Beginning with the history of Shakespeare on film, from Olivier's and Branagh's Hamlet, contributors examine screen versions of literary classics, from Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and Louisa May Alcott's Little Women to Thomas Keneally's Schindler's Ark and Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting. Adaptations goes on to consider adaptation in reverse: How writers like Virginia Woolf incorporated cinematic elements into their work, and explains why there had to be a novel of Jane Campion's The Piano. Contributors examine adaptations from comics to film, such as the Batman movies, Star Trek's incarnations as a long-running tv series, and then as a sequence of movies, and 101 Dalmations' [sic] move from children's novel to cartoon to live-action film." - BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 226-238) and indexISBN: 041516737X (hbk); 0415167388 (pbk); 041516737X (hardcover : alk. paper); 0415167388 (pbk : alk. paper)LON: 14255526Contents: Part 1: an overview -- Adaptations: the contemporary dilemmas / Imelda Whelehan; Part 2: from text to screen -- Introduction / Deborah Cartmell -- The Shakespeare on screen industry / Deborah Cartmell -- Conservative Austen, radical Austen: Sense and Sensibility from text to screen / Julian North -- From Emma to Clueless: taste, pleasure and the scene of history / Esther Sonnet -- Imagining the puritan body: the 1995 cinematic version of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter / Roger Bromley -- Four Little Women: three films and a novel / Pat Kirkham and Sarah Warren -- Will Hollywood never learn? In a reading of the formal aspects in film imagery in contemporary British films spanning social realist, melodrama and horror genres, Hockenhull demonstrates how the spiritual aspects of landscape and nature mobilise a Neo-Romantic effect. She traces the influence of Romanticism and notions of the Sublime in key British films including 'Sweet Sixteen', 'The Queen', 'Ratcatcher', 'Eden Lake', '28 Days Later', 'My Summer of Love' and 'The Last Great Wilderness'. Operating at the intersection between film theory, art theory and aesthetics, this is a vital contribution which enables a fuller, multidimensional understanding of cinematic experience." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references and index.ISBN: 9781848859012Donation: donated by Senses of Cinema, 2014

Alan Hopgood has been a long-time writer and actor within the Australian film, tv, and theatre scene. His work includes screenplays for films such as Alvin Purple, Alvin Rides Again, Pacific Banana, as well as television shows such as Bellbird, Alvin Purple, And the Big Men Fly, Neighbours, Pugwall, and The Flying Doctors.
Alan was involved with Bellbird when the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) had made a decision to change the screening time of its show Bellbird. This did not sit well with a large selection of the viewing public who protested this move and wrote to the ABC to complain. Alan kept those letters in a view to get them published in a book, which didn’t eventuate. These letters were kept and are part of Alan’s donation to the AFI Research CollectionDonation: donated by Alan Hopgood, 2010ID2: 56

Titles covered were released between 1973 and 2010, a period coinciding with the revival of the long-dormant Australian film industry in the early 1970s, and continuing into the second wave of genre production spurred by the international success of the 2005 chiller Wolf Creek, The Cars That Ate Paris, The Last Wave, Roadgames, Razorback, Outback Vampires, Queen of the Damned, Black Water, and The Reef are among the titles represented. Each film is covered in a chapter that includes a cast and credits list, release information, contemporary reviews and DVD availability, as well as a synopsis and in-depth notes about the story, filmmaking techniques, acting performances, recurring themes and motifs, and overall effectiveness of the film as a work of horror. It reworks Pasolini's landmark concept of 'the cinema of poetry' to look at the transformation of film form in its encounter with society, the sacred, the subjective and the presence of the camera. In the 1970s, the influential forms of a cinema of poetry are analysed in key features by Altman, Herzog, Malick, Scorsese, Weir, Von Trotta and Tarkovsky while in the 1980s and 1990s the emergence of new filmmakers has meant a diffusion of different cinemas of poetry using new techniques and new poetries. Of key importance here is the work of Kieslowski, Lynch, Egoyan, Campion, Greenaway, Zhang Yimou, Tran Anh Hung and Wong Kar-Wai, as well as the reinvention of science fiction and film noir in American genre."

Fast Times and Excellent Adventures goes behind the scenes of a genre where cult hits mingled with studio blockbusters, where giants like Spielberg and Coppola rubbed shoulders with baby-faced first-timers and where ambitious future superstars Sean, Demi and Tom all got their big break. Music, comedy and politics - all play a part in the surprisingly complex history of the '80s teen movie. And while the films might have been aimed primarily at adolescents, the best tackle universal issues and remain a magnet to all ages. Time of your life, huh kid?
From a late '70s Hollywood in flux to an early '90s indie scene that gave youth cinema a timely reboot, respected film expert James King smartly highlights the personal struggles, the social changes and the boardroom shake-ups that produced an iconic time in movie history" -- BOOK BACK COVERNotes: Includes bibliographical references and indexISBN: 9781472123725

