They rose again in the 1950s with a host of nightmarish creatures, re-created by Hammer Films. The emergent genre has been the significant major casualty of the persistent refusal to take English commercial films seriously and yet the horror film is the only cinematic myth which Britain can claim as its own. The English horror film has been emulated abroad but the essential English quality, that fine balance between eroticism and blatant sexuality, between an organic horror and the desire to shock or titillate, is usually lost. The specifically English character of the genre is rooted in the nature of the Gothic novels from which it has developed and the author traces the English fascinaion for horror from this literature to the birth and development of Hammer Films and its rivals.
