Belle de jour / Michael Wood London: British Film Instistute, c2000.
Call No: 79BEL WOOAuthor: Wood, Michael Source: UKPlace: LondonPublisher: British Film InstistutePubDate: c2000PhysDes: 79 p. : ill. ; 19 cm.Series: BFI film classicsSubject: BELLE DE JOUR (FR, Luis Bunuel 1967) ; BELLE DE JOUR (FR/IT, Luis Bunuel, 1967) Summary: Belle de Jour (1967) inaugurated the last phase of Luis Bunuel's fifty-year film-making career. At once a sharp social satire and a reflection on the interlocking of reality and fantasy, memory and dream, Belle de Jour stars Catherine Deneuve as Severine, a respectable doctor's wife who has a secret afternoon life as a prostitute. Dressed by Yves Saint-Laurent, Deneuve personifies a European class that is beautiful and enduring, in spite of its aura of decadence. But she's also a woman at war with her past and her desires, trying to clear her mind - if she can - of its ghosts.".
"In this study Michael Wood sets out to unravel some of the enigmas and paradoxes of one of Bunuel's most intricate films. What in Belle de Jour is meant to be taken at face value, and what is fabrication, riddle or satire? In playing the guessing-game of Belle de Jour, Wood proposes an analysis of late Bunuel. Neither a serene old man nor an unreconstructed Surrealist, the Bunuel of Belle de Jour is, for Wood, a film-maker whose insights are all the more devastating for being so lightly and stylishly delivered."-- [Extract taken from the back of the book]Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 77)ISBN: 0851708234Contents: Introduction -- Styles of impatience -- Production values -- Bun~uel and the novel -- The interpretation of dreams -- Se´verine and the wheelchair -- Late Bun~uel -- Credits -- Bibliography.

Dangerous, enigmatic and elusive, Luis Bunuel counts among the greatest creative artists, and one of the least understood major film makers, of the twentieth century. His films, made over a ffity-year period, from his 1929 debut un Chien Andalou, to a late blossoming in the sixties and seventies with Belle de Jour and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise, still retain their power to shock. John Baxter's superb biography brings Bunuel into the light for the first time, revealing the character behind the anarchism, the sensitivity behind the cynicism, and analysing his calculated use of the bizarre." - BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references (p. Christophe Honore : A critical introduction / David A. Gerstner and Julien Nahmias Detroit, Michigan: Wayne State University Press, 2015.
Call No: 81 HON GERAuthor: Gerstner, David A. ; Nahmias, Julien Edition: 2015Place: Detroit, MichiganPublisher: Wayne State University PressPubDate: 2015PhysDes: 256, xiv p. ; illus. ; 23 cmSeries: Contemporary approaches to film and media seriesSubject: HONORE, CHRISTOPHE ; DANS PARIS (FR, Christophe Honore, 2006) ; CHANSONS D'AMOUR (FR, Christophe Honore, 2007) ; BELLE PERSONNE, LA (FR, Christophe Honore, 2008) Summary: French filmmaker Christophe Honoré challenges audiences with complex cinematic form, intricate narrative structures, and aesthetically dynamic filmmaking. But the limited release of his films outside of Europe has left him largely unknown to U.S. audiences. In Christophe Honoré: A Critical Introduction, authors David A. Gerstner and Julien Nahmias invite English-speaking scholars and cinéastes to explore Honoré’s three most recognized films, Dans Paris (2006), Les Chansons d’amour (2007), and La Belle personne (2008)—"the trilogy." Gerstner and Nahmias analyze Honoré’s filmmaking as the work of a queer auteur whose cinematic engagement with questions of family, death, and sexual desire represent new ground for queer theory.
Considering each of the trilogy films in turn, the authors take a close look at Honoré’s cinematic technique and how it engages with France’s contemporary cultural landscape. With careful attention to the complexity of Honoré’s work, they consider critically contested issues such as the filmmaker’s cinematic strategies for addressing AIDS, the depth of his LGBTQ politics, his representations of death and sexual desire, and the connections between his films and the New Wave. Anchored by a comprehensive interview with the director, the authors incorporate classical and contemporary film theories to offer a range of cinematic interventions for thinking queerly about the noted film author.
Christophe Honoré: A Critical Introduction reconceptualizes the relationship between film theory and queer theory by moving beyond predominant literary and linguistic models, focusing instead on cinematic technique. Students and teachers of queer film will appreciate this thought-provoking volume. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780814338636

