This compelling study corrects such omissions by detailing the theory and practice of alternative adaptation practices from major avant-garde directors. Avant-Garde films are often relegated to the margins because they challenge our traditional notions of what film form and style can accomplish. Directors who choose to adapt previous material run the risk of severe critical dismay; making films that are highly subjective interpretations or representations of existing texts takes courage and foresight. An avant-garde adaptation provokes spectators by making them re-think what they know about film itself, just as much as the previous source material.Adaptation and the Avant-Garde examines films by Peter Greenaway, Jean-Luc Godard, Guy Maddin, Jan Svankmajer and many others, offering illuminating insights and making us reconsider the nature of adaptation, appropriation, borrowing, and the re-imagining of previous sources. -- extract taken from the back of the book. --Notes: Formerly CIP. --

Circuit listening : Chinese popular music in the global 1960s / Andrew F. Jones Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2020.
Call No: 751.0 (5) JONAuthor: Jones, Andrew F. Edition: 2020Place: MinneapolisPublisher: University of Minnesota PressPubDate: 2020PhysDes: ix, 274 pages : illustratedSubject: CHINOISE, LA (FR, Jean-Luc Godard, 1967) ; CITY OF SADNESS, A [ ; TAIWAN ; DYLAN, BOB ; MUSIC IN FILMS ; SHAW BROTHERS Summary: What did Mao’s China have to do with the music of youth revolt in the 1960s? And how did the mambo, the Beatles, and Bob Dylan sound on the front lines of the Cold War in Asia? In Circuit Listening, Andrew F. Jones listens in on the 1960s beyond the West, and suggests how transistor technology, decolonization, and the Green Revolution transformed the sound of music around the globe.
Focusing on the introduction of the transistor in revolutionary China and its Cold War counterpart in Taiwan, Circuit Listening reveals the hidden parallels between music as seemingly disparate as rock and roll and Maoist anthems. It offers groundbreaking studies of Mandarin diva Grace Chang and the Taiwanese folk troubadour Chen Da, examines how revolutionary aphorisms from the Little Red Book parallel the Beatles’ “Revolution,” uncovers how U.S. military installations came to serve as a conduit for the dissemination of Anglophone pop music into East Asia, and shows how consumer electronics helped the pop idol Teresa Teng bring the Maoist era to a close, remaking the contemporary Chinese soundscape forever.
Circuit Listening provides a multifaceted history of Chinese-language popular music and media at midcentury. It profiles a number of the most famous and best loved Chinese singers and cinematic icons, and places those figures in a larger geopolitical and technological context. Circuit Listening’s original research and far-reaching ideas make for an unprecedented look at the role Chinese music played in the ’60s pop musical revolution. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781517902070Contents: Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction. In The Coen Brothers: This Book Really Ties the Films Together, film critic Adam Nayman carefully sifts through their complex cinematic universe in an effort to plot, as he puts it, “some Grand Unified Theory of Coen-ness.” The book combines critical text—biography, close film analysis, and enlightening interviews with key Coen collaborators—with a visual aesthetic that honors the Coens’ singular mix of darkness and levity. Featuring film stills, beautiful and evocative illustrations, punchy infographics, and hard insight, this book will be the definitive exploration of the Coen brothers’ oeuvre." - taken from publisher's website.Notes: Includes bibliographical references.ISBN: 9781419727405Contents: An introduction -- Out of nowhere -- Blood simple -- Raising Arizona -- Miller's crossing -- Interview: Michael Miller -- Barton Fink -- Hits and misses -- The hudsucker proxy -- Fargo -- Interview: The Zellner Brothers -- The Big Lebowski -- Interview: Lisa Walker -- Can't stop what's coming -- O brother, where are thou? -- The man who wasn't there -- Interview: Carter Burwell -- Intolerable cruelty -- The ladykillers -- Mysterious ways -- No country for old men -- Interview: Roger Deakins -- Tuillries & world cinema -- Burn after reading -- A serious man -- Interview: J. The Marx Brothers scrapbook / Groucho Marx and Richard J. Anobile London: W.H. Allen, 1974.
Call No: 82 MARAuthor: Marx, Groucho ; Anobile, Richard J. Source: UKPlace: LondonPublisher: W.H. AllenPubDate: 1974PhysDes: 256 p. : ill. ; 29 cmSubject: MARX BROTHERS ; MARX, GROUCHO Summary: "Nobody could follow the Marx Bros. It was impossible! Jack Benny talks about his encounter with the Marx Bros. whose act he tried to follow on stage during a vaudeville tour. And the Marx Bros.still go it strong in this unique book, as Groucho, Gummo and Zeppo talk about themselves, each other, and everyone else with whom they were involved on and off stage for 45 years in vaudeville, the theater, and finally (when they were all forty and famous) in movies. Now for the first time, Groucho Marx, at age 83, recalls it all - from butcher shop to the fabulous years on the screen. Exclusive and extended interviews between Groucho and Richard J. Anobile are the heart of the story and there are supplementary interviews with Gummo and Zeppo Marx as well as other performers, writers and directors associated with the Marx Brothers.
Zeppo, on the team: "I ended up doing something I didn't want to do and it got to the point where I had to get out or else wind up with a nervous breakdown."
Gummo, on Chico: "Chico's friends were producers who gambled, actors who gambled, and women who screwed."
Susan Marx, of her 28-year marriage with Harpo: "I made him laugh and he made me laugh. We had fun. He was the kindest man. The kindest man." And of Groucho: "He has driven three wives to drink, not to mention his children."
Candor is just one element of this fascinating book. For the first time in print the reader is treated to a comprehensive, vivid, and hilarious account of the early years of the Marx Bros. They shared the stage with stars like Sarah Bernhardt, Jack Benny, Will Rogers and W C Fields. And finally the films, on which their fame will ride for all time. Groucho especially talks about 'A Night at the Opera" and the brothers respect and admiration for the man responsible for that film, Irving G. Thalberg.
But again, something differrent in this book: accounts of what it was like to work with them, by such men as George Seaton (in an interview that will delight every movie buff who can read), Robert Florey, Morrie Ryskind, Arthur Sheekman, Nat Perrin and others. -BOOK JACKETISBN: 0491012926Donation: donated by the family of Wayne Levy, 2006Contents: -- Contents-- Chapter 1 -- Groucho page 11 -- Gummo page 19 -- Photos page 26 -- Chapter 2 -- Groucho page 39 -- Jack Benny page 43 -- Photos page 47 -- England, 1922 page 54 -- Chapter 3 -- Groucho page 72 -- Morrrie Ryskind page 78 -- Photos page 84 -- Chapter 4 -- Groucho page 111 -- Robert Florey page 115 -- Photos page 118 -- England, 1931 page 142 -- Chapter 5 -- Groucho page 146 -- Harry Ruby page 152 -- Arthur Sheekman page 154 -- Photos 157 -- Chapter 6 -- Groucho page 172 -- Zeppo page 174 -- Chapter 7 -- Susan Marx page 177 -- Alexander Woollcott and Harpo Letters page 183 -- Photos page 200 -- Chapter 8 -- Groucho page 202 -- Harry and Morrie Guss page 207 -- George Seaton page 208 -- Nat Perrin page 212 -- Photos 215 -- Photos of the Stateroom scene page 223 -- Photos of The Tutsie-Fruitsie scene page 235 -- Photos page 241 -- Chapter 9 -- Groucho page 251 -- Index page 254

