This collection serves as an introduction and a guide to Borowczyk’s complex and ambiguous body of work, including panoramic views of the director’s output, focused studies of particular movies, and more personal, impressionistic pieces. Taken together, these contributions comprise a wide-ranging survey that is markedly experimental in character, allowing scholars to gain insight into previously unnoticed aspects of Borowczyk’s oeuvre. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781782387015Contents: CONTENTS

Christophe Honore : A critical introduction / David A. Gerstner and Julien Nahmias Detroit, Michigan: Wayne State University Press, 2015.
Call No: 81 HON GERAuthor: Gerstner, David A. ; Nahmias, Julien Edition: 2015Place: Detroit, MichiganPublisher: Wayne State University PressPubDate: 2015PhysDes: 256, xiv p. ; illus. ; 23 cmSeries: Contemporary approaches to film and media seriesSubject: HONORE, CHRISTOPHE ; DANS PARIS (FR, Christophe Honore, 2006) ; CHANSONS D'AMOUR (FR, Christophe Honore, 2007) ; BELLE PERSONNE, LA (FR, Christophe Honore, 2008) Summary: French filmmaker Christophe Honoré challenges audiences with complex cinematic form, intricate narrative structures, and aesthetically dynamic filmmaking. But the limited release of his films outside of Europe has left him largely unknown to U.S. audiences. In Christophe Honoré: A Critical Introduction, authors David A. Gerstner and Julien Nahmias invite English-speaking scholars and cinéastes to explore Honoré’s three most recognized films, Dans Paris (2006), Les Chansons d’amour (2007), and La Belle personne (2008)—"the trilogy." Gerstner and Nahmias analyze Honoré’s filmmaking as the work of a queer auteur whose cinematic engagement with questions of family, death, and sexual desire represent new ground for queer theory.
Considering each of the trilogy films in turn, the authors take a close look at Honoré’s cinematic technique and how it engages with France’s contemporary cultural landscape. With careful attention to the complexity of Honoré’s work, they consider critically contested issues such as the filmmaker’s cinematic strategies for addressing AIDS, the depth of his LGBTQ politics, his representations of death and sexual desire, and the connections between his films and the New Wave. Anchored by a comprehensive interview with the director, the authors incorporate classical and contemporary film theories to offer a range of cinematic interventions for thinking queerly about the noted film author.
Christophe Honoré: A Critical Introduction reconceptualizes the relationship between film theory and queer theory by moving beyond predominant literary and linguistic models, focusing instead on cinematic technique. Students and teachers of queer film will appreciate this thought-provoking volume. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780814338636

AMOUR DE SWANN, UN ; AMOUR DE SWANN, UN (FR/GW, Volker Schlondorff, 1984) Summary: ...Refuting the commonly held view that film adaptations are in most ways inferior to the works on which thay are based, the author contendsthat film is an art eminently capable of translating a novel, not only in plot and theme but in style, technique and effect. And it can also do so without destroying the original work... or emerging as a second-rate version of the printed word.
Providing a close-up study of the ways in which adaptation may serve as a successful, even superlative, interpretation of literature, Double Exposure examines the aesthetics, the history, and the contemporaryresults of moviemakers' use of fiction in film. Here is an eye-opening of contemporary films that succeed, fail, or even transcend their literary source when two parallel art forms join forces at the movie. Godard's own persona - cultural hero, fierce loner, shrewd businessman - projects similarly shifting images. In the modern canon, he is a figure as mysterious as he is indispensible. Now, acclaimed critic Richard Brody offers the fullest picture yet of Godard's life and work, demsytifying the elusive filmmaker through hundreds of interviews with friends, relatives, and collaborators. He vividly depicts Godard's wealthy family, his changeable and often disturbing politics, his tumultuous dealings with fellow filmmakers, and his troubled relations with women. Tracing an arc from the director's early writing, through his popular success with Breathless and Contempt, to the grand vision of his later years, Everything Is Cinema shows decisively that Godard's films have left their mark on all screens, everywhere. -- BOOK BLURBNotes: "NBCC Award. It is the first book to cover the whole of Godard's career, from the early successes of the French New Wave, through the political works of the late 1960s and 1970s and the difficult films of the 1980s, to the recent triumphs of Histoire(s) du cinema and Eloge de l'amour. Drawing on a wide range of literary, filmic and philosophical texts, the book places Godard's work within its intellectual context in France, examining how developments in French culture and thought since 1950 have been mirrored in - and sometimes anticipated by - Godard's films. At the same time, numerous sequences from Godard's films are singled out for close analysis in order to demonstrate how the director's radical approaches to narrative, editing, sound and shot composition have made the cinema into an analytical tool in its own right - a machine for thinking. The book will be useful to all students of Godard's films, and of interest to scholars of modern and contemporary French cinema, culture and thought. Through detailed analysis of aspects of stillness and silence in cinema, Lim delineates the strategies by which slowness in film can be constructed. By drawing on writings on cinephilia and the films of directors such as Abbas Kiarostami, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Nuri Bilge Ceylan, he makes a passionate case for a slow cinema that calls for renewed attention to the image and to the experience of time in film." -- BOOK BLURBISBN: 9780824836849

Starting as an animator and director of visually rich kafkaesque fantasies (Blanche, Goto, Island of Love) he divided audiences by moving into graphic erotica (Immoral Tales, The Beast) and subsequently worked his way through exploitation tropes (nunsploitation, Jeksploitation, togasploitation) before creatively imploding spectacularly with his bizarre contribution to the Emmanuelle series.
Inspired in look and feel by seventies film and filth mags like Continental Film Review and Sex Stars System, the present author does not much value coherence or consistency. He is interested in contexts and connections, obscure minutiae, jokes (he will judge what is funny), and blurry screen grabs of topless women from seventies softcore flicks. Whilst not ideal, it's better than nothing. Probably. You figure it out. -- Back cover blurbISBN: 9780992302160Donation: Donated by The LedaTape Organisation (Collingwood)
