Quotations: -- "Big chains such as Big W, Kmart and Target are driving prices on DVDs and CDs down to bare margins to lure customers. Full retail price for a new movie is usually more than $40, but the chains are marking them down to about $27, while the same titles sell in specialist retailers for $36 to $40."; -- ""Studios are making decisions now as to whether to fund movies, based on follow-through sales to DVD and video" Mr Bush said."; -- "Distributors also have shortened the time between cinema release and DVD release. Initially it was to beat piracy, but the extra incentive is to get the movie out while it's still fresh in the public's mind. A few years ago, the gap between cinema and DVD release was as much as 18 months. Now, it can be as brief as three months, depending on the studio and the type of movie."

Could piracy actually be good for the film business? Why are the revolutionary technologies used in the making of The Hobbit not mentioned in some adverts? Exploring these questions and many more, Film Marketing into the Twenty-First Century draws on insights from renowned film scholars and leading industry professionals to chart the evolution of modern film marketing.
The first part of the book focuses on geographical considerations, showing how marketers have to adapt their strategies locally as films travel across borders. The second covers new marketing possibilities offered by the Internet, as Vine, Facebook and other participative websites open new venues for big distributors and independents alike. Hollywood in Havana : US cnema and revolutionary nationalism in Cuba before 1959 / Megan Feeney Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2019. Call No: 302(73:729.1) Author: Feeney, Megan Source: US Place: Chicago Publisher: The University of Chicago Press PubDate: 2019 PhysDes: viii, 320 pages: black and white illustrations; 23 cm. Subject: CUBA; CHAPLIN, CHARLES; CAPRA, FRANK; DISTRIBUTION; EXHIBITION; FILM NOIR; KAZAN, ELIA; Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer; PARAMOUNT STUDIOS; WARNER BROS.; GREAT DICTATOR, THE (US, Charles Chaplin, 1940); VIVA ZAPATA (US, Elia Kazan, 1952); TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, THE (US, John Huston, 1948); [MISTER] MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (US, Frank Capra, 1939); FACE IN THE CROWD, A (US, Elia Kazan, 1957) Summary: "From the turn of the twentieth century through the late 1950s, Havana was a locus for American movie stars, with glamorous visitors including Errol Flynn, John Wayne, and Marlon Brando. In fact, Hollywood was seemingly everywhere in pre-Castro Havana, with movie theaters three to a block in places, widely circulated silver screen fanzines, and terms like “cowboy” and “gangster” entering Cuban vernacular speech. Hollywood in Havana uses this historical backdrop as the catalyst for a startling question: Did exposure to half a century of Hollywood pave the way for the Cuban Revolution of 1959?
Megan Feeney argues that the freedom fighting extolled in American World War II dramas and the rebellious values and behaviors seen in postwar film noir helped condition Cuban audiences to expect and even demand purer forms of Cuban democracy and national sovereignty. At the same time, influential Cuban intellectuals worked to translate Hollywood ethics into revolutionary rhetoric—which, ironically, led to pointed critiques and subversions of the US presence in Cuba. Hollywood in Havana not only expands our notions of how American cinema was internalized around the world—it also broadens our view of the ongoing history of US-Cuban interactions, both cultural and political." -- Back cover. Notes: Includes bibliographical references and index. ISBN: 9780226593692 Contents: Introduction. Looking up: Hollywood and revolutionary Cuban nationalism -- The film business that unites: early US cinema in Havana, 1897-1928 -- Teaching eyes to see: the advent of Cuban film criticism, 1928-1934 -- Our men in Havana: Hollywood and good neighborly bonds, 1934-1941 -- You are men! fight for liberty! More than 'making do' : rethinking cinema attendance in regional and rural Australia in Studies in Australasian cinema (2011) vol.5 iss.1 p.7-17 Author: Aveyard, Karina PhysDes: Article Subject: AUDIENCES. AUSTRALIA; EXHIBITION. AUSTRALIA; DISTRIBUTION. AUSTRALIA Summary: Cinema is one of the most popular forms of cultural entertainment in contemporary rural Australia, yet very little is understood about film circulation, presentation and consumption in non-metropolitan locations. Despite a growing interest in the situation of rural cinema by film historians, scholars have been slow to engage with the detail and meaning of its more recent past. The preoccupation with the connections between cinema and contemporary modernity have tended to over-estimate the significance of the metropolitan and to obscure the diversity and richness of cinema-going practice in Australia. Drawing on analysis of national box office data and material from a microstudy conducted in the rural town of Merimbula on the far south coast of New South Wales, this article seeks to contribute to addressing this gap. It considers three key questions — Who is watching films at the cinema in rural Australia? Why are they watching? And what do these acts of consumption mean? -- Abstract