Unlike previous collected volumes about pop music in film, where a generalised approach has been adopted, it offers instead a close examination of these two most pervasive and significant mediums in contemporary culture.
"The collection introspects, assembling the pop song into various guises and documenting how individuals dissemble the multiple roles that the pop song plays in all and one audio-visual moment. The song as: ghost, role-play, memory trigger, narrator, marketing device, translator, alienator, membership rite, etc." (Taken from the back cover)Notes: Includes indexISBN: 184150078X

The paradoxes and imagination evident in their films were shared by a modern Hong Kong society taking shape throughout the decades. But there's one motif threading their productions - "entertainment first". The book explores the working of film genres, the studio and star systems inside the Shaw film empire and offers a window to re-examining the interaction between films and the time. Why a duck? : visual and verbal gems from the Marx Brothers movies / Introduction by Groucho Marx / Edited by Richard J. Anobile / Preface by Richard F. Shepherd New York: Darien House, 1971.
Call No: 81MAR ANOSource: USPlace: New YorkPublisher: Darien HousePubDate: 1971PhysDes: 288 p. : chiefly ill. ; 29 cm.Subject: MARX BROTHERS ; MARX, GROUCHO Summary: "Here it is: a book of visual and verbal gems from the Marx Brothers movies - a unique film book which may very well revolutionize the presentation of film material in book form. It does for the Marx Brothers what no other volume about them has ever achieved - as direct a transition from film to book page as is humanly possible" -BOOK JACKET
"An ambitious book that lets you enjoy nine great comic films in the comfort of your own home. In addition, Groucho himself has written what can only be considered the last word on Marx Brothers films, a kind of pastoral-comical-sociological treatise on the cinemalosophy of screen comedy. (And if you believe that, you'll belive anything.)" -BOOK JACKETISBN: 0821203738Donation: donated by the family of Wayne Levy, 2006
