This is the first full-length study of how contemporary entertainment technologies and media - from cable television and VHS to DVD and the Internet - shape our encounters with the movies and affect the aesthetic, cultural, and ideological definitions of cinema. Barbara Klinger explores topics such as home theater, film collecting, classic Hollywood movie reruns, repeat viewings, and Internet film parodies, providing a multifaceted view of the presentation and reception of films in U.S. households. Balancing industry history with theoretical and cultural analysis, she finds that today's cinema's powerful social presence cannot be fully grasped without considering its prolific recycling in post-theatrical venues - especially the home."--BOOK BLURBNotes: Formerly CIP.; Includes bibliographical references (p. 281-287) and indexISBN: 9780520245860Contents: The new media aristocrats: home theater and the film experience -- The contemporary cinephile: film collecting after the VCR -- Remembrance of films past: cable television and classic Hollywood cinema -- Once is not enough: the functions and pleasures of repeat viewings -- To infinity and beyond: the Web short, parody, and remediation -- Conclusion: of fortresses and film cultures

Evening screenings take place in buildings that seek out the attention of passersby using their form and light. The interiors of this less-than-a-century-old building type are also very manifold. The range of design is especially evident in the execution of foyers, which span everything from the strict, modern and refined to the opulent, voluminous and luxurious. Next to classical, individual cinemas, large multiplex centers have appeared in recent years, becoming an integral component of large amusement parks. The current book explores these developments with the help of 60 contemporary buildings from around the worldDonation: donated by Michael Smith

Cinema, community and policy : contexts and pretexts for the Regional Cinema Program in New South Wales, Australia in Studies in Australasian cinema (2007) vol.1 iss.3 p.377-394
Author: Crowe, Karen PhysDes: ArticleSubject: REGIONAL EXHIBITION. AUSTRALIA ; CINEMAS. AUSTRALIA. STATE (NSW) ; AUDIENCES. AUSTRALIA ; STATE AND THE CINEMA. AUSTRALIA. NEW SOUTH WALES Summary: This article examines developments relating to regional cinema-going in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW). It draws on research whose primary case studies comprise four campaigns to revitalize historic cinema spaces in country towns in NSW and the introduction in the late 1990s of a Regional Cinema Program (RCP) designed to promote and support such activity in that state. It examines some of the historic and political contexts that precipitated these projects and the adoption of their concerns by the NSW state government and will consider how claims for the social importance of cinema-going have been reflected and constructed through the practices and discourses of policy-making and place-making. In particular, the essay traces the adoption of regional cinema access as a policy concern of the NSW state government and the aspirations and operations of a ‘community cinema’ in the south-western NSW town of Tumut. In focusing on this case study the article explores the interconnected relationship between trends in social and cultural policy-making, rural revitalization, the social experience of cinema-going and their various roles in the complex and contested construction of a sense of ‘community’. -- Abstract

