This study is divided into two parts and locates the (postmodern) Gothic in twelve Australian/New Zealand films ranging from Ted Kotcheffs Wake in Fright (1971) to Peter Jacksons Heavenly Creatures (1994). Part one theorizes the Gothic as a subversive cultural mode that foreshadows postmodernism in terms of its antithetical relationship with Enlightenment ideals. Interconnections are made between proto-postmodern aspects of early Gothic literature and the appropriation and intensification of these aspects in what has been dubbed the postmodern Gothic. The dissertation then argues that the Antipodes was/is constructed through Euro-centric discourse(s) as a Gothic/(proto)-postmodern space or place, this construction manifest in, and becoming intertwined with the postmodern in post 1970s Antipodean cinema. In part two, a cross-section of Australian/New Zealand films is organized into cinematic sub-genres in line with their similar thematic preoccupations and settings, all films argued as reflecting a marked postmodern Gothic sensibility. In its conclusion, the study finds that S2Antipodean Gothic cinemaS3, particularly since the 1970s, can be strongly characterized by its combining of Gothic/postmodernist modes of representation, this convergence constitutive of a postmodernized version of the Gothic which is heavily influenced by Euro-centric constructions of the Antipodes in Gothic/(proto)-postmodern related terms. - Provides vibrant textual studies of under-evaluated Australian international pictures
- Develops an understanding of international film production in the years following WWII and before the Australian film revival of the 1970s
- Corrects the perception that there was no significant feature film production in Australia after the 1930s and before the revival
- Offers background and important precedents for the more recent practices of global co-productions and ‘Hollywood Down-under’
Australian International Pictures examines the concept and definition of Australian film in relation to a range of local, international and global practices and trends that blur neat categorisations of national cinema. Although international co-production is particularly acute in the present day, this book examines the porous nature of Australian International filmmaking, and the intriguing transnational and cross-cultural formations created by globally targeted but locally focussed films made in Australia in the period 1946–75. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780748693061Contents: Acknowledgements -- 1. (US/GW, Ted Kotcheff, 1978) ; WAKE IN FRIGHT (AT, Ted Kotcheff, 1971) Summary: With six decades in show business, legendary director Ted Kotcheff looks back on his life
Born to immigrant parents and raised in the slums of Toronto during the Depression, Ted Kotcheff learned storytelling on the streets before taking a stagehand job at CBC Television. Discovering his skills with actors and production, Kotcheff went on to direct some of the greatest films of the freewheeling 1970s, including The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Wake in Fright, and North Dallas Forty. After directing the 1980s blockbusters First Blood and Weekend at Bernie’s, Kotcheff helped produce the groundbreaking TV show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. During his career, he was declared a Communist by the U.S. government, banned from the Royal Albert Hall in London, and coped with assassination threats on one of his lead actors.
With his seminal films enjoying a critical renaissance, including praise from Martin Scorsese and Nick Cave, Kotcheff now turns the lens on himself. Witty and fearless, Director’s Cut is not just a memoir, but also a close-up on life and craft, with stories of his long friendship with Mordecai Richler and working with stars like Sylvester Stallone, James Mason, Gregory Peck, Ingrid Bergman, Gene Hackman, Jane Fonda, and Richard Dreyfuss, as well as advice on how to survive the slings and arrows of Hollywood. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781770413610

Screen memories : Hollywood cinema on the psychoanalytic couch / Harvey Roy Greenberg New York: Columbia University Press, 1993.
Call No: 626:159.964.2 GREAuthor: Greenberg, Harvey R Place: New YorkPublisher: Columbia University PressPubDate: 1993PhysDes: 277 p. : ill. ; 24 cmSubject: PSYCHOANALYSIS AND THE CINEMA ; CASABLANCA (US, Michael Curtiz, 1942) ; MALTESE FALCON, THE (US, John Huston, 1941) ; RED DAWN (US, John Milius, 1984) ; FIRST BLOOD (US, Ted Kotcheff, 1982) ; PSYCHO (US, Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) ; ALIEN (UK, Ridley Scott, 1979) ; BOSTONIANS, THE (UK/US, James Ivory, 1984) ; ALWAYS (US, Steven Spielberg, 1989) ; ENEMIES, A LOVE STORY (US, Paul Mazursky, 1989) ; WORKING GIRL (US, Mike Nichols, 1988) Summary: Screen Memories delves into the psychological aspects of mainstream American movies ranging from Casablanca to Working Girl. While most psychoanalytic film criticism is highly theoretical, Greenberg writes in a candid, entertaining style that will appeal to cineasts and scholars alike. Beginning with a basic overview of psychoanalytic film criticism, Greenberg directs his focus on characters, motivations, and conflicts in detective, war, science fiction, and horror movies, as well as cult cinema. In "On the McMovie," he probes the hollow, escapist fare that emerged from Hollywood in the 1970s and 1980s and embraced nearly every genre. Greenberg zooms in on the pathological narcissism of heroes in such McMovies as Rambo and Top Gun; Screen Memories concludes by addressing two important films of the late 1980s. Greenberg decries Working Girl as a "Co-opt" film with a seemingly liberal agenda, which nevertheless mocks and subverts the very social advances it appears to affirm. But Enemies: A Love Story - with its humor, manic energy, and theme of renewal in the teeth of death - is seen as evidence of a tentative but hopeful return to quality in HollywoodNotes: Includes bibliographical references (p. Others called it “the new rock ‘n’ roll”. Whatever it was, it spawned “The Young Ones”. Comedy changed on the 9th November 1982 when Rick, Vyvyan, Neil and Mike infiltrated the safe world of the television sitcom. They farted, swore, hit each other and shouted a lot and comedy hasn’t been the same since. They weren’t nice; they were NASTY! This is the story of the conception and birth of “The Young Ones”, their ancestors, their playmates and, eventually, their offspring.
