Claiming the real : the Griersonian documentary and its legitimations / Brian Winston London: British Film Institute, 1995.

The camera, it seems, can lie. Alterations may noe be made to still or moving images which materially change their meaning yet which are undetectable.
What does this do to the status of the documentary film? In this informed and lively book Brian Winston rewrites the history of the documentary to take account of technological change. He subjects the great figures of the past - Grierson, Flaherty, Dziga-Verov - to a searcing critique, and examines both the principles and practice of the major movements of documentary, such as cinema verite. He offers his own definition of the essential difference between fiction film and documentary, and identifies the fundamentally ethical basis of any film practice which attempts to capture the 'truth'" -- Taken from the back cover.Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 277-294) and indexISBN: 0851704638 (cased); 0851704646 (pbk)LON: 11552015URL status: URL: 'http://-'

Edited by the distinguished filmmaker and historian Lewis Jacobs, the book has become an indispensable reference for both students and practitioners of documentary. This new edition brings The Documentary Tradition up to date and includes the writings of almost 100 filmmakers and critics. To the five parts which trace the development of the genre from the 1920s Jacobs has added a new section of seven essays on the documentaries of the 1970s. The section is introduced by his own survey of the filmmaking of the period, "From Political Activism to Women's Consciousness," and accompanied by a selected list of documentaries of the 1970s together with photographs from a number of these films. The bibliography of works on documentary films and filmmakers has been expanded." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Bibliography: p. 577-579ISBN: 0393950425LON: 1437994URL status: URL: 'http://-'

Each essay focuses on one or two important documentaries, engaging in questions surrounding ethics, ideology, politics, power, race, gender, and representation -- but always in terms of how they arise out of or are involved in the reading of specific documentaries as particular textual constructions. By closely reading documentaries as rich visual works, this anthology fills a void in the critical writing on documentaries, which tends to privilege production over aesthetic pleasure. As we perceive and comprehend the world through visual media increasingly, understanding the textual strategies by which individual documentaries are organized has become critically important. Together, the essays cover the significant developments in the history of the documentary, from the first commercially released feature, Nanook of the North (1922), to modern independent productions, such as An American Family (1973), Tongues Untied (1989), and Finding Christa (1991), and including important national and stylistic movements and various production contexts from the mainstream to the avant-garde. Seth Feldman places Dziga Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera (1929) within the context of constructivism and futurism; Vivian Sobchack discusses the strategies of Bunuel's Las Hurdas (Land without Bread, 1931) in relation to surrealism; and Joanne Hershfield explores Que viva Mexico! (1932) as the presentation of an exotic culture by a European director. Documenting the Documentary offers clear, serious, and insightful analyses of documentary films, and is a welcome balancebetween theory and criticism, abstract conceptualization and concrete analysis. --FROM PUBLISHER'S SITENotes: includes bibliiographic references and indexISBN: 0814326390Contents: Filmmaker as hunter / William Rothman -- Peace between man and machine / Seth Feldman -- Paradise regained / Joanne Hershfield -- Synthetic vision / Vivian Sobchack -- Art of national projection / William Guynn -- Mass psychology of fascist cinema / Frank P. Leni Riefenstahl : the fallen film goddess / by Glenn B. Infield New York: Crowell, 1976.
Call No: 81RIE INFAuthor: Infield, Glenn B. (Glenn Berton) Source: USPlace: New YorkPublisher: CrowellPubDate: 1976PhysDes: 278 p., [13] leaves of plates : ill. ; 24 cmSubject: FASCISM AND THE CINEMA ; GERMANY ; JEWS AND THE CINEMA ; WOMEN FILMMAKERS ; WOMEN IN FILMS. GERMANY ; WORLD WAR II AND THE CINEMA ; RIEFENSTAHL, LENI ; OLYMPIA (G, Leni Riefenstahl, 1938) ; TRIUMPH OF THE WILL (G, Leni Riefenstahl, 1935) Summary: "Notoriety clings to [Leni] Riefenstahl's name. She is reputed to have danced nude for the Fuhrer. She is linked to Goebbels, Striecher, Borman, and other evil luminaries of the Nazi party. After the war, she was investigated by the Nuremburg Commission, and found innocent; she had never been a Party member. Yet Leni's cinema helped to create the myth of Nazi supremacy; her sense of drama and destiny, her imagery, mesmerized Germany during Hitler's climb to power. Was she responsible? Was she conscious of the political meaning of her work? Or was she a naive opportunist, an incomparable technician, exploiting the chance of a lifetime? Was she Hitler's mistress, as has been alleged? Or was she just a free spirit, the pagan sensualist of her own films? These are only some of the intriguing questions Glenn B. Infield explores in Leni Riefenstahl: The Fallen Film Goddess." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Bibliography: p. 262-267ISBN: 0690011679LON: 76007084; 760131

