Analyses what makes an acting performance excellent, through a range of examples from world cinema. What actors do on-screen is a fascination for audiences all over the world. Indeed, the cultural visibility of movie stars is so pronounced that stardom has often been regarded as intrinsic to the medium's specificity. Yet not all great cinematic performances are star turns, and so, what really makes a cinematic performance good, interesting, or important has been a neglected topic in film criticism. This two-volume set presents detailed interpretations of singular performances by several of the most compelling actors in cinema history, asking in many different and complementary ways what makes performance meaningful, how it reflects a director's style, as well as how it contributes to the development of national cinemas and cultures. Whether noting the precise ways actors shape film narrative, achieve emotional effect, or move toward political subversion, the essays in these books innovate new approaches to studying screen performance as an art form and cultural force"--Page 4 of cover.Notes: Includes bibliographical references and index.ISBN: 9781474417006Contents: Intro -- Acknowledgments -- Close-up: great American performances -- Chapter 1 Ethel Waters in The Member of the Wedding -- Chapter 2 Irene Dunne in The Awful Truth -- Chapter 3 Cary Grant in His Girl Friday -- Chapter 4 Janet Gaynor in Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans -- Chapter 5 Katharine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter -- Chapter 6 Bette Davis in Dangerous -- Chapter 7 James Stewart in Vertigo -- Chapter 8 Carole Lombard in To Be or Not to Be -- Chapter 9 James Mason in Lolita -- Chapter 10 Montgomery Clift in A Place in the Sun -- Chapter 11 Tony Curtis in Sweet Smell of Success.

A piece of the action : race and labor in post-civil rights Hollywood / Eithne Quinn New York: Columbia University Press, 2020.
Call No: 744.6(73) QUIAuthor: Quinn, Eithne Edition: 2020Place: New YorkPublisher: Columbia University PressPubDate: 2020PhysDes: x, 278 pages : illustrations ; 24cmSubject: RACIAL ISSUES AND THE CINEMA ; BLACK FILMMAKERS. US ; POITIER, SIDNEY ; DAVIS, OSSIE ; VAN PEEBLES, MELVIN ; IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (US, Norman Jewison, 1967) ; SWEET SWEETBACK'S BAADASSSSS SONG (US, Melvin Van Peebles, 1971) ; SUPER FLY (US, Gordon Parks Jr., 1972) ; BLUE COLLAR (US, Paul Schrader, 1978) Summary: Hollywood is often thought of—and certainly by Hollywood itself—as a progressive haven. However, in the decade after the passage of the Civil Rights Act, the film industry grew deeply conservative when it came to conflicts over racial justice. Amid black self-assertion and white backlash, many of the most heated struggles in film were fought over employment. In A Piece of the Action, Eithne Quinn reveals how Hollywood catalyzed wider racial politics, through representation on screen as well as in battles over jobs and resources behind the scenes.
Based on extensive archival research and detailed discussions of films like In the Heat of the Night, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, Super Fly, Claudine, and Blue Collar, this volume considers how issues of race and labor played out on the screen during the tumultuous early years of affirmative action. Quinn charts how black actors leveraged their performance capital to force meaningful changes to employment and film content. She examines the emergence of Sidney Poitier and other African Americans as A-list stars; the careers of black filmmakers such as Melvin Van Peebles and Ossie Davis; and attempts by the federal government and black advocacy groups to integrate cinema. Quinn also highlights the limits of Hollywood’s liberalism, showing how predominantly white filmmakers, executives, and unions hid the persistence of racism behind feel-good stories and public-relations avowals of tolerance. A rigorous analysis of the deeply rooted patterns of racial exclusion in American cinema, A Piece of the Action sheds light on why conservative and corporate responses to antiracist and labor activism remain pervasive in today’s Hollywood. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780231164375

Screening the male : exploring masculinities in Hollywood cinema / edited by Steven Cohan and Ina Rae Hark London New York: Routledge, 1993.

Gathering together thirteen original essays by scholars in the US, UK, and Australia, as well as Steve Neale's ground-breaking article on the male spectacle, this collection looks beyong the seemingly unassailable monolithic understanding of the 'masculine' which has previously dominiated most film criticism.
Ranging from Valentino to Schwarzeneeger, from the musical to the horror film. from close readings to 'queer' readings, the essays all differ in their critical method and historical focus. But whatever their specific interest, each essay holds a strong concern with issues that film studies has repeatedly linked to the feminine without considering how they relate as well to the masculine: spectacle, masochism, passivity, masquerade and, most of all, the body as it signifies gendered, racial, class and generational differences." -- BOOK COVERNotes: Includes bibliographical references and indexesISBN: 0415077583; 0415077591 (pbk.)LON: 92005815; 8965703