Netflix nation : the geography of digital distribution / Ramon Lobato New York: New York University Press, Call No: 386.5-5 LOB Author: Lobato, Ramon Edition: 2019 Place: New York Publisher: New York University Press PhysDes: xii, 236 pages : illustrated ; 21 cm Series: Critical Cultural Communication Subject: NETFLIX; VIDEO ON DEMAND; DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION Summary: Television, once a broadcast medium, now also travels through our telephone lines, fiber optic cables, and wireless networks. It is delivered to viewers via apps, screens large and small, and media players of all kinds. In this unfamiliar environment, new global giants of television distribution are emerging—including Netflix, the world’s largest subscription video-on-demand service.
Combining media industry analysis with cultural theory, Ramon Lobato explores the political and policy tensions at the heart of the digital distribution revolution, tracing their longer history through our evolving understanding of media globalization. Netflix Nations considers the ways that subscription video-on-demand services, but most of all Netflix, have irrevocably changed the circulation of media content. It tells the story of how a global video portal interacts with national audiences, markets, and institutions, and what this means for how we understand global media in the internet age.
Netflix Nations addresses a fundamental tension in the digital media landscape – the clash between the internet’s capacity for global distribution and the territorial nature of media trade, taste, and regulation. The book also explores the failures and frictions of video-on-demand as experienced by audiences. The actual experience of using video platforms is full of subtle reminders of market boundaries and exclusions: platforms are geo-blocked for out-of-region users (“this video is not available in your region”); catalogs shrink and expand from country to country; prices appear in different currencies; and subtitles and captions are not available in local languages. These conditions offer rich insight for understanding the actual geographies of digital media distribution.
Contrary to popular belief, the story of Netflix is not just an American one. From Argentina to Australia, Netflix’s ascension from a Silicon Valley start-up to an international television service has transformed media consumption on a global scale. Netflix Nations will help readers make sense of a complex, ever-shifting streaming media environment. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9781479804948

Outward-looking Australian cinema in Studies in Australasian cinema (2010) vol.4 iss.3 p.199-214 Author: Goldsmith, Ben PhysDes: Article Subject: INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA; PRODUCTION DEALS. AUSTRALIA; DISTRIBUTION. AUSTRALIA; NATIONAL CULTURE AND THE CINEMA. AUSTRALIA Summary: The writer examines how dynamic and shifting relations between the local/national and the international have transformed the ways in which people think about what constitutes Australian cinema. Noting that over the last 20 years or so, Australian cinema's international relations in production and policy have expanded and become more complex, while those with Hollywood have been transformed, he illustrates how relations of commonality and continuity with the international called up in the new arrangements challenge the dominant articulation in policy of difference from other kinds of filmmaking as the basis of Australian cinema. -- Provided by publisher

The politics of digital distribution : exclusionary structures in online cinema in Studies in Australasian cinema (2009) vol.3 iss.2 p.167-178 Author: Lobato, Ramon PhysDes: Article Subject: INTERNET AND THE CINEMA. AUSTRALIA; INTERNET AND THE CINEMA; DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION; DISTRIBUTION. AUSTRALIA Summary: The hype around digital film distribution is now at fiver pitch, with promises of a brave new world of instant delivery, unfettered consumer choice and new revenue streams for film-makers. Surveying the current array of commercial online video-on-demand (VOD) services, this article offers some critical reflections on these emerging circulatory models. The focus is on power relations within the online VOI industry and on issues of audience access and equity. The article argues that distribution should be a key concern for contemporary film researchers, given the power of distributors to determine the range of films available to viewers and the conditions under which they are accessible. While the ‘democratizing’ potential of online distribution may be appealing, it is important to recognize that digital delivery infrastructures may not result in any real diversification of film culture, that much of the Australian audience will be excluded from their reach and that the vast majority of online film consumption will continue to take place in the extralegal realm. -- Abstract Notes: Part of a special issue on digital cinema in Australia and New Zealand

