'Alternative Worlds in Hollywood Cinema' is the first book to analyze these imaginary realms, tracing their construction and development across periods, genres and history.
"Through an analysis of such landmark films as 'The Wizard of Oz', 'It's a Wonderful Life' and 'Groundhog Day', Walters reveals how unconventional worlds are crucial to each film's dramatic agenda and narrative structure. This groundbreaking volume unifies decades of divergent work by film scholars and points the way towards a new theoretical framework for understanding fantasy in the context of popular film. 'Alternative Worlds in Hollywood Cinema' will be an essential resource for film studies scholars and movie buffs alike." The child in film : tears, fears and fairy tales / Karen Lury New Brunswick, N.J.: Rutgers University Press, 2010.

Yet the disruptive power of the child in films made for an adult audience has been a neglected topic. The Child in Film examines popular films including Taxi Driver, Man on Fire, and contemporary Japanese horror, as well as "art house" productions such as Mirror, La Jeté, and Pan's Labyrinth, and questions why the figure of the child has such a significant impact on the visual aspects and storytelling potential of cinema.
Karen Lury argues that the child as a liminal yet powerful agent has allowed filmmakers to play adventurously with cinema's formal conventions, with far-reaching consequences. She reveals how a child's relationship to time allows it to disturb conventional master-narratives and explores how the concern for and investment in the child actor conceals the reality of film acting and the skills of the child performer. She addresses the expression of child sexuality, and questions existing assumptions as to who children "really are." -- pulisher's web siteISBN: 9780813548968

Vicky Lebeau explores the complex and ongoing adventure of childhood on screen and examines how the child in film has been used to embody the aspirations and anxieties of modern life. Moving from early to contemporary cinema – a process that includes discussions of films such as Victorian ‘Child Pictures’, The Spirit of the Beehive, L'Enfant sauvage, 400 Blows, Lolita, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, Tarnation and The Woodsman – she uncovers the compulsion of film-makers to visualize the child and their need to use childhood as a way of reflecting on sexuality, language, death and difference. By bringing together childhood and cinema as two institutions of modern culture, this book ultimately uses the figure of the child – as image, as narrative, and as myth – to reflect on the form and significance of cinema itself.
Thought-provoking and engaging, Childhood and Cinema is an original and challenging contribution to studies in childhood and visual culture that will be of interest to readers in the fields of literature, film and cultural studies. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781861893529

Many studios, in a range of locations, now have the size and sophistication to service large-budget feature film production. This comprehensive study of contemporary international studio considers the circumstances in which this rash of studio complex building and renovating has occurred – in places as diverse as Rome, London, Berlin, Prague, Vancouver, Toronto, Sydney, the Gold Coast and Melbourne. Central to the study is an understanding of studio complexes as cinema and media cities providing not only sound stages but a full range of production and post-production services in the one location. That question and others are explored in this first comprehensive collection of essays on novel into film adaptations - from Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans (1826) to Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury (1929). Over two thirds of these essays were written expressly for this volume, the work of a new generation of literature-trained but film-oriented teachers and critics. Together they examine how novels and their film adaptations differ from one another in technique, characterisation, scope, and ideological content. To the original essays the editors have added some of the best available writings on adaptations by such critics as Stanley Kauffman and Manny Farber, plus selected commentaries from the actual participants in the process of adaptations - screenwriters and film directors." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Filmography: p. 321-336; Bibliography: p. 337-344ISBN: 0804426813 : $12.50. 0804466475 pbk. : $4.95LON: qum00211939; 12437055 857055

Edited by the distinguished filmmaker and historian Lewis Jacobs, the book has become an indispensable reference for both students and practitioners of documentary. This new edition brings The Documentary Tradition up to date and includes the writings of almost 100 filmmakers and critics. To the five parts which trace the development of the genre from the 1920s Jacobs has added a new section of seven essays on the documentaries of the 1970s. The section is introduced by his own survey of the filmmaking of the period, "From Political Activism to Women's Consciousness," and accompanied by a selected list of documentaries of the 1970s together with photographs from a number of these films. The bibliography of works on documentary films and filmmakers has been expanded." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Bibliography: p. 577-579ISBN: 0393950425LON: 1437994URL status: URL: 'http://-'

