This groundbreaking volume unifies decades of divergent work by film scholars and points the way towards a new theoretical framework for understanding fantasy in the context of popular film. While most equivalent studies aim to define national cinema as independent from or in competition with Hollywood, this collection explores a more porous set of relationships through the varied production, distribution and exhibition associations between Australia and the US. To explore this idea, the book investigates the influence that Australia has had on US cinema through the exportation of its stars, directors and other production personnel to Hollywood, while also charting the sustained influence of US cinema on Australia over the last hundred years. It takes two key points in time—the 1920s and 1930s and the last twenty years—to explore how particular patterns of localism, nationalism, colonialism, transnationalism and globalisation have shaped its course over the last century. The contributors re-examine the concept and definition of Australian cinema in regard to a range of local, international and global practices and trends that blur neat categorisations of national cinema. Although this concentration on US production, or influence, is particularly acute in relation to developments such as the opening of international film studios in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and the Gold Coast over the last thirty years, the book also examines a range of Hollywood financed and/or conceived films shot in Australia since the 1920s." -- BOOK BACK COVERNotes: Includes bibliographical references and indexISBN: 9783319666754Donation: Stephen GaunsonContents: -- 1 Where I'm Calling From: An American-Australian Cinema? / Peter C Kunze -- pt I Across the Pacific: Looking to America -- 2 Rudimentary Modernism: Ken G Hall, Rear-Projection and 1930s Hollywood / Adrian Danks -- 3 Simulated Scenery: Travel Cinema, Special Effects and For the Term of His Natural Life / Leslie DeLassus -- 4 Representations and Hybridizations in First Nation Cinema: Change and Newness by Fusion / Jane Mills -- 5 Of Mothers and Madwomen: Mining the Emotional Terrain of Toni Collette's Anti-Star Persona / Fincina Hopgood -- pt II The View From There: Australian Films in the US -- 6 Accented Relations: Mad Max on US Screens / Tessa Dwyer -- 7 Talking Trash with Tarantino: Auteurism, Aesthetics and Authority in Not Quite Hollywood / Peter C Kunze -- 8 Australian Horror Movies and the American Market / Mark David Ryan -- 9 The Terrible Terrace: Australian Gothic Reimagined and the (Inner) Suburban Horror of The Babadook / Amanda Howell -- pt III Here and There: Crossing Between Australian, US and International Cinemas -- 10 American Cartel: Block Bookings and the Paramount Plan / Stephen Gaunson -- 11 The Multiplex Era / Jock Given -- 12 "Zest to the jaded movie palate": Wallace Worsley, Scott R Dunlap and The Romance of Runnibede / Jeannette Delamoir -- 13 Defining Neverland: P J Hogan, J M Barrie and Peter Pan in Post-Mabo Australia / Jerod Ra'Del Hollyfield -- 14 Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby Telling a National Iconic Story Through a Transnational Lens / Lesley Hawkes -- index --

(US, Gordon Douglas, 1954) ; KISS ME DEADLY (US, Robert Aldrich, 1955) ; REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (US, Nicholas Ray, 1955) Summary: " An Army of Phantoms- a major new work of film history and cultural criticism from J. Hoberman, one of the foremost film critics writing today addresses the dynamic synergy of American politics and American popular culture during the Cold War's first decade.
Heralded by a mushroom cloud over Hiroshima, the years between 1946 and 1956 brought an explosion of affluence and anxiety. Along with U.S. dominance over Europe and a new war in Asia came the birth of the civil rights movement and the first stirrings of a new youth culture. The period saw the movie industry purged of its political left at the same time as the ideological action hero John Wayne reached the peak of his career.
Analyzing Hollywood's cavalry Westerns, apocalyptic sci-fi flicks, and biblical spectaculars, along with media events, congressional hearings and political campaigns, and drawing on FBI files and studio records, Hoberman has orchestrated a colorful, sometimes surreal pageant wherein Cecil B. DeMille rubs shoulders with Douglas MacArthur, atomic tests are shown on live TV, God talks on the radio, and Joe McCarthy is bracketed with Marilyn Monroe.
Essential reading for film and history buffs, An Army of Phantoms expands on the analysis of the 1960's found in Hoberman's critically acclaimed The Dream Life and offers a lively and astute history of film that is also, to paraphrase Jean-Luc Godard, about the film of history." --Book Jacket.Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. In these tantalising stories of momentous events and legendary characters, Sam Kashner and Jennifer MacNair brilliantly recreate the drama and contradictions of Hollywood's most scandalous and dynamic decade. Colourful and humorous anecdotes of such public icons as Lara Turner, Rock Hudson and Kim Novak profile the celebrities' lives away from the camera, telling of the private moments that were exploited by tabloids such as Confidential and gossip queens Louella Parsons, Heda Hopper and Shellah Graham. Chronicling the unique obsessions of the era, the authors also offer behind-the-scenes commentary on the making of classic films: Hollywood's curious religious revival with The Robe, the film industry's exploitation of the potboiler Peyton Place, even as it rejected the housewife who penned it; and the anarchic director Nick Ray, who, on the set of the enduring classic Rebel without a cause, taught his teenage stars about much more than acting. Guided by the author's historical savvy and intimate storytelling, we discover a city at a crossroads, attempting to reinvent the magic and mystery of its past glories. Tragic, irreverant and always entertaining, the bad and the beautiful reveals the underground history of this turbulent decade in American film." -- BOOK JACKETNotes: Includes bibliographical references and index.ISBN: 0316847380

