Beginning with the history of Shakespeare on film, from Olivier's and Branagh's Hamlet, contributors examine screen versions of literary classics, from Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and Louisa May Alcott's Little Women to Thomas Keneally's Schindler's Ark and Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting. Adaptations goes on to consider adaptation in reverse: How writers like Virginia Woolf incorporated cinematic elements into their work, and explains why there had to be a novel of Jane Campion's The Piano. Contributors examine adaptations from comics to film, such as the Batman movies, Star Trek's incarnations as a long-running tv series, and then as a sequence of movies, and 101 Dalmations' [sic] move from children's novel to cartoon to live-action film." - BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 226-238) and indexISBN: 041516737X (hbk); 0415167388 (pbk); 041516737X (hardcover : alk. paper); 0415167388 (pbk : alk. paper)LON: 14255526Contents: Part 1: an overview -- Adaptations: the contemporary dilemmas / Imelda Whelehan; Part 2: from text to screen -- Introduction / Deborah Cartmell -- The Shakespeare on screen industry / Deborah Cartmell -- Conservative Austen, radical Austen: Sense and Sensibility from text to screen / Julian North -- From Emma to Clueless: taste, pleasure and the scene of history / Esther Sonnet -- Imagining the puritan body: the 1995 cinematic version of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter / Roger Bromley -- Four Little Women: three films and a novel / Pat Kirkham and Sarah Warren -- Will Hollywood never learn? In a reading of the formal aspects in film imagery in contemporary British films spanning social realist, melodrama and horror genres, Hockenhull demonstrates how the spiritual aspects of landscape and nature mobilise a Neo-Romantic effect. She traces the influence of Romanticism and notions of the Sublime in key British films including 'Sweet Sixteen', 'The Queen', 'Ratcatcher', 'Eden Lake', '28 Days Later', 'My Summer of Love' and 'The Last Great Wilderness'. Operating at the intersection between film theory, art theory and aesthetics, this is a vital contribution which enables a fuller, multidimensional understanding of cinematic experience." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references and index.ISBN: 9781848859012Donation: donated by Senses of Cinema, 2014

Apocalypse-cinema : 2012 and other ends of the world / Peter Szendy; translated by Will Bishop; Foreword by Samuel Webber New York: Fordham University Press, 2015.
Call No: 735.1 SZEAuthor: Szendy, Peter ; Bishop, Will ; Webber, Samuel Edition: 2015Place: New YorkPublisher: Fordham University PressPubDate: 2015PhysDes: xx, 160 p. : illustrations ; 22 cmSeries: French VoicesSubject: APOCALYPSE IN FILMS ; MELANCHOLIA (DK/SW/FR/G, Lars von Trier, 2011) ; LAST MAN ON EARTH, THE (US/IT, Ubaldo Ragona, 1964) ; TERMINATOR, THE (US, James Cameron, 1984) ; [TWENTY-TWELVE] 2012 (US/CN, Roland Emmerich, 2009) ; A.I: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (US, Steven Spielberg, 2001) ; WATCHMEN (US, Zack Snyder, 2009) ; SUNSHINE (UK/US, Danny Boyle, 2007) ; BLADE RUNNER (US, Ridley Scott, 1982) ; [TWELVE] MONKEYS (US, Terry Gilliam, 1995) ; ROAD, THE (US, John Hillcoat, 2009) ; BLOB, THE (US, Chuck Russell, 1988) Summary: Apocalypse-cinema is not only the end of time that has so often been staged as spectacle in films like 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, and The Terminator. By looking at blockbusters that play with general annihilation while also paying close attention to films like Melancholia, Cloverfield, Blade Runner, and Twelve Monkeys, this book suggests that in the apocalyptic genre, film gnaws at its own limit.
Apocalypse-cinema is, at the same time and with the same double blow, the end of the world and the end of the film. It is the consummation and the (self-)consumption of cinema, in the form of an acinema that Lyotard evoked as the nihilistic horizon of filmic economy. The innumerable countdowns, dazzling radiations, freeze-overs, and seismic cracks and crevices are but other names and pretexts for staging film itself, with its economy of time and its rewinds, its overexposed images and fades to white, its freeze-frames and digital touch-ups.
The apocalyptic genre is not just one genre among others: It plays with the very conditions of possibility of cinema. And it bears witness to the fact that, every time, in each and every film, what Jean-Luc Nancy called the cine-world is exposed on the verge of disappearing.
In a Postface specially written for the English edition, Szendy extends his argument into a debate with speculative materialism. Apocalypse-cinema, he argues, announces itself as cinders that question the “ultratestimonial” structure of the filmic gaze. The cine-eye, he argues, eludes the correlationism and anthropomorphic structure that speculative materialists have placed under critique, allowing only the ashes it bears to be heard. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780823264810