Home invasion in Sydney Morning Herald [The Guide] (29/08/2005) p.4
Call No: DVD RESEARCH FOLDER; DVD RESEARCH FOLDERAuthor: Idato, Michael Subject: DVD ; DVD AND TV. AUSTRALIA ; WORNER, TIM ; GLADIATOR (US, Ridley Scott, 2000) Summary: Looks at the effect rising DVD sales have had on TV in Australia. The high sales of TV DVDs are mentioned, as well as the 'negative' effects on TV programming (eg. the failure of Gladiator to win it's time slot due to so many Aussies watching the film on DVD already,) and therefore network programmers feel that they have to renegotiate contracts with the film studios in relation to film sales.Notes: accessed from: Factiva. Dow Jones Reuters Business Interactive LLC. RMIT University Library. (14 May 2007). Quotations: -- "Big progit margins are pushing studios towards TV on DVD. Most TV shows are gathering dust in libraries and cost significantly less to market than new-release movies. The firsat season of the comedy series Chappelle's Show, for example, sold more than 2 million copies in the US. The break-even point for the studio, according to media reports, was just 13,000 copies. Similarly, The Simpsons is expected to bring 20th Century Fox a windfall of more than $300 million worldwide once its first 15 seasons are released.; -- The distribution of TV shows and movies is built on a "window" structure. Each step in the food chain - cinema, DVD rental, DVD retail, pay-per-view cable, basic cable and free-to-air (in that order) - gets a window, usually six months, in which a given property is exclusively theirs. Most shows go to TV before DVD, but not always.; -- DVD has achieved enormous success, but it is also the first new delivery platform to undercut the others, particularly cinema and TV, by eroding their customer base and revenue potential. Worner believes distribution models will ultimately have to change, Some windows may shrink, some may close, or the order in which some fall may be shuffled.

The public mud-slinging and political gesturing that has kept it in the news have been accompanied by the simmering background of internal wars that affect the media monolith. Professor Richard Harding has been a man inside the ABC - among the men with the hottest seats and the best views of the bloody circus, the Commissioners. His brilliant observation of the events that have occurred in his time at the ABC gives a fresh insight into many of the issues that made headlines - the Bland affair, the staff commissioner, the continuing crisis and cries of "bias" in current affairs programmes, 2JJ and access radio, FM, the department of the media, the sports coverage tangle, etc. The effects of politics and government funding on the Australian Broadcasting Commission, and the role of the ABC as an opinion maker are seen in a realistic light from the centre of affairs." - BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographic references and indexISBN: 0725103159Donation: donated by the family of Wayne Levy, 2006

Drawing on many popular and some lesser known films from around the world, Christopher Falzon introduces students to key areas in philosophy, like: Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, The Theory of Knowledge, The Self and Personal Identity, Critical Thinking.
Perfect for beginners, this book guides the reader through philosophy using illuminating cinematic works, like Avatar, Inception, Fight Club, Wings of Desire, Run Lola Run, A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner, Dirty Harry and many other films.
The fully revised and updated Third Edition features: an expanded introduction that provides a new discussion of the relationship between film and philosophy; new material on notable philosophers such as Aristotle, Merleau-Ponty and Rawls; and coverage of new topics like virtue ethics and what Socrates offers for critical thinking. An updated glossary, references and bibliography, and a filmography, are also included in the Third Edition. -- publisher's web siteNotes: Includes glossaryISBN: 9780415538169Contents: Preface -- Introduction -- 1 - Plato’s Picture Show - the theory of knowledge -- 2 - All of Me - the self and personal identity -- 3 - Crimes and Misdemeanors - moral philosophy -- 4 - Antz - social and political philosophy -- 5 - Modern Times - society, science, and technology -- 6 - The Holy Grail - critical thinking -- Further Reading -- Glossary -- Bibliography -- Filmography -- Index

Through cinematography, mise-en-scène, editing, and other production activities, film takes the world “out there” and refashions it. Religion achieves similar ends by setting apart particular objects and periods of time, telling stories, and gathering people together for communal actions and concentrated focus. The result of both cinema and religious practice is a re-created world: a world of fantasy, a world of ideology, a world we long to live in, or a world we wish to avoid at all costs.
Religion and Film introduces readers to both religious studies and film studies by focusing on the formal similarities between cinema and religious practices and on the ways they each re-create the world. Explorations of film show how the cinematic experience relies on similar aesthetic devices on which religious rituals have long relied: sight, sound, the taste of food, the body, and communal experience. Meanwhile, a deeper understanding of the aesthetic nature of religious rituals can alter our understanding of film production. Utilizing terminology and theoretical insights from the study of religion as well as the study of film, Religion and Film shows that by paying attention to the ways films are constructed, we can shed new light on the ways religious myths and rituals are constructed and vice versa.
This thoroughly revised and expanded new edition is designed to appeal to the needs of courses in religion as well as film departments. In addition to two new chapters, this edition has been restructured into three distinct sections that offer students and instructors theories and methods for thinking about cinema in ways that more fully connect film studies with religious studies. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 978023117650Donation: Senses of CinemaContents: List of Illustrations

Siegel distinguishes between a liberal approach to visual representations, which has over-emphasized normative equal opportunity while undervaluing our distinctive erotic selves, and a radical approach to visual representation, which portrays forbidden sexualities and desires. She illustrates how visual media participates in and even drives political policies related to pedophilia, prostitution, interracial relationships, and war. By examining such popular film and television shows as Mystic River, The Wire, Fifty Shades of Grey, Batman Returns, and the HBO hits, Sex and the City and Girls, Siegel takes the discussion of radical sex in the movies out of the margins of political discussions and puts it in the center, where, she argues, it has belonged all along. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780253018069Contents: Acknowledgments

Speaking truths with film : evidence, ethics, politics in documentary / Bill Nichols Oakland: California University of California Press, 2016.