USA ; HOLLYWOOD ; STARS. USA ; HISTORY OF CINEMA. USA ; FEMININITY IN FILMS Summary: "As living subjects rather than static icons, studio-era Hollywood actresses actively negotiated a balance between their public personas, film roles, and corporeal presence. The contemporary audience's engagement with the experience of these actresses unsettles the traditional model of narcissistic identification, which divides the off-screen spectator from his/her onscreen ideal. Exploring the fan's desire for a material connection to the performer - as well as the star's own dialogue between embodied experience and idealized image - this book traces on- and off-screen representations of narcissistic femininity in classical Hollywood through studies of stars like Greta Garbo, Ava Gardner, and Marilyn Monroe. Merging historical and theoretical concerns, with particular attention to the resonance of golden-age Hollywood in new media, this book explores the movie screen as a medium of shared experience between spectator and star." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references and index -- Includes filmographyISBN: 9781782383994Donation: donated by Senses of Cinema, 2014Contents: Introduction: The Narcissistic Woman: Reflections and Projections -- 1. Despite this, this is the first book to examine cinematic representations of the father. Brining Up Daddy offers a broad perspective on the Hollywood dad looking at important Hollywood fathers from World War II to the present and discusses films for a variety of genres. The book looks at films decade by decade and adopts a multi-faceted theoretical approach, making use of psychoanalysis, sociology and masculinity studies and contextualising the father figure within both Hollywood and American history. Key films include Since You Went Away, The Search, Rebel without a Cause, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, Cape Fear, Kramer vs Kramer, Die Hard, Three Men and a Baby, Boyz n the Hood and Magnolia. In its treatment of the father this unique study discusses why the father is such a seminal character in so many narratives and what he has come to symbolise and represent. This comprehensive study of contemporary international studio considers the circumstances in which this rash of studio complex building and renovating has occurred – in places as diverse as Rome, London, Berlin, Prague, Vancouver, Toronto, Sydney, the Gold Coast and Melbourne. Central to the study is an understanding of studio complexes as cinema and media cities providing not only sound stages but a full range of production and post-production services in the one location. Cinema Cities, Media Cities is the first published analysis of this new international studio system, its origins, its business and its policy contexts. [Taken from back cover.]ISBN: 0958015279

He follows the growth of Sundance from a regional film festival to the premier showcase of independent film that it became, showing how it succeeded almost despite Robert Redford, whose visionary plans were often thwarted by his quixotic personality. He charts the meteoric rise of the controversial Harvey Weinstein, often described as the last mogul who, with his brother Bob, left a trail of carnage in his wake, yet created an Oscar factory that is the envy of the studios. The bestselling author David Bret traces the development of Presley's film career and recounts the on-set cat fights with co-stars and studio personnel. He unearths the truth about the powerful hold exercised over Elvis by 'Colonel' Tom Parker, which revolved around Parker preventing a leak about Presley's relationship with another man from going public and then using this knowledge as a persistant threat to ensure his protege's loyalty.
Bret explores and hotly disputes the controversial allegations, levelled by Presley's step-family, that he had sex with his mother, raped his wife, held debauched, drug fuelled parties with groupies and eventually committed suicide. Above all, the author praises the nature and talent of the man who was - and still is - the supreme authority on rock'n'roll and romance. USA ; KAUFMAN, VICTOR A. ; PUTTNAM, DAVID ; CHARIOTS OF FIRE (UK, Hugh Hudson, 1981) ; KILLING FIELDS, THE (UK, Roland Joffe, 1984) Summary: "FAST FADE is the story of David Puttnam's meteoric rise to the top of the Hollywood heap, and of his equally precipitous descent. It is also a very personal look at the man himself, from young boy growing up in middle-class London suburb, feasting on a steady diet of Hollywood-made movies, to successful producer of small, thoughtful films such as LOCAL HERO, as well as epic, "important" features like THE MISSION. Along the way, Puttnam has made a number of enemies, but he also has made many loyal friends, and he has earned the respect of a great portion of the world's most visible - and, perhaps, most powerful - industry. FAST FADE is an honest, balanced look at the man and his career, and especially his turbulent tenure as head of one of Hollywood's most powerful studios." Film manifestos and global cinema cultures : a critical anthology / [edited by] Scott MacKenzie Berkeley London: University of California Press, 2014.

