Titles covered were released between 1973 and 2010, a period coinciding with the revival of the long-dormant Australian film industry in the early 1970s, and continuing into the second wave of genre production spurred by the international success of the 2005 chiller Wolf Creek, The Cars That Ate Paris, The Last Wave, Roadgames, Razorback, Outback Vampires, Queen of the Damned, Black Water, and The Reef are among the titles represented. Each film is covered in a chapter that includes a cast and credits list, release information, contemporary reviews and DVD availability, as well as a synopsis and in-depth notes about the story, filmmaking techniques, acting performances, recurring themes and motifs, and overall effectiveness of the film as a work of horror. - Provides vibrant textual studies of under-evaluated Australian international pictures
- Develops an understanding of international film production in the years following WWII and before the Australian film revival of the 1970s
- Corrects the perception that there was no significant feature film production in Australia after the 1930s and before the revival
- Offers background and important precedents for the more recent practices of global co-productions and ‘Hollywood Down-under’
Australian International Pictures examines the concept and definition of Australian film in relation to a range of local, international and global practices and trends that blur neat categorisations of national cinema. Although international co-production is particularly acute in the present day, this book examines the porous nature of Australian International filmmaking, and the intriguing transnational and cross-cultural formations created by globally targeted but locally focussed films made in Australia in the period 1946–75. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780748693061Contents: Acknowledgements -- 1. Among the additions to this volume are in-depth treatments of the locations that feature prominently in the countries' cinema. Essays by leading critics and film scholars consider the significance of films of the outback and the beach, which is evoked as a liminal space in Long Weekend and a symbol of death in Heaven's Burning, among other films. Other contributions turn the spotlight on previously unexplored genres and key filmmakers, including Jane Campion, Rolf de Heer, Charles Chauvel, and Gillian Armstrong. Accompany the critical essays in this volume are more than 60 film reviews, complemented by full-colour film stills and significantly expanded references for further study. From The Piano to Red Dog, from Pictures to The Orator, Directory of World Cinema: Australia and New Zealand 2 completes this comprehensive treatment of two similar - but also different - and consistenly fascinating national cinemas." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes recommended reading; Includes filmographyISBN: 9781841506340Contents: Introduction: Australia -- Film of the Year -- Red Dog -- Festival Focus -- Brisbane International Film Festival -- Australian Film Locations -- Marketing Mix -- Finding International Audiences -- Star Study -- Errol Flynn -- Directors -- Jane Campion -- Arthur and Corrine Cantrill -- Ken G Hall -- Brian Trenchard Smith -- Action and Adventure -- Australian Animated Feature Films -- Comedian Comedy -- Crime -- Australian Gothic -- Horror -- Road Movie -- Science Fiction -- Thriller -- War -- The Australian Western -- Introduction: New Zealand -- Crossing the Ditch -- Directors -- Women Directors of Feature Films in New Zealand -- Annie Goldson -- Gaylene Preston -- Director Studies -- Costa Botes -- Yvonne Mackay -- Merata Mita -- Barry Barclay -- Christine Jeffs -- Experimental and Documentary Film -- Theatrical Documentary in New Zealand 2012 -- Genres of New Zealand Experimental Film -- 'Principled Patriotism' -- Emerging Asian New Zealand Film-makers in New Zealand Cinema

Not quite Mad Max : Brian Trenchard-Smith's Dead end drive-in in Studies in Australasian cinema (2009) vol.3 iss.3 p.309-320
Author: Johinke, Rebecca PhysDes: ArticleSubject: NATIONAL CULTURE AND THE CINEMA. AUSTRALIA ; DEAD END DRIVE-IN (AT, Brian Trenchard-Smith, 1986) Summary: This article suggests that Dead End Drive-In (1986), Brian Trenchard-Smith's little-known Ozploitation film, deserves reconsideration from Australasian film scholars because it offers a valuable contribution to discussions about Australian masculinity, car culture, phobic narratives and the White Australia Policy. It is argued that the drive-in as detention centre foreshadows later Australian anxieties about immigration and border protection. Clearly a phobic narrative full of white panic (Morris, 1989, 1998), it exhibits many of the anxieties about Australians and auto-immobility that Catherine Simpson (2006) discusses, and fits neatly into Tranter's (2003) discussion of cars and governance and Bode's (2006a) arguments about whiteness and Australian masculinity in crisis. -- Abstract

AUSTRALIA Summary: "The capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia, Sydney has been represented onscreen since the earliest days of cinema. An eclectic combination of tough inner-city suburbs, beachside communities, and green outlying exurbs, Sydney offers many intriguing possibilities to filmmakers. World Film Locations: Sydney takes readers on a virtual tour of Sydney to explore how representations in movies have both played into and influenced how we think of these spaces and those that frequent them." -- BOOK BLURBISBN: 9781783203628Contents: -- Maps/Scenes -- Scenes 1-8: 1919-1974 -- Scenes 9-16: 1975-1981 -- Scenes 17-24: 1982-1986 -- Scenes 25-32: 1992-1999 -- Scenes 33-39: 1999-2005 -- Scenes 40-46: 2006-2011 -- Essays -- Sydney: city of the imagination / Tina Kaufman -- The man from England: Brian Trenchard-Smith / Alexandra Heller-Nicholas -- The world behind the Coke sign / Jack Sargeant -- Life's a beach... / Deb Verhoeven -- Sojourner Sydney: looking from the outside / Jane Mills -- The phantasm of the opera: the Sydney Opera House / Gemma Blackwood -- Ubu films: Sydney's underground radical culture 1965 - 1972 / Lisa French -- resources -- contributor bios -- filmography
