This compelling study corrects such omissions by detailing the theory and practice of alternative adaptation practices from major avant-garde directors. Avant-Garde films are often relegated to the margins because they challenge our traditional notions of what film form and style can accomplish. Directors who choose to adapt previous material run the risk of severe critical dismay; making films that are highly subjective interpretations or representations of existing texts takes courage and foresight. An avant-garde adaptation provokes spectators by making them re-think what they know about film itself, just as much as the previous source material.Adaptation and the Avant-Garde examines films by Peter Greenaway, Jean-Luc Godard, Guy Maddin, Jan Svankmajer and many others, offering illuminating insights and making us reconsider the nature of adaptation, appropriation, borrowing, and the re-imagining of previous sources. -- extract taken from the back of the book. --Notes: Formerly CIP. --

Several landmark films are covered here in lively examinations of the art of successful cinematic adaptation, covering children's literature from the Victorian age to the present - from Tom Brown's Schooldays to A Hero Ain't Nothing but a Sandwich [...] This is the first book to devote itself exclusively to film adaptations of children's classics. All the writers are equally at home in children's fiction and film studies. Their essays, with one exception, were especially prepared for this volume. All together, a rewarding look at old and new favourites in literature and the movies, and at the elements that have made them lastingly successful." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Filmography: p. 253-273; Bibliography: p. 280-290ISBN: 0804428409 : $14.95; 0804468834 (pbk.) : $6.95LON: 83014816; 2808775

That question and others are explored in this first comprehensive collection of essays on novel into film adaptations - from Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans (1826) to Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury (1929). Over two thirds of these essays were written expressly for this volume, the work of a new generation of literature-trained but film-oriented teachers and critics. Together they examine how novels and their film adaptations differ from one another in technique, characterisation, scope, and ideological content. To the original essays the editors have added some of the best available writings on adaptations by such critics as Stanley Kauffman and Manny Farber, plus selected commentaries from the actual participants in the process of adaptations - screenwriters and film directors." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; Filmography: p. 321-336; Bibliography: p. 337-344ISBN: 0804426813 : $12.50. 0804466475 pbk. : $4.95LON: qum00211939; 12437055 857055

It looks at you : the returned gaze of cinema / Wheeler Winston Dixon Albany: State University of New York Press, 1995.
Call No: 632.53 DIXAuthor: Dixon, Wheeler W., 1950 Place: AlbanyPublisher: State University of New York PressPubDate: 1995PhysDes: xv, 238 p. : ill. ; 24 cmSeries: SUNY series in postmodern cultureSubject: GAZE IN FILMS ; UTOPIA IN FILMS ; INTERACTIVE CINEMA ; WARHOL, ANDY ; BRAKHAGE, STAN ; GUY-BLACHE, ALICE ; VINYL (US, Andy Warhol, 1965?) Summary: This book is a study of one of the most insidious and pervasive phenomena in the study and reception of cinema: the "returned gaze" from the screen in which the audience is actually surveilled by the film being projected on the screen. Rather than the usual process of watching a film, in those films which return the gaze of the viewer, the film looks at us, confronting our voyeur's embrace of the spectacle it presents. The book cites examples as diverse as Andy Warhol's Vinyl, Laurel and Hardy two-reel comedies, the films of Jean-Marie Straub, Jean-Luc Godard, Roberto Rossellini, and Wesley E. Barry's Creation of The Humanoids. It also discusses the history of the returned gaze in video, pornography, surveillance systems, and the related plastic artsNotes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 203-226) and indexISBN: 0791423409 (pbk.); 0791423395LON: 10868713

Unapologetically surrealist. Svankmajer draws on the traditions and techniques of stop-motion animation, collage, montage, puppetry, and clay to craft bizarre filmscapes.... In Johnson's view, Svankmajer implores us to reprogram our relationship with the vital matter all around us, including ourselves and our bodies." - BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references (pages 177-185) and index.