USA ; FANS Summary: "Too often dismissed as nothing more than 'trash cinema', exploitation films have become both earnestly appreciated cult objects and home video items that are more accessible than ever. In this wide-ranging new study, David Church explores how the history of drive-in theatres and urban grind houses has descended to the home video formats that keep these lurid movies fondly alive today. Arguing for the importance of cultural memory in contemporary fan practices, Church focuses on both the re-release of archival exploitation films on DVD and the recent cycle of 'retrosploitation' films like Grindhouse, Machete, Viva, The Devil's Rejects, and Black Dynamite. At a time when older ideas of subcultural belonging have become increasingly subject to nostalgia, Grindhouse Nostalgia presents an indispensable study of exploitation cinema's continuing allure, and is a bold contribution to our understanding of fandom, taste politics, film distribution, and home video." - TAKEN FROM BACK OF THE BOOKNotes: Includes bibliographical references and indexISBN: 97800748699100Donation: Senses of CinemaContents: Machine generated contents note: 1.A Drive-in Theatre of the Mind: Nostalgic Populism and the Declasse Video Object -- 2.42nd Street Forever? INDIA ; EXHIBITION. INDIA ; MULTIPLEX CINEMAS. INDIA ; SOCIETY AND THE CINEMA. INDIA Summary: During the decade of its existence in India, the multiplex cinema has been very much a sign of the times - both a stmptom of new social values. Indicative of a consistent push to create a 'globalised' consuming middle class and a new urban environment, multiplex theatres have thus become key sites in the long-running struggle over cultural legitimacy and the right to public space in Indian cities.
This book provides the reader with a comprehensive account of the new leisure infrasructure arising at the intersection between contemporary trends in cultural practice and the spational politics that are reshaping the cities of India. Exploring the significance, and convergence, of economic liberalisation, urban redevelopment and the media explosion in India, the book demonstrates an innovative approach towards the cultural and political economy of leisure in a complex and rapidly changing society.Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p.[225]-238) and indexISBN: 9780414533591Contents: 1. But it wasn't just seeing the films that mattered; he also wanted, and and quite soon needed, to be writing about them and these obsessions have been part of his life for the next sixty-odd years. Real and Reel is a light-hearted, ironic acount of a lifetime's addiction. It is one person's story, but it may strike familiar sparks among many others. Rethinking distribution : developing the parameters for a micro-analysis of the movement of motion pictures in Studies in Australasian cinema (2007) vol.1 iss.3 p.315-331
Author: Thorne, Ross PhysDes: ArticleSubject: HISTORY OF CINEMA. AUSTRALIA ; DISTRIBUTION. AUSTRALIA ; CINEMAS. AUSTRALIA ; EXHIBITION. AUSTRALIA Summary: Although there is a plethora of popular and academic literature on ‘cinema’ little, if any, explains the day-to-day management of getting films from the distributor to the cinema, from cinema to cinema, and from cinema back to the distributor. The author's discovery of a cache of historic film-hire documents, normally discarded after a couple of years, has thrown light on this aspect of micro-management of film distribution. From some 3,500 documents for the 1950s decade Ross Thorne has produced a database covering about 80 per cent of the films shown at one small-town cinema in New South Wales. Analysis of the database shows how complex cinema management was and how, up until the coming of television, the railways played a crucial role in the organization of the regional entertainment business. -- Abstract

Screen traffic : movies, multiplexes, and global culture / by Charles R. Acland London: Duke University Press, 2003.
Call No: 410 ACLAuthor: Acland, Charles R. Source: UKPlace: LondonPublisher: Duke University PressPubDate: 2003PhysDes: xii, 337 p. : ill. ; 24 cm.Subject: AUDIENCES ; AUDIENCE RESEARCH ; CINEMAS ; DISTRIBUTION Summary: "In Screen Traffic, Charles R. Acland examines how, since the mid-1980s, the U.S commercial movie business has altered conceptions of movie-going both within the industry and among audiences. He shows how studios, in their increasing reliance on revenues from international audiences and from the ancillary markets of television, videotape, dvd, and pay-perview, have cultivated an understanding of their commodoties as mutating global products. Consequently, the cultural practice of moviegoing has changed significantly, as has the place of the cinmea in relation to other sites of leisure. Integrating film and cultural theory with close analysis of promotional materials, entertainment news, trade publications, and economic reports, Acland presents an array of evidence for the new understanding of movies and moviegoing that has developed within popular culture and the entertainment industry. In particular, he dissects a key development: the rise of the megaplex, characterized by large auditoriums, plentiful screens, and consumer activities other than film viewing. He traces its genesis from 1986, with the re-entry of studios into the movie exhibition business, through 1998, when reports of the economic destabilization of exhibition began to surface, just as the rise of so-called e-cinema signaled another wave of change. Documenting the current tendency toward an acclerated cinema culture, one that appears to arrive simultaneously for everyone, everywhere, Screen Traffic unearths and critiques the corporate and cultural forces contributing to the 'felt internationalism' of our global era.