What role does visual evidence play in relation to a documentary's arguments about the world in which we live? Can a documentary be believed, and why or why not? How do documentaries abide by or subvert ethical expectations? Are mockumentaries a form of subversion? In what ways can the documentary be an aesthetic experience and at the same time have political or social impact? And how can such impacts be empirically measured? Pioneering film scholar Bill Nichols investigates the ways in which documentaries strive for accuracy and truthfulness, but simultaneously fabricate a form that shapes reality. Such films may rely on re-enactment to re-create the past, storytelling to provide satisfying narratives, and rhetorical figures such as metaphor and expressive forms such as irony to make a point. In many ways documentaries are a fiction unlike any other. With clarity and passion, Nichols offers close readings of several provocative documentaries including Land without Bread, Restrepo, The Thin Blue Line, The Act of Killing, and Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine as part of an authoritative examination of the layered approaches and delicate ethical balance demanded of documentary filmmakers"--Provided by publisher.Notes: Includes bibliographical references and index.Contents: Documentary film and the modernist avant-garde -- Documentary reenactment and the fantasmatic subject -- Letter to Lynn Sachs about her film Investigation of a flame -- Breaking the frame, gender, violation and the avant-garde -- The coming of sound -- To see the world anew : revisiting the voice of documentary -- The sound of music -- The question of evidence : the power of rhetoric and the documentary film -- The terrorist event -- Remaking history : Jay Leyda, and the compilation film -- Restrepo : a case of inadvertent evidence -- The symptomatic biopic : Steve Jobs : the man in the machine -- Documentary ethics : doing the right thing -- Irony, paradox and the documentary : double meanings and double binds -- Letter to Errol Morris : feelings of revulsion and the limits of academic discourse -- Perpetrators, trauma and film -- San Francisco newsreel : collectives, politics, films -- The political documentary and the problem of impact.

Synthetics : aspects of art and technology in Australia, 1956-1975 / Stephen Jones Cambridge, Massachusetts: MIT Press,
Call No: 220"313" JONAuthor: Jones, Stephen Edition: 2011Place: Cambridge, MassachusettsPublisher: MIT PressPhysDes: xii,395 p. : illustrated ; 24 cmSeries: LeonardoSubject: TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS ; TECHNOLOGY AND THE CINEMA. AUSTRALIA ; COMPUTER GRAPHICS. AUSTRALIA ; COMPUTERS AND THE CINEMA ; BURNS, TIM ; CANTRILL, ARTHUR & CORINNE ; GLASHEEN, MICHAEL ; PERRY, DAVID ; THOMS, ALBIE ; ULURU (AT, Michael Glasheen, 1978) Summary: New technologies continually arise, offering repeated opportunities to artists in search of the technologically novel. Stephen Jones calls this phenomenon the "rolling new," and in Synthetics he describes how artists in Australia used new technologies in their art, from the early days of digital computing in the 1950s to a landmark exhibition in 1975. Jones looks at not only the artists and the artworks they produced but also at the evolution of computing technologies and video displays as these new forms of media developed into tools that artists could use. He also examines the collaborations that sprang up between artists and the technologists who taught them how to use these new devices. The process, he finds, was reciprocal: the offerings of the engineer could inspire the artist as much as the needs of the artist could inspire the engineer.
Jones discusses the constraints imposed by the limitations of new technologies as they developed and shows that different types of output and display technologies made for the production of very different kinds of images. He explores the development of computer graphics, the use by artists of such new conceptual paradigms as post-object art, and the emergence of video art in the late 1960s and early 1970s. By 1975, the art and technology movement in Australia reached something of a watershed. The work itself became established as an art form just as funding dwindled and a popular and supportive left-wing government left office. And yet, Jones writes, the early electronic artists laid the foundation for today's burgeoning culture of new media art in Australia. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780262014960Donation: Megan McMurchy

CARROLL, LEWIS Summary: Since the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, Lewis Carroll’s Alice has delighted children and adults alike. However, this girl-hero was always destined for life beyond the page.
From silent film to animation, she has been portrayed many times and continues to inspire. Wonderland follows Alice’s journey from page to screen, from 1903’s silent Alice in Wonderland to her first talking film in 1931, to Tim Burton’s recent blockbusters. It celebrates the endurance of Carroll’s stories and characters, and the remarkable technological innovations that have enabled filmmakers to continually reimagine Alice.
Tracing Alice’s evolution on screen, Wonderland is a journey down the rabbit hole and into an enchanted world where expectations are upended and curiosity rewarded. -- publisher's web siteNotes: This publication is produced in partnership with Senses of CinemaISBN: 9780500501177