Audience-ology : how moviegoers shape the films we love / Kevin Goetz New York: Simon Element, 2021.
Call No: 410(73) GOEAuthor: Goetz, Kevin Edition: 2022Place: New YorkPublisher: Simon ElementPubDate: 2021PhysDes: 225 pagesSubject: AUDIENCE RESEARCH. USA ; AUDIENCES. USA ; COCKTAIL (US, Roger Donaldson, 1988) ; FORREST GUMP (US, Robert Zemeckis, 1994) ; PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (US, Oren Peli, 2007) ; TITANIC (US, James Cameron, 1997) ; WAR OF THE ROSES, THE (US, Danny DeVito, 1989) Summary: Discover the fascinating and secretive process of audience testing of Hollywood movies through these firsthand stories from famous filmmakers, studio heads, and stars.
Audience-ology takes you to one of the most unknown places in Hollywood—a place where famous directors are reduced to tears and multi-millionaire actors to fits of rage. A place where dreams are made and fortunes are lost. From “the best in the business” (Sacha Baron Cohen), this book is the chronicle of how real people have written and rewritten America’s cinematic masterpieces by showing up, watching a rough cut of a new film, and giving their unfettered opinions so that directors and studios can salvage their blunders, or better yet, turn their movies into all-time classics.
Each chapter informs an aspect or two of the test-screening process and then, through behind-the-scenes stories, illustrates how that particular aspect was carried out. Nicknamed “the doctor of audience-ology,” Kevin Goetz shares how he helped filmmakers and movie execs confront the misses and how he recommended ways to fix the blockbusters, as well as first-hand accounts from Ron Howard, Cameron Crowe, Ed Zwick, Renny Harlin, Jason Blum, and other Hollywood luminaries who brought you such films as La La Land, Chicago, Titanic, Wedding Crashers, Jaws, and Forrest Gump.
Audience-ology explores one of the most important (and most underrated) steps in the filmmaking process with enough humor, drama, and surprise to entertain those with only a spectator’s interest in film, offering us a new look at movie history. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781982186678

But 'heritage cinema' is all too often discussed from literary (not cinematic) perspectives, and criticism of the films has long been overshadowed by the question of a film's fidelity to the original text. This volume of essays, reviews, and interviews seeks to redress this imbalance, by examining the often antagonistic relationship between literature and film - presenting both sides of the argument about whether heritage cinema's elaborate aesthetics owe more to nostalgia than to historical accuracy. In her challenging introduction to the volume, Ginette Vincendeau sketches the terms of the debate, arguing that the genre is an important, but often critically neglected, form of popular cinema. Film/Literature/Heritage, the latest in a series of 'Sight and Sound Readers', embraces a wide range of literary adaptation, from William Shakespeare to William Burroughs, covering films from Orlando to LA Confidential, and directors from Martin Scorcese to Peter Greenaway." - BOOK BLURBISBN: 0851708420; 0851708412(pbk.) : ¦13.99LON: 22285912

Maria Pramaggiore addresses this conundrum by examining Jordan's distinctive style across a surprisingly broad range of genres and production contexts, including horror and gangster films, Irish-themed movies, and Hollywood remakes. Despite the striking diversity of Jordan's films, the director consistently returns to gothic themes of loss, violence, and madness. In her sophisticated examination of Mona Lisa, Michael Collins, and The Good Thief, Pramaggiore shows how Jordan presents these dark narratives with a uniquely Irish and postmodern sense of irony. This illuminating analysis of one of the cinema's most important artists will be of keen interest to movie enthusiasts as well as students and scholars of contemporary film" -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Formerly CIP; Includes filmography: p. In recent years, this has changed dramatically. The undead are fast and ferocious in 28 Days Later… (2002) and World War Z (2013). In Warm Bodies (2013) and In the Flesh (2013–2015), they are thoughtful, sensitive and capable of empathy. These sometimes radically different depictions of the undead (and the still living) suggest critical inquiries: What does it mean to be human? What makes a monster? Who survives the zombie apocalypse, and why? Focusing on classic and current movies and TV shows, the author reveals how the once-subversive modern zombie, now more popular than ever, has been co-opted by the mainstream culture industry. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 978147666730Contents: Acknowledgments -- Preface: Dawn of a Zombie Scholar -- Introduction: The Shifting Culture of the Modern Zombie -- 1. It shows how Bollywood cinema has always crossed borders and boundaries: from the British Malaya, Fiji, Guyana, Trinidad, Mauritius, and East and South Africa to the former USSR, West Asia, the UK, the USA, Canada, and Australia. While looking at the meanings of nation, diaspora, home, and identity in cinematic texts and contexts, the essays also examine how localities are produced in the new global process by broadly addressing nationalism, regionalism, and transnationalism, politics, and aesthetics, as well as spectatorship and viewing contexts." -- BOOK JACKETNotes: Formerly CIP; Includes bibliographical referencesISBN: 0198075987; 9780198075981Contents: pt. 1 Modernity, Globalization, Globality -- 1.Bollywood, Postcolonial Transformation, and Modernity / Bill Ashcroft -- 2.Cultural Flows, Travelling Shows: Bombay Talkies, Global Times / Makarand Paranjape -- 3.Mustard Fields, Exotic Tropes, and Travels through Meandering Pathways: Reframing the Yash Raj Trajectory / Madhuja Mukherjee -- pt. 2 Love Across the Border -- 4.The Lahore Film Industry: A Historical Sketch / Ishtiaq Ahmed -- 5.From Chandigarh to Vancouver: Reimagining Home and Identity in the Films of Harbhajan Mann / Nicola Mooney -- 6.Bollywood, Tollywood, Dollywood: Re-visiting Cross-border Flows and the Beat of the 1970s in the Context of Globalization / Anuradha Ghosh 7.