A MA SOEUR ; BREILLAT, CATHERINE ; BRESSON, ROBERT Summary: Whether embodied in literature, theater, or film, an enduring theme of many artistic works has been the protagonist’s search for identity. Such quests are typically psychological or spiritual journeys and depicted on the screen in a variety of manifestations—endeavors embarked upon to address an emotional trauma or to overcome an obstacle in the hero’s life. Using Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et La Bête as a leitmotif, these pursuits are discussed by author Maria Garcia as encounters with the “Beast.” At the end of their quests, heroes are reborn into their new identities, while the Beast disappears, transforms, or dies.
In Cinematic Quests for Identity: The Hero’s Encounter with the Beast, Garcia examines the cinematic conventions of the male and female search for individuation across several genres. After discussing La Belle et La Bête, the author looks at a number of films including three iconic male journeys—The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Searchers, and The Deer Hunter. Additional chapters focus on The Silence of the Lambs, Bringing Up Baby, The Lady Eve, The Secret of Roan Inish, The Natural, and Moneyball. The book concludes with a consideration of the three fairy tale films by Catherine Breillat—Fat Girl, Bluebeard, and The Sleeping Beauty—and the female characters in several Robert Bresson films, including The Trial of Joan of Arc.
Providing a unique and original perspective on films throughout the world, this provocative book draws upon Jungian thought, as well as several literary traditions including fairy tales, epic poetry, and Greek and Celtic mythology. Aimed at scholars of film and film theory, Cinematic Quests for Identity will also appeal to movie fans interested in a deeper understanding of films that explore a character’s struggle to live a conscious life. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781442246973

It reworks Pasolini's landmark concept of 'the cinema of poetry' to look at the transformation of film form in its encounter with society, the sacred, the subjective and the presence of the camera. In the 1970s, the influential forms of a cinema of poetry are analysed in key features by Altman, Herzog, Malick, Scorsese, Weir, Von Trotta and Tarkovsky while in the 1980s and 1990s the emergence of new filmmakers has meant a diffusion of different cinemas of poetry using new techniques and new poetries. Of key importance here is the work of Kieslowski, Lynch, Egoyan, Campion, Greenaway, Zhang Yimou, Tran Anh Hung and Wong Kar-Wai, as well as the reinvention of science fiction and film noir in American genre."

But 'heritage cinema' is all too often discussed from literary (not cinematic) perspectives, and criticism of the films has long been overshadowed by the question of a film's fidelity to the original text. This volume of essays, reviews, and interviews seeks to redress this imbalance, by examining the often antagonistic relationship between literature and film - presenting both sides of the argument about whether heritage cinema's elaborate aesthetics owe more to nostalgia than to historical accuracy. In her challenging introduction to the volume, Ginette Vincendeau sketches the terms of the debate, arguing that the genre is an important, but often critically neglected, form of popular cinema. Film/Literature/Heritage, the latest in a series of 'Sight and Sound Readers', embraces a wide range of literary adaptation, from William Shakespeare to William Burroughs, covering films from Orlando to LA Confidential, and directors from Martin Scorcese to Peter Greenaway." - BOOK BLURBISBN: 0851708420; 0851708412(pbk.) : ¦13.99LON: 22285912

His witty, incisive criticism later worked exacting language into an exploration of the feelings and strategies that went into low-budget and radical films as diverse as Michael Snow's Wavelength, Werner Herzog's Fata Morgana, and Shantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman. Expanded with an in-depth interview and seven essays written in collaboration with his wife, artist Patricia Patterson, Negative Space gathers Farber's most influential writings, making this an indispensable collection for all lovers of filmNotes: "First Da Capo Press edition"--T.p. verso; Includes indexISBN: 0306808293 (pbk. : alk. paper)LON: 13667387