Beginning with a penetrating study of five cornfield sequences - including The Wizard of Oz, Arizona Dream, and Signs - Murray Pomerance journeys through a vast array of cinematic moments, technical methods, and laborious collaborations from the 1930s to the 200s to show how the viewer's experience of "reality" is put in context, challenged, and wilfully engaged. Four meditations deal with "reality effects" from different philosophical and technical angles. "Vivid Rivals" assesses active participation and critical judgement in seeing effects with works such as Defiance, Cloverfield, Knowing, and Thelma & Louise. "The Two of Us" considers double placement and doubled experience with films such as The Prestige, Niagara and A Stolen Life. "Being There" discusses cinematic performance and the problems of believability, highlighting such films as Gran Torino, The Manchurian Candidate, In Harm's Way, and other films. "Fairy Land" explores the art of scenic backing, focusing on the fictional world of Brigadoon, which borrows from both hard-edged realism and evocative landscape painting." - BOOK BLURBNotes: Contains illustrations, bibliographic references and indexISBN: 9780813560588

USA ; KAUFMAN, VICTOR A. ; PUTTNAM, DAVID ; CHARIOTS OF FIRE (UK, Hugh Hudson, 1981) ; KILLING FIELDS, THE (UK, Roland Joffe, 1984) Summary: "FAST FADE is the story of David Puttnam's meteoric rise to the top of the Hollywood heap, and of his equally precipitous descent. It is also a very personal look at the man himself, from young boy growing up in middle-class London suburb, feasting on a steady diet of Hollywood-made movies, to successful producer of small, thoughtful films such as LOCAL HERO, as well as epic, "important" features like THE MISSION. Along the way, Puttnam has made a number of enemies, but he also has made many loyal friends, and he has earned the respect of a great portion of the world's most visible - and, perhaps, most powerful - industry. FAST FADE is an honest, balanced look at the man and his career, and especially his turbulent tenure as head of one of Hollywood's most powerful studios." Federation news : journal of the Federation of Victorian Film Societies Carlton, Vic.: Federation of Victorian Film Societies,
Call No: held v.1 no.1-v.24 no.102 Sept. 1955-Dec. 1979 incompleteCorpAuthor: Federation of Victorian Film Societies; Federation news (Carlton, Vic.)Source: ATPlace: Carlton, Vic.Publisher: Federation of Victorian Film SocietiesPhysDes: v. : ill. ; 28 cmSubject: SOCIETIES, FILM. AUSTRALIA. VICTORIA ; FEDERATION OF VICTORIAN FILM SOCIETIES Summary: Federation News was a quarterly publication produced by the Federation of Victorian Film Societies. The journal promoted participation in local film societies, publishing a ‘Film Society Diary’ of upcoming screenings and events. Each issue profiled a different society in a section titled ‘Know Your Film Society’, providing information on the their history, focus and of course - screenings.
Federation News supported the activities of societies by providing information and reviews of available film prints, from sources including embassies and consulates, the State Film Centre and the National Library of Australia. The breadth of films profiled is almost encyclopedic, covering not just feature films but newsreels, actualities, tourism films, government films, and information films produced by businesses, such as Kodak and Qantas.
From 1955 to 1973, the journal was edited by George Lugg, a chemist who worked as an ‘Experimental Officer’ for the Department of Defence from 1958 - 1973. Lugg was a man of mystery. In 1966, Robert Rothols, who later succeeded Lugg as Editor of Federation News, was asked to guest edit an issue as Lugg would be away. Rothols later wrote, “George just went. For pleasure? For work? I didn’t ask.”
Soon after, Rothols was at a film screening and caught a newsreel about a simulated atomic bomb test in Queensland. “There, after the blast, were the research scientists examining the aftermath. And there in widescreen 70mm, was George, collecting specimens.”
When Lugg resigned from Federation News in 1973 due to his ailing health, he had collected and curated an extensive film reference library. The Federation bought the collection from Lugg, and later established the George Lugg Library at the AFI, which ultimately became the AFI Research Collection.
Federation News ceased publication in 1979, only six years after Lugg left. -- AFIRCNotes: Continued by: Filmviews; Description based on: Vol. 23, no. 4 (Dec. 1978); title from coverISSN: 0046-3582Frequency: QuarterlyLON: cvx00402014; 2557807 7296531