AUSTRALIA Summary: "The workshop, whose edited proceedings are reprinted in this volume, was prompted by convenient accidents of place and time. Early in 2009, a mature-age student with a background in journalism asked me the rhetorical question: why was Australian cinema in decline? Pressed about the proposition contained in the question, the student pointed out that in the year 2008, only two feature films - Australia and Happy Feet - appeared to have a noticeable presence at the theatrical box office. In what has become an average figure for annual Australian production output, some 22 feature films had been released that year but only these two films seemed to have any impact so far as their marketing and audience visibility was concerned. But, of course, this view drastically simpifies the situation of what is occurring in Australian film distribution and exhibition and how that is impacting on film production. The fact is that we know little of how these elements currently operate so far as various sectors of the Australian cinema industry are concernerned. This prompted first thoughts about undertaking some form of investgation" -- Introduction Notes: Edited proceedings of a workshop "...sponsored by Griffith University in conjunction with Screen Australia and held at the Griffith University Conservatorium of Music at South Bank in Brisbane." -- Introduction; Includes bibliographical references ISBN: 9781921291708 Contents: -- contributors -- introduction / Albert Moran -- Australia's film and television geography / Tom O'regan -- the plight of the Australian film: traditional distribution and exhibition and the search for alternatives / Cathy Overett -- marketing and the fate of locally produced films in Australian cinemas / Peter Mageros -- the shift to digital cinema disribution and exhibition: implications for the future of Australian films / Trish FitzSimons -- rethinking cinema going in regional and rural Australia / Karina Aveyard -- dvd rental exhibition : running an independent outlet / Andrew Leavold -- community targeted distribution and Cinema Ventures Ltd / Gil Scrine -- Screen Australia and Australian Screen Culture / Susan Ward -- roundtable discussion -- appendix a: workshop program -- appendix b: presentation slides -- Australia's film and television geography / Tom O'Regan -- b2: rethinking cinema going in regional and rural Australia / Karina Aveyard -- b3: Screen Australia and Australian Screen Culture / Susan Ward --

Rethinking distribution : developing the parameters for a micro-analysis of the movement of motion pictures in Studies in Australasian cinema (2007) vol.1 iss.3 p.315-331 Author: Thorne, Ross PhysDes: Article Subject: HISTORY OF CINEMA. AUSTRALIA; DISTRIBUTION. AUSTRALIA; CINEMAS. AUSTRALIA; EXHIBITION. AUSTRALIA Summary: Although there is a plethora of popular and academic literature on ‘cinema’ little, if any, explains the day-to-day management of getting films from the distributor to the cinema, from cinema to cinema, and from cinema back to the distributor. The author's discovery of a cache of historic film-hire documents, normally discarded after a couple of years, has thrown light on this aspect of micro-management of film distribution. From some 3,500 documents for the 1950s decade Ross Thorne has produced a database covering about 80 per cent of the films shown at one small-town cinema in New South Wales. Analysis of the database shows how complex cinema management was and how, up until the coming of television, the railways played a crucial role in the organization of the regional entertainment business. -- Abstract

Rural cinema audiences in South Australia in the 1930s in Studies in Australasian cinema (2007) vol.1 iss.3 p.353-375 Author: Walker, Dylan PhysDes: Article Subject: HISTORY OF EXHIBITION. AUSTRALIA; DISTRIBUTION. AUSTRALIA; AUDIENCES. AUSTRALIA; STATE AND THE CINEMA. AUSTRALIA: SOUTH AUSTRALIA Summary: Very few South Australian local histories give any account of the ritual screening of films in local community halls and regional picture theatres. Given that the 1930s was a turbulent era for the exhibition industry, the survival of the rural picture show beyond the decade suggests that it played a significant role in local history. This article will discuss the distribution and exhibition of films in rural South Australia during the early 1930s and the impact of legislation on the small operators. It goes on to examine the cinema-going preferences of the mid-north town of Snowtown during two years from July 1933 to June 1935 and considers the factors other than taste that determined the popularity of a screening. -- Abstract