Source: USPlace: Berkeley LondonPublisher: University of California PressPubDate: 2014PhysDes: xxi, 651 p. ; 26 cmSubject: AVANT-GARDE FILMS ; CONSTRUCTIVISM ; SURREALISM AND THE CINEMA ; STRUCTURALISM ; NOUVELLE VAGUE ; IMPERIALISM AND THE CINEMA ; GENDER AND THE CINEMA ; FEMINISM AND THE CINEMA ; PORNOGRAPHY AND THE CINEMA ; DOCUMENTARY FILMS ; DOCUMENTARIES ; PHILOSOPHY AND THE CINEMA ; WORLD CINEMA ; LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES ; AESTHETICS ; HOLLYWOOD ; ARCHIVES & INSTITUTES, FILM Summary: Film Manifestoes and Global Cinema Cultures is the first book to collect manifestoes from the global history of cinema, providing the first historical and theoretical account of the role played by film manifestos in filmmaking and film culture. Focussing equally on political and aesthetic manifestoes, Scott MacKenzie uncovers a neglected, yet nevertheless central history of the cinema, exploring a series of documents that postulate ways in which to re-imagine the cinema and, in the process, re-imagine the world.
This volume collects the major European “waves” and figures (Eisenstein, Truffaut, Bergman, Free Cinema, Oberhausen, Dogme ‘95); Latin American Third Cinemas (Birri, Sanjinés, Espinosa, Solanas); radical art and the avant-garde (Buñuel, Brakhage, Deren, Mekas, Ono, Sanborn); and world cinemas (Iimura, Makhmalbaf, Sembene, Sen). It also contains previously untranslated manifestos co-written by figures including Bollaín, Debord, Hermosillo, Isou, Kieslowski, Painlevé, Straub, and many others. Thematic sections address documentary cinema, aesthetics, feminist and queer film cultures, pornography, film archives, Hollywood, and film and digital media. Also included are texts traditionally left out of the film manifestos canon, such as the Motion Picture Production Code and Pius XI's Vigilanti Cura, which nevertheless played a central role in film culture. -- extract taken from the back of the bookNotes: Includes index -- Includes bibliographical references and index.ISSN: 9780520276741Contents: Introduction. “An Invention without a Future” -- 1. Film remakes / Constantine Verevis Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2006.
Call No: 753.81 VERAuthor: Verevis, Constantine Source: UKPlace: EdinburghPublisher: Edinburgh University PressPubDate: 2006PhysDes: 198 p. ; 24 cmSubject: REMAKES ; HOLLYWOOD Summary: This is the first book to provide a comprehensive and systematic account of the phenomenon of cinematic remaking, Drawing upon recent theories of genre and intertextuality, Film Remakes describes remaking as both an elastic concept and a complex situation, one enabled and limited by the interrelated roles and practices of industry, critics and audiences. This approach to remaking is developed across three broad sections: the first, remaking as industrial category, deals with issues of production, including commerce and authors; the second, remaking as textual category, investigates issues of reception, including audiences and institutions. The film remake emerges as a particular case of repetition, a function of cinematic and discursive fields that is maintained by historically specific practices, such as copyright law and authorship, canon formation and media literacy, film criticism and re-viewing. These points are made through the lively discussion of numerous historical and contemporary examples, including the remaking of classics (Double Indemnity, All That Heaven Allows, Psycho), foreign art-films (Yojimbo, Solaris, Le Samourai), cult movies (Gun Crazy, Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Dead), and television properties (Batman, The Addams Family, Charlie’s Angels). Film sequels : theory and practice from Hollywood to Bollywood / by Carolyn Jess-Cooke Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2009.
Call No: 753.83 JESAuthor: Jess-Cooke, Carolyn Source: UKPlace: EdinburghPublisher: Edinburgh University PressPubDate: 2009PhysDes: viii, 166 p. ; 24 cmSubject: SEQUELS ; FILM ; CRITICISM ; ADAPTATIONS ; HOLLYWOOD ; THEORY ; A.I: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (US, Steven Spielberg, 2001) Summary: "The film sequel has been maligned in popular culture as a vampirish corporative exercise in profit-making and narrative regurgitation. Drawing upon a wide range of examples from early cinema to the twenty-first century, this volume reveals the increasing popularity of, and experimentation with, film sequels as a central dynamic of Hollywood cinema. Now creeping into world cinemas and independent film festivals, the sequel is persistently employed as a vehicle for cross-cultural dialogue and as a structure by which memories and cultural narratives can be circulated across geographical and historical locations. This book aims to account for some of the major critical contexts within which sequelisation operates by exploring sequel production beyond box office figures. Its account ranges from sequels in recent mainstream cinema, art-house and 'indie' sequels, non-Hollywood sequels, the effects of the domestic market on sequelisation, and the impact of the video game industry on Hollywood." --BACK COVER BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references and indexISBN: 9780748626045Contents: -- preface -- acknowledgments -- Introduction: The age of the $equel: beyond the profit principle -- 1 Before and after the blockbuster: a brief history of the film sequel -- 2 Screaming, slashing, sequelling: what the sequel did to the horror movie -- 3 "It's all up to you!": sequelisation and user-generated content --4 Adventures in Indiewood: sequels in the independent film marketplace -- 5 Signifying Hollywood: sequels in the global economy -- 6 Sequelisation and secondary memory: Steven Spielberg's Artificial intelligence: A. Final cut : dreams and disaster in the making of Heaven's Gate / by Steven Bach New York: William Morrow & Co., Inc., c1985.