In America, we witness the birth of Hollywood, circa 1910, where film quickly became a powerful industry and D. W. Griffith put American cinema on the map; later, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton developed a new language of visual comedy while eccentrics like Erich von Stroheim and Cecil B. DeMille turned cinema into a high art form and show biz respectively, and sex symbols like Rudolph Valentino and Greta Garbo heated up the screens.
Meanwhile, in Europe, German directors such as Ernst Lubitsch and Fritz Lang were establishing their careers and Russian greats Eisenstein and Pudovkin were already revolutionizing a nascent art form. At the end of the 1920s the very first "talkies", albeit rudimentary ones, brutally crushed the silent art, but by 1930 sound masterpieces such as Sternberg's The Blue Angel and Milestone's All Quiet on the Western Front were produced. This exploration of the founding years of cinema offers a fascinating perspective on a period in movie history that is far too often overlooked in our times. -- jacket blurbISBN: 9783822846131Donation: Megan McMurchy

A. Pennebaker, Frederick Wiseman and Albert and David Maysles. Richard Barsam provides a critical framework against which the non-fiction film can be studied and enjoyed. Avisar bases his discussion of these filmic efforts on the assumption that the Holocaust was a unique and unprecedented historical experience and that as such it poses special problems for those, particularly artists, who seek to reflect upon this historical event. He disagrees with theorists who believe that art cannot deal with the Holocaust in a meaningful way. This study examines how cinematic art meets the challenge of dealing with the extraordinary nature of the Holocaust. Avisar uses the concepts of representation, presentation, and comprehension to analyze a select number of Holocaust films. The cinematic medium offers a wide range of artistic visions of historical events. Avisar combines theoretical concepts peculiar to the nature of cinema with arguments on the uniqueness of Hitler's Final Solution in presenting detailed analyses of such remarkable films as Night and Fog, The Damned, The Great Dictator, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Shop on Main Street, The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, and Mr. Klein." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Bibliography: p. IVANOVO DETSTVO ; FOREIGN AFFAIR, A (US, Billy Wilder, 1948) ; OLYMPIA (G, Leni Riefenstahl, 1938) Summary: Berlin's unique history of conflict, transmutation and violence has created an arena of extraordinary urban surfaces, from which the present-day city and its layered, wounded past are projected simultaneously. THE WALLS OF BERLIN explores the intimate connections between those surfaces and the works of art and film which have both incised Berlin's urban screens and been inspired by them.
Drawing on a vast range of material – from the first films of Berlin in the 1890s to the city's impact on contemporary digital art – THE WALLS OF BERLIN probes many of Berlin's overlooked but most illuminating spaces inflected by art and film: the Hansa recording-studios, the Buch asylum, ruined hotels and cinemas, and Berlin's immense slaughterhouse sub-city.
It is essential reading for those engaged with the transformations of contemporary cities, and students of urban-history, architecture, art and film.ISBN: 9780982046463Contents: The Baltic Wall -- The Skladanowsky Projector -- WALLS OF BERLIN -- Berlin-by-the-Sea -- A `Wall' of Berlin -- Images