This volume identifies and investigates a far wider array of problems posed by the process of adaptation.
Thomas Leitch considers how the creators of short silent films attempted to give them the weight of literature, what sorts of fidelity are possible in an adaptation of sacred scripture, what it means for an adaptation to pose as an introduction to, rather than a transcription of, a literary classic, and why and how some films have sought impossibly close fidelity to their sources. Leitch's analysis moves beyond literary sources to consider why a small number of adaptors have risen to the status of auteurs and how illustrated books, comic strips, video games, and true stories have been adaptated to the screen." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Formerly CIP; Includes bibliographical references (p. Drawing on a wide variety of Hollywood and other examples, this impressive group of contributors considers a wide range of film adaptations, remakes and fan productions from various industrial, textual and critical perspectives. Their case studies discuss new versions of popular texts such as The Manchurian Candidate, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Stepford Wives. They provide new perspectives on the unlimited cultural production of classics like The Wizard of Oz, Wuthering Heights and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and they analyze the groundbreaking work of fan appropriations, including Batman and Spiderman fanvids, and fanfic trailer revisions for The Shining and television's The Adventures of Merlin." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references and index; Tertiary/Undergraduate, PostgraduateISBN: 9781137263346Contents: -- list of illustrations -- acknowledgments -- notes on contributors -- introduction: remake, remodel / Kathleen Loock and Constantine Verevis -- pt. Gaslight melodrama : from Victorian London to 1940s Hollywood / Guy Barefoot New York: Continuum, c2002.
Call No: 733 BARAuthor: Barefoot, Guy Source: USPlace: New YorkPublisher: ContinuumPubDate: c2002PhysDes: 212 p. : ill. ; 24 cmSubject: MELODRAMA ; HISTORICAL FILMS ; CRITICISM ; GASLIGHT (UK, Thorold Dickinson, 1940) ; HANGOVER SQUARE (US, John Brahm, 1945) ; BRITANNIA MEWS (UK, Jean Negulesco, 1949) ; [DOCTOR] DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE (US, Victor Fleming, 1941) Summary: "In 1945, a year when American crime films were apparently moving out onto the streets of contemporary Los Angeles and New York, one reviewer noted the emergence of a "cycle of mystery and horror pictures placed in the gaslight era of the turn of the century." For another, it seemed that for Hollywood there was "no world of today save the world of London by gaslight." In Gaslight Melodrama, Guy Barefoot examines the films that gave rise to such comments, and the pattern of discourses that gave rise to such films. The main focus of the book is provided by 1940s Hollywood melodramas such as Gaslight, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Hangover Square. Gaslight Melodrama also discusses a related cycle of British films that located murder and melodrama amid Victorian or Edwardian furnishings, and then looks beyond cinema to the Gothic novels of the 18th century; 19th century discussions of gas-lighting in street, home, and theater; and ambivalent 20th century responses to the Victorian era. Combining close analysis of particular film texts with attention to cinema's cultural context, Gaslight Melodrama provides an exploration of the ways in which the past has been the site of contested meaning, and an examination of the network of melodramatic narratives embedded within familiar and lesser-known examples of classical Hollywood cinema " -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references (p. Go! Melbourne : Melbourne in the sixties Melbourne, Australia: Circa, 2005.
Call No: 12(94) GOMAuthor: O'Hanlon, Seamus (ed.) ; Luckins, Tanja (ed.) ; Danks, Adrian Place: Melbourne, AustraliaPublisher: CircaPubDate: 2005PhysDes: 21 cm ; 284 ppSubject: SOCIETIES, FILM. AUSTRALIA. VICTORIA Summary: What were the 1960s really like in Melbourne? Was it just great music, brightly coloured clothes and The Pill? Or was there something deeper and perhaps more insidious happening? This fab new book takes a close look at the many cultural changes of the Sixties and how they affected the Victorian capital - and questions modern-day views about the way times actually did 'a' change'. Go! Melbourne in the Sixties covers defining moments like the visit of The Beatles, the end of the six o'clock closing, political activism, Jean Shrimpton at Flemington, as well as increases in tertiary study opportunities, dramatic population growth through migration and a baby-boom, and sets them in the context of a decade that many continue to see as a golden era. [Taken from back cover] Of particular relevance here is Adrian Danks' chapter on the Melbourne University Film Society (MUFS) entitled "Arrested Developments or from 'The Heroes are Tired' to 'The Tomb of Ligeia': Some Notes on the Place of the Melbourne University Film Society in 1960s Film Culture" which traces the origins of the film society, its contribution to Melbourne cultural life, its output (not just in exhibition but production and publishing) and its legacy.ISBN: 0975780204

Here are some of the stimulating - and occasionally surprising - answers to that question. This book is a follow-up to The Classic American Novel and the Movies, which ended in 1929, but it can be read on its own. [This book] covers novels and films from the 1930s to the 1970s, from Erskine Caldwell's Tobacco Road to James Dickey's Deliverance. In between, many film translations of notable novels are scrutinized - works by such authors as Faulkner, Hemingway, Steinbeck, McCullers, Nabokov, Updike, Kesey, and Vonnegut [...] Style, characterisation, theme, and ideology come under review. And we get behind-the-scenes insights into the actual filming of some celebrated novels. Of special value to scholars and students of film: extended filmographies by both author and film title of adaptations of American novels published between 1930 and 1975. In addition, there is a bibliography covering the same period, plus complete rental information on the films themselves." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Filmography: p. 349-428; Bibliography: p. 429-443; Sequel/companion to The Classic American Novel and the Movies, also in the CollectionISBN: 0804426821 : $14.50. 0804466491 pbk. : $6.95LON: 78004373; 1250638