Screen traffic : movies, multiplexes, and global culture / by Charles R. Acland London: Duke University Press, 2003. Call No: 410 ACL Author: Acland, Charles R. Source: UK Place: London Publisher: Duke University Press PubDate: 2003 PhysDes: xii, 337 p. : ill. ; 24 cm. Subject: AUDIENCES; AUDIENCE RESEARCH; CINEMAS; DISTRIBUTION Summary: "In Screen Traffic, Charles R. Acland examines how, since the mid-1980s, the U.S commercial movie business has altered conceptions of movie-going both within the industry and among audiences. He shows how studios, in their increasing reliance on revenues from international audiences and from the ancillary markets of television, videotape, dvd, and pay-perview, have cultivated an understanding of their commodoties as mutating global products. Consequently, the cultural practice of moviegoing has changed significantly, as has the place of the cinmea in relation to other sites of leisure. Integrating film and cultural theory with close analysis of promotional materials, entertainment news, trade publications, and economic reports, Acland presents an array of evidence for the new understanding of movies and moviegoing that has developed within popular culture and the entertainment industry. In particular, he dissects a key development: the rise of the megaplex, characterized by large auditoriums, plentiful screens, and consumer activities other than film viewing. He traces its genesis from 1986, with the re-entry of studios into the movie exhibition business, through 1998, when reports of the economic destabilization of exhibition began to surface, just as the rise of so-called e-cinema signaled another wave of change. Documenting the current tendency toward an acclerated cinema culture, one that appears to arrive simultaneously for everyone, everywhere, Screen Traffic unearths and critiques the corporate and cultural forces contributing to the 'felt internationalism' of our global era. Screening Europe in Australasia : transnational silent film before and after the rise of Hollywood / Julie K. Allen Exeter: University of Exeter Press, Call No: 302(94) ALL Author: Allen, Julie K. Edition: 2022 Place: Exeter Publisher: University of Exeter Press PhysDes: xx, 476 pages : illustrated ; 25 cm Series: Exeter studies in film history Subject: DISTRIBUTION. AUSTRALIA; EXHIBITION. AUSTRALIA; DISTRIBUTION. NEW ZEALAND; EXHIBITION. NEW ZEALAND; PATHE; ITALIAN CINEMA; SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRIES; GERMANY; UFA Summary: Through a detailed study of the circulation of European silent film in Australasia in the early twentieth century, this book challenges the historical myopia that treats Hollywood films as having always dominated global film culture.
Before World War I, European silent feature films were ubiquitous in Australia and New Zealand, teaching Antipodean audiences about Continental cultures and familiarizing them with glamorous European stars, from Asta Nielsen to Emil Jannings. After the rise of Hollywood and then the shift to sound film, this history—and its implications for cross-cultural exchange—was lost. Julie K. Allen recovers that history, with its flamboyant participants, transnational currents, innovative genres, and geopolitical complications, bringing it all vividly to life.
Making ground-breaking use of digitized Australian and New Zealand newspapers, the author reconstructs the distribution and exhibition of European silent films in the Antipodes, along the way incorporating compelling biographical sketches of the ambitious pioneers of the Australasian cinema industry. She reveals the complexity and competitiveness of the early cinema market, in a region with high consumer demand and low domestic production, and frames the dramatic shift to almost exclusively American cinema programming during World War I, contextualizing the rise of the art film in the 1920s in competition with mainstream Hollywood productions.
This book’s treatment of the extensive circulation of European silent features and stars in Australasia reveals the vibrant transnationalism of silent film before the rise of Hollywood, and frames the emergence of art house cinema in the 1920s. -- publisher's web site ISBN: 9781905816873 Contents: List of Figures -- Acknowledgments -- Part I: Film Distribution and Exhibition in Australasia before World War I -- 1. Shadow economies of cinema : mapping informal film distribution / Ramon Lobato London: Palgrave macmillan [on behalf of the] bfi, 2012. Call No: 301.76 LOB Author: Lobato, Ramon Source: UK Place: London Publisher: Palgrave macmillan [on behalf of the] bfi PubDate: 2012 PhysDes: viii, 168 p. ; 24 cm Series: Cultural histories of cinema Subject: DISTRIBUTION; PIRACY; DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION; COPYRIGHT; INTERNET Summary: "How do people access movies today?; What are the most popular and powerful channels for media distribution on a global scale?; How are film industries changing in the face of media convergence and digitisation?
To answer questions such as these, argues Ramon Lobato, we must shift our gaze away from the legal film business and toward cinema's shadow economies. All around the world, films are bought from roadside stalls, local markets, and grocery stores; they are illegally downloaded and streamed; they are watched in makeshift video clubs, on street corners, and in restaurants, shops and bars. International film culture in its actually-existing forms is a messy affair; and it relies to a great extent on black and grey media markets. Examining the industrial dynamics of these subterranean film networks across a number of different sites-from Los Angeles to Lagos, Melbourne to Mexico City-this book shows how they constitute a central rather than marginal part of audiovisual culture and commerce.
Combining film industry analysis with cultural theory, Shadow Economies of Cinema opens up a new area of inquiry for cinema studies, putting industry research into dialogue with wider debates about economic informality and commodity circulation. Written in an accessible style, this book offers an original 'bottom-up' perspective on the global cinema industry for researchers and students in film studies, cultural studies, and media and communications."-BOOK BLURB Notes: includes appendix: Film Distribution Research Guide; includes bibliographical references; includes index ISBN: 9781844574117 Contents: Machine generated contents note: Why distribution? -- Formal and informal film economies -- Shadows, sites and circuits -- 1.Distribution from Above and Below -- Redefining distribution: theory and practice -- Distribution from below -- The cultural politics of distribution -- Conclusion -- 2.The Straight-to-video Slaughterhouse -- `Anything with sprocket holes' -- The STV aesthetic -- Transnational STV circuits -- Shooting and selling STV action in the Asia-Pacific -- The slaughterhouse of cinema -- Conclusion -- 3.Informal Media Economies -- The formal and the informal -- The centrality of informality -- Informal economies of cinema -- Informality, cinema and the state -- Between formal and informal distribution: Tropa de elite -- 4.Nollywood at Large -- A short history of the Nigerian video boom -- The formalising imperative -- Formalising international distribution -- Conclusion -- 5.Six Faces of Piracy -- Copyright and the construction of piracy -- Piracy as theft --
