This compelling study corrects such omissions by detailing the theory and practice of alternative adaptation practices from major avant-garde directors. Avant-Garde films are often relegated to the margins because they challenge our traditional notions of what film form and style can accomplish. Directors who choose to adapt previous material run the risk of severe critical dismay; making films that are highly subjective interpretations or representations of existing texts takes courage and foresight. An avant-garde adaptation provokes spectators by making them re-think what they know about film itself, just as much as the previous source material.Adaptation and the Avant-Garde examines films by Peter Greenaway, Jean-Luc Godard, Guy Maddin, Jan Svankmajer and many others, offering illuminating insights and making us reconsider the nature of adaptation, appropriation, borrowing, and the re-imagining of previous sources. -- extract taken from the back of the book. --Notes: Formerly CIP. --

The bestselling author David Bret traces the development of Presley's film career and recounts the on-set cat fights with co-stars and studio personnel. He unearths the truth about the powerful hold exercised over Elvis by 'Colonel' Tom Parker, which revolved around Parker preventing a leak about Presley's relationship with another man from going public and then using this knowledge as a persistant threat to ensure his protege's loyalty.
Bret explores and hotly disputes the controversial allegations, levelled by Presley's step-family, that he had sex with his mother, raped his wife, held debauched, drug fuelled parties with groupies and eventually committed suicide. Above all, the author praises the nature and talent of the man who was - and still is - the supreme authority on rock'n'roll and romance. AUSTRALIA Summary: Over the last decade popular cinema has employed a variety of forms of music. These include traditional composed screen music, pre-recorded music tracks, mixes of music and sound effects and various combinations of these. In response to this, film music scholars have developed new ways of understanding and analysing the role of film music in relation to genre, narrative and creative roles and inter-relations in film music scoring. 'Reel Tracks' provides a series of insightful analyses of recent mainstream Australian cinema. Following the editor's careful exploration of film music's relation to national cinema culture and identity, individual chapters offer stimulating and diverse accounts of music in films such as Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002), Lantana (2001), Chopper (2000) and Paradise Road (1997). The chapters in this volume also address broader themes such as the musical representation of sexuality in cinema and music's representation of regions, localities and ethnicity. Reel Tracks is an important contribution to both Australian film studies and the international understanding of the role of music in contemporary western cinema. This volume is targeted to both cinema studies readers and film music students, teachers and aficionados. It recreates for us movies we've come to love: movies the way they were when, in 1934, four in particular - IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, TWENTIETH CENTURE, THE THIN MAN, and THE GAY DIVORCEE - heralded the arrival of the golden age of Hollywood romantic ("screwball") comedy. Over the next ten years, some of Hollywood's brightest directors and stars turned out some of America's most enduring and beloved films. The screwballs - slangy, irreverent, playful, skeptical, and "powerfully, glamorously in love with love" - constitute a genre of American film unique in its combination of the innocent and the worldly, of swank and slapstick. Now critic James Harvey - writing with brilliance and humor - gives us the first truly comprehensive book about these movies and the people who made them."