Life to those shadows / by Noe¨l Burch ; translated and edited by Ben Brewster Berkeley: University of California Press, 1990.
Call No: 62 BURAuthor: Burch, Noe¨l ; Brewster, Ben Source: USPlace: BerkeleyPublisher: University of California PressPubDate: 1990PhysDes: 317 pages : illustrations ; 23 cmSubject: THEORY ; BURCH, NOEL ; HISTORY OF CINEMA. His major thesis is that, on the contrary, film language has a social and economic history, that it evolved in the way it did because of when and where it was constructed - in the capitalist and imperialist west between 1892 and 1929. The book examines the chronology of the emergence of what it defines as cinema's Institutional Mode of Representation and the socio-historical circumstances in which this took place. It examines the principles of visualisation - camera placement and movement, lighting, editing, mise-en-scene - that film-makers and audiences came to internalize over the first three decades. Special emphasis is laid on the all-important change that occurred in the imaginary placing of the spectator, from a position of exteriority to the film image, implicit in both film-form and viewing conditions during the primitive era (pre-1909), to the imaginary centering of the spectator-subject, completed only with the generalisation of lip-synch sound after 1929. It is the contention of this book that this imaginary centering of a sensorily isolated spectator is the keystone of the cinematic illustion of reality, still achieved today by the same means as it was sixty years ago." - taken from back coverNotes: Revised versions of papers written 1976-1981, some of which have appeared in English and French magazines -- Includes bibliographical references (p. 274-283) and index -- Filmography: p. 284-305.ISBN: 0520071441Contents: Introduction -- Charles Baudelaire versus Doctor Frankenstein -- Life to Those Shadows -- The Wrong Side of the Tracks -- Those Gentlemen of the Lantern and the Parade -- Business is Business: An Invisible Audience -- Passions and Chases-A Certain Linearisation -- Building a Haptic Space -- A Primitive Mode of Representation? -- The Motionless Voyage: Constitution of The Ubiquitous Subject -- Beyond the Peephole, the Logos -- Narrative, Diegesis: Thresholds, Limits -- Conclusion -- Bibliography -- Filmography -- Index

The queens of animation : the untold story of the women who transformed the world of Disney and made cinematic history / Nathalia Holt New York: Back Bay Books,

From Snow White to Moana, from Pinocchio to Frozen, the animated films of Walt Disney Studios have moved and entertained millions. But few fans know that behind these groundbreaking features was an incredibly influential group of women who fought for respect in an often ruthless male-dominated industry and who have slipped under the radar for decades.
In The Queens of Animation, bestselling author Nathalia Holt tells their dramatic stories for the first time, showing how these women infiltrated the boys' club of Disney's story and animation departments and used early technologies to create the rich artwork and unforgettable narratives that have become part of the American canon. As the influence of Walt Disney Studios grew — and while battling sexism, domestic abuse, and workplace intimidation — these women also fought to transform the way female characters are depicted to young audiences.
With gripping storytelling, and based on extensive interviews and exclusive access to archival and personal documents, The Queens of Animation reveals the vital contributions these women made to Disney's Golden Age and their continued impact on animated filmmaking, culminating in the record-shattering Frozen, Disney's first female-directed full-length feature film. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780316439145Contents: Preface -- Timeline -- One day when we were young -- Whistle while you work -- When you wish upon a star -- Waltz of the flowers -- Little April shower -- Baby mine -- Aquarela do Brasil -- You're in the army now -- Zip-a-dee-doo-dah -- So this is love -- In a world of my own -- You can fly! -- Once upon a dream -- Dalmatian plantation -- It's a small world -- Up, down, touch the ground -- Part of your world -- I'll make a man out of you -- For the first time in forever -- Happily ever after -- Acknowledgements -- Notes -- Index.

CARROLL, LEWIS Summary: Since the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, Lewis Carroll’s Alice has delighted children and adults alike. However, this girl-hero was always destined for life beyond the page.
From silent film to animation, she has been portrayed many times and continues to inspire. Wonderland follows Alice’s journey from page to screen, from 1903’s silent Alice in Wonderland to her first talking film in 1931, to Tim Burton’s recent blockbusters. It celebrates the endurance of Carroll’s stories and characters, and the remarkable technological innovations that have enabled filmmakers to continually reimagine Alice.
Tracing Alice’s evolution on screen, Wonderland is a journey down the rabbit hole and into an enchanted world where expectations are upended and curiosity rewarded. -- publisher's web siteNotes: This publication is produced in partnership with Senses of CinemaISBN: 9780500501177