USA ; STUDIOS, FILM. USA ; UNITED ARTISTS ; ALLEN, WOODY ; CIMINO, MICHAEL ; FIELD, DAVID ; DEER HUNTER, THE (US, Michael Cimino, 1978) ; HEAVEN'S GATE (US, Michael Cimino, 1980) Summary: "HEAVEN'S GATE is probably the most discussed, least seen film in modern movie history. Its notoriety is so great that it has become a generic term for disaster, for ego run rampant, for epic mismanagement, for wanton extravagance. It was also the watershed film of the decade - not for its cinematic qualities, but for its effect on Hollywood and the way movies will and will not be made in the future. For Michael Cimino's HEAVEN'S GATE did not merely fail (failure is forgivable, sometimes even endorsed in the strange labyrinths of the Hollywood psyche), HEAVEN'S GATE did the unthinkable: it sank a studio. Less than a month after the picture's second release, United Artists - the company founded by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, D.W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin - for all practical purposes ceased to exist. Why? How?" [TAKEN FROM BOOK JACKET]Notes: Includes indexISBN: 0688043828Donation: Simon Wincer

Yet in spite of Fosse's deep cultural significance, no biography has ever brought him fully to life, unveiling the man behind the bowler hat and the swaggering sex appeal. Now, acclaimed cultural historian Sam Wasson traces Fosse's numberless reinventions of himself over a career that would spawn The Pajama Game, Cabaret, Pippin, Chicago, All That Jazz, and other iconic works of art and earn him Tonys, Emmys, and an Oscar. Wasson traces not only Fosse's prodigious professional life, but his intense relationships with everyone from Liza Minnelli, Fred Astaire, and Neil Simon to Shirley MacLaine, Jessica Lange, and Dustin Hoffman. Through extensive interviews with collaborators and lovers and unprecedented access to Fosse's archives, Wasson also reveals the deep wounds that propelled his subject's excessive appetites--for spotlights, women, and life itself. In Fosse, Wasson's stylish, effervescent prose proves the ideal vehicle for reanimating Bob Fosse as he truly was--after hours, close up, and in vibrant color" -- FROM TROVENotes: Contains photos and indexISBN: 9780547553290

The Fox that got away : the last days of the Zanuck dynasty at Twentieth Century Fox / Stephen M. Silverman Secaucus, New Jersey: Lyle Stuart Inc., c1988.