In America, we witness the birth of Hollywood, circa 1910, where film quickly became a powerful industry and D. W. Griffith put American cinema on the map; later, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton developed a new language of visual comedy while eccentrics like Erich von Stroheim and Cecil B. DeMille turned cinema into a high art form and show biz respectively, and sex symbols like Rudolph Valentino and Greta Garbo heated up the screens.
Meanwhile, in Europe, German directors such as Ernst Lubitsch and Fritz Lang were establishing their careers and Russian greats Eisenstein and Pudovkin were already revolutionizing a nascent art form. At the end of the 1920s the very first "talkies", albeit rudimentary ones, brutally crushed the silent art, but by 1930 sound masterpieces such as Sternberg's The Blue Angel and Milestone's All Quiet on the Western Front were produced. This exploration of the founding years of cinema offers a fascinating perspective on a period in movie history that is far too often overlooked in our times. -- jacket blurbISBN: 9783822846131Donation: Megan McMurchy

Novel to film : an introduction to the theory of adaptation / Brian McFarlane Oxford New York: Clarendon Press Oxford University Press, 1996.
Call No: 753 MCFAuthor: McFarlane, Brian, 1934 Place: Oxford New YorkPublisher: Clarendon Press Oxford University PressPubDate: 1996PhysDes: viii, 279 p. : ill. ; 24 cmSubject: ADAPTATIONS ; LITERATURE AND THE CINEMA ; CAPE FEAR (US, Martin Scorsese, 1991) ; SCARLET LETTER, THE (US, Victor Sjostrom, 1926) ; RANDOM HARVEST (US, Mervyn LeRoy, 1942) ; GREAT EXPECTATIONS (UK, David Lean, 1946) ; DAISY MILLER (US, Peter Bogdanovich, 1974) Summary: "'It wasn't as good as the book' is a view often expressed about film adaptations and the starting point of many a film review or conversation. Novel to Film is the first systematic theoretical account of the process by which works of literature are transformed into the good, bad (sometimes ugly) but always distinctive medium of cinema. This book proposes a concise and carefully constructed account of how this metamorphosis may be analysed in depth. Drawing upon modern and literary film theory this book proposes a methodology for considering novels and the films made from them. In the first serious account of its kind, the book begins with a firm theoretical basis for a study of adaptation and then shows how this might be applied to five case studies representing a range of fiction and cinematic practice. The Scarlet Letter, Random Harvest, Great Expectations, Daisy Miller, and Cape Fear are the films, ranging from the silent era to the modern thriller. Uniquely wide ranging, this book provides an important new analysis of a much discussed but little understood topic.' [Taken from BOOK BLURB]Notes: Filmography: p. His rambunctious filmography remains an artistic force on par with Hollywood's greatest comic directors: Chaplin, Lubitsch, Sturges, and Wilder. Like Wilder, Edward's propensity for hilarity is double-helixed with pain, and in films like Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Pink Panther, and even days of Wine and Roses, we can hear him off-screen, laughing in the dark. And yet, despite those enormous successes, he was at one time considered a Hollywood villain. After his marriage to Julie Andrews, Edwards's Darling Lili nearly sunk both of them and brought Paramount Pictures to its knees. Almost overnight, Blake became an industry pariah, which ironically fortified his sense of satire, and allowed him to simultaneously fight the Hollywood tide as he rode it. Employing keen visual analysis, meticulous research, and troves of interviews and production files, Sam Wasson delivers the first complete account of one of the maddest figures Hollywood has ever known." - BOOK JACKETNotes: Includes filmography.; Includes bibliographical references and index.ISBN: 9780819569158Donation: Donated by Senses Of Cinema, 2009Contents: Prologue: Breaking in, 1922-1955 -- Blake begins, 1955-1959 -- Blake builds, 1959-1962 -- Blake blossoms, 1963-1968 -- Blake burns, 1968-1974 -- Panther pictures (Blake banks) -- Blake booms, 1979-1982 -- Blake breaks, 1983-1988 -- Blake bows, 1988-1991 -- Epilogue: Making out, October 24, 1993.

What emerged in the resulting conversations is a compelling (and previously underdocumented) history of feminism and feminist film and video, from its origins in the fifties and sixties to its apex in the seventies, to today." In a series of short analyses of iconic scenes and longer essays focusing on key directors, recurring themes and notable locations, the contributors examine the city's relationship to cinema from a variety of angles. Covering everything from sporting dramas to representations of the outlaw Ned Kelly to the coming-of-age films of the 1980s and beyond, this accessible trip around the birthplace of Australian cinema validates Melbourne's reputation as a creative hotbed and reveals the true significance of the films and filmmakers associated with the city.
