Wagner traces how old and new films set in Berlin created a collective urban nostalgia for the city's best and most conciliatory pasts in the face of its renewed prupose as the all-German capital. Exploring films such as Walter Ruttmann's Berlin: Symphony of a Great City, Wim Wenders's wings of Desire, Tom Tykwer's Run Lola Run, and Wolfgang Becker's Good Bye, Lenin!, the book illustrates how film has repeatedly remade the image of the city. Wagner focuses on four key periods: the golden 1920s, when the city was a major filmmaking center; the prewall 1950s, when Berlin had two idealogically opposed film industries; the politically transformative late 1980s and early 1990s; and the hyped start of the twenty-first century." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references and indexISBN: 9780816691746Donation: donated by Senses of CinemaContents: Introduction: Auf wiedersehen, Berlin! -- Remake: Berlin symphonies and the myth of the weltstadt -- Generation: a 1950s place for us -- Virtuality: cinema, archive, and the interactive map of Potsdamer Platz -- Orientation: geographical didacticism and the X-films of new Berlin -- Epilogue: Berlin returns, again

The films are 'The Man From Snowy River', 'Sunday Too Far Away', 'We of the Never Never', 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' and 'The Plains of Heaven'. These five texts are examined in light of feminist theories dealing with subjectivity and representation. The analysis of the place and role of femininity within the texts is conducted through the examination of symbols and metaphors associated with the landscape which operate within the film structure. The thesis concludes that the Australian landscape is constructed within these films in such a way as to support the concept of a white, masculine Australian identity..." -- taken from summaryNotes: Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, Centre for Womens Studies; Summary: [unpaged] at front of text; Typescript; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 104-110)LON: abn93171145; 10039377Contents: 1. Why has the relationship between the nation and film become so widely and uncritically accepted? Theorising National Cinema is a major contribution to work on national cinemas, by many of the leading scholars in the filed. It addresses the knotty and complex relationships between cinema and national identity, showing that the nationality of a cinema production company, and of the films it made, have not always been seen as pertinent. The volume begins by reviewing and rethinking the concept of national cinema in an age of globalisation, and it goes on to chart the parallel developments of national film industries and the idea of the nation state in countries as diverse as Japan, South Korea, Russia, France and Italy. The issue of a 'national cinema' for nation states of contested status, with disputed borders or displaced peoples, is discussed in relation to film-making in Taiwan, Ireland and Palestine. The contributors also consider the future of national cinema in an age of transnational cultural flows, exploring issues of national identity and cinema in Latin America, Asia, the Middle-East, India, Africa and Europe.ISBN: 1844571203