USA ; TWENTIETH CENTURY-FOX ; ZANUCK, DARRYL F. ; ZANUCK, RICHARD ; CLEOPATRA (US, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1963) Summary: "A powerful man and his determined son, an internationally famous dream factory where money is no object, and a battle between egos staged on the most lavish playgrounds in the world. This is the inside story of a family torn from within by greed, envy and a blind need to control. Movie mogul Darryl F. Zanuck believed that the kingdom he had built - 20th Century Fox - was impregnable to outside conquest. Little did he dream that the power who would eventually dethrone him in one of the nastiest battles in Hollywood history would be none other than his own son, Richard Zanuck. In the best Hollywood tradition, this drama was played out on a larger than life scale against a glamorous international setting. There is a cast of supporting players that formed a Zanuck coterie - from their innumerable "yes men" to the old man's many mistresses [...] THE FOX THAT GOT AWAY is filled with high drama. It is a story that will not be soon forgotten, and a look at the workings of an industry that never fails to fascinate." It is a world that Lynda Obst, one of the most successful producers in Hollywood today, entered two decades ago as a neophyte and where through resolve, determination, and quick wit, she has been able to produce some of today's biggest movies, including The Fisher King and Sleepless in Seattle.
Now in Hello, He Lied, Lynda Obst takes us on a behind-the-scenes tour of her world - onto sound stages with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, inside meetings with David Geffen and Peter Guber, on location in New York City with George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer, and into negotiations over The Hot Zones. She shares what she has learned in over twenty years in the business, about how to pitch an idea, impress a suit, win a bidding war over a hot script, and massage egos, as well as the all consuming issue of how to dress on location, what to say to skittish directors, where to eat lunch - whether in New York, LA, or a town you've never heard of - and most important, how to produce successful, critically acclaimed movies.Notes: First published: Boston : Little, Brown, c1996ISBN: 0732258618 : $16.95LON: abn97006410; 12942780

With attendance in decline, negative publicity about stars who were "poison at the box office", and a spate of bad films, industry executives decided that the public was fed up with the movies. Jurca describes their desperate attempt to win back audiences by launching Motion Pictures' Greatest Year, a massive, and unsuccessful, public relations campaign conducted in theaters and newspapers across North America. Drawing on the records of studio personnel, independent exhibitors, movie-goers, and the motion pictures themselves, she analyzes what was wrong - and right - with Hollywood at the end of a heralded decade and how the industry's troubles changed the making and marketing of films in 1938 and beyond." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Formerly CIP; "Fletcher Jones Foundation humanities imprint"; Includes bibliographical references (p. 231-261), index and filmographyISBN: 9780520271807Donation: Donated by Senses of CInema, 2013Contents: -- list of illustrations -- acknowledgments -- Introduction: Hollywood looks at its audience -- The campaign -- Annus horribilis -- Goldwyn's folly -- Such a thing as bad publicity -- The moviegoing habit -- Exhibitors, the movie quiz contest, and a divided industry -- the minds of exhibitors -- The carrot and the stick -- The quiz contest on the ground -- What the contest did for me -- Independents rebel -- The campaign and the press -- The film industry speaks its mind -- Marginal moviegoers -- The gossip columnists -- The dailies have their say -- The films -- "The finest array of productions" -- Ninety-four films -- The death of glamour -- Human films -- The human side of screwball -- You can't take it with you -- Four daughters -- Boys town -- Marie Antoinette -- That's entertainment -- The fourth estate -- Conclusion: motion pictures' worst year -- appendix 1 -- appendix 2 -- notes -- index --