Political animals : the new feminist cinema / Sophie Mayer London ; New York: I.B. Tauris, 2016.
Call No: 744.7 MAYAuthor: Mayer, Sophie Edition: 2016Place: London ; New YorkPublisher: I.B. TaurisPubDate: 2016PhysDes: xii,260 : illustrated ; 23 cmSubject: FEMINISM AND THE CINEMA ; FEMININITY IN FILMS ; WOMEN AND THE CINEMA ; BELLE (UK, Amma Asante, 2013) ; FROZEN (US, Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee, 2013) ; BIGELOW, KATHRYN ; CAMPION, JANE ; VARDA, AGNES ; PERSEPOLIS (FR, Marjane Satrapi, 2007) Summary: Feminist filmmakers are hitting the headlines. The last decade has witnessed: the first Best Director Academy Award won by a woman; female filmmakers reviving, or starting, careers via analogue and digital television; women filmmakers emerging from Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Pakistan, South Korea, Paraguay, Peru, Burkina Faso, Kenya and The Cree Nation; a bold emergent trans cinema; feminist porn screened at public festivals; Sweden's A-Markt for films that pass the Bechdel Test; and Pussy Riot's online videos sending shockwaves around the world. A new generation of feminist filmmakers, curators and critics is not only influencing contemporary debates on gender and sexuality, but starting to change cinema itself, calling for a film world that is intersectional, sustainable, family-friendly and far-reaching. Political Animals argues that, forty years since Laura Mulvey's seminal essay 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema' identified the urgent need for a feminist counter-cinema, this promise seems to be on the point of fulfilment.
Forty years of a transnational, trans-generational cinema has given rise to conversations between the work of now well-established filmmakers such as Abigail Child, Sally Potter and Agnes Varda, twenty-first century auteurs including Kelly Reichardt and Lucretia Martel, and emerging directors such as Sandrine Bonnaire, Shonali Bose, Zeina Daccache, and Hana Makhmalbaf. A new and diverse generation of British independent filmmakers such as Franny Armstrong, Andrea Arnold, Amma Asante, Clio Barnard, Tina Gharavi, Sally El Hoseini, Carol Morley, Samantha Morton, Penny Woolcock, and Campbell X join a worldwide dialogue between filmmakers and viewers hungry for a new and informed point of view. Lovely, vigorous and brave, the new feminist cinema is a political animal that refuses to be domesticated by the persistence of everyday sexism, striking out boldly to claim the public sphere as its own. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781784533724

Unquiet Dreams : The Bestiary of Walerian Borowczyk / By Simon Strong [Collingwood, Victoria]: The LedaTape Organisation,
Call No: 81 BOR STRAuthor: Strong, Simon Edition: 2015Place: [Collingwood, Victoria]Publisher: The LedaTape OrganisationPhysDes: 134 pages ; illustrations (black and white, and colour) ; 24cmSubject: BOROWCZYK, WALERIAN ; BETE, LA (FR, Walerian Borowczyk, 1975) ; GOTO L'ILE D'AMOUR (FR, Walerian Borowczyk, 1968) ; BLANCHE (FR, Walerian Borowczyk, 1971) ; DZIEJE GRZECHU (PL, Walerian Borowczyk, 1975) ; EMMANUELLE (FR, Just Jaeckin, 1974) ; BESTIALITY ; BELLE ET LA BETE, LA (FR, Jean Cocteau, 1946) ; Dauman, Anatole Notes: Walerian Borowczyk was far and away the classiest of sleazy film-makers, and the sleaziest of the classy ones. Starting as an animator and director of visually rich kafkaesque fantasies (Blanche, Goto, Island of Love) he divided audiences by moving into graphic erotica (Immoral Tales, The Beast) and subsequently worked his way through exploitation tropes (nunsploitation, Jeksploitation, togasploitation) before creatively imploding spectacularly with his bizarre contribution to the Emmanuelle series.
Inspired in look and feel by seventies film and filth mags like Continental Film Review and Sex Stars System, the present author does not much value coherence or consistency. He is interested in contexts and connections, obscure minutiae, jokes (he will judge what is funny), and blurry screen grabs of topless women from seventies softcore flicks. Whilst not ideal, it's better than nothing. Probably. You figure it out. -- Back cover blurbISBN: 9780992302160Donation: Donated by The LedaTape Organisation (Collingwood)