USA ; HOLLYWOOD ; BUSINESS AND THE CINEMA ; GLOBALISATION ; INDUSTRY, FILM ; DE VANEY, ARTHUR Summary: Just how risky is the movie industry? SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (US, Frank Capra, 1939) ; FACE IN THE CROWD, A (US, Elia Kazan, 1957) Summary: "From the turn of the twentieth century through the late 1950s, Havana was a locus for American movie stars, with glamorous visitors including Errol Flynn, John Wayne, and Marlon Brando. In fact, Hollywood was seemingly everywhere in pre-Castro Havana, with movie theaters three to a block in places, widely circulated silver screen fanzines, and terms like “cowboy” and “gangster” entering Cuban vernacular speech. Hollywood in Havana uses this historical backdrop as the catalyst for a startling question: Did exposure to half a century of Hollywood pave the way for the Cuban Revolution of 1959?
Megan Feeney argues that the freedom fighting extolled in American World War II dramas and the rebellious values and behaviors seen in postwar film noir helped condition Cuban audiences to expect and even demand purer forms of Cuban democracy and national sovereignty. At the same time, influential Cuban intellectuals worked to translate Hollywood ethics into revolutionary rhetoric—which, ironically, led to pointed critiques and subversions of the US presence in Cuba. Hollywood in Havana not only expands our notions of how American cinema was internalized around the world—it also broadens our view of the ongoing history of US-Cuban interactions, both cultural and political." -- Back cover.Notes: Includes bibliographical references and index.ISBN: 9780226593692Contents: Introduction. USA Summary: Hollywood is facing unprecedented challenges – and is changing rapidly and radically as a result. In this major new study of the contemporary film industry, leading film historian Tino Balio explores the impact of the Internet, declining DVD sales and changing consumer spending habits on the way Hollywood conducts its business. Today, the major studios play an insignificant role in the bottom lines of their conglomerate parents and have fled to safety, relying on big-budget tentpoles, franchises and family films to reach their target audiences. Comprehensive, compelling and filled with engaging case studies (TimeWarner, DreamWorks SKG, Spider Man, The Lord of the Rings, IMAX, Netflix, Miramax, Sony Pictures Classics, Lionsgate and Sundance), Hollywood in the New Millennium is a must-read for all students of film studies, cinema studies, media studies, communication studies, and radio and television. -- publisher's blurbContents: Introduction

Hollywood, interrupted : insanity chic in Babylon - the case against celebrity / by Andrew breitbart an Mark Ebner Hoboken, New Jersey: John Wiley and Sons, 2004.
Call No: 46(794) BREAuthor: Breitbart, Andrew ; Ebner, Mark Edition: 2004Place: Hoboken, New JerseyPublisher: John Wiley and SonsPubDate: 2004PhysDes: 394 pages : illustrations ; 22 cmSubject: HOLLYWOOD ; CELEBRITIES ; LOVE, COURTNEY ; MADONNA ; JACKSON, MICHAEL ; SPIELBERG, STEVEN Summary: Hollywood, Interrupted is a sometimes frightening, occasionally sad, and frequently hysterical odyssey into the darkest realms of showbiz pathology, the endless stream of meltdowns and flameouts, and the inexplicable behavior on the part of show business personalities.
Charting celebrities from rehab to retox, to jails, cults, institutions, near-death experiences and the Democratic Party, Hollywood, Interrupted takes readers on a surreal field trip into the amoral belly of the entertainment industry. Each chapter — covering topics including warped Hollywood child-rearing, bad medicine, hypocritical political maneuvering and the complicit media — delivers a meticulously researched, interview-infused, attitude heavy dispatch which analyzes and deconstructs the myths created by the celebrities themselves.
Celebrities somehow believe that it's their god-given right to inflict their pathology on the rest of us. Hollywood, Interrupted illustrates how these dysfunctional dilettantes are mad as hell... And we're not going to take it any more. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9780471706243

Though much of Hollywood's engagement with the law occurs offstage, in the larger theater of copyright, many of Hollywood's valued treasures - from Modern Times (1936) to Star Wars (1977) - cannot be fully understood without appreciating their legal controversies. Peter Decherney shows that the history of intellectual property in Hollywood has not always mirrored the evolution of the law and recounts these extralegal solutions and their impact on American media and culture." - BOOK BLURBNotes: Contains list of illustrations and indexISBN: 9780231159470

Journeys of desire : European actors in Hollywood / a critical companion / Alastair Phillips and Ginette Vincendeau (eds) London: British Film Institute, 2006.

SILENT PERIOD ; EXTRAS ; STUDIOS, FILM. USA ; CHEVALIER, MAURICE ; PARAMOUNT STUDIOS ; JEWS AND THE CINEMA. USA ; NAZIS IN FILMS ; GABIN, JEAN ; ACTORS. UK ; HOLLYWOOD ; TYPE CHARACTERS IN FILMS Summary: Journeys of Desire offers for the first time a comprehensive critical guide to European Actors in American film, bringing together 15 overview chapters and a-z entries on over 900 individuals in one accessible and scholarly volume. Since the early days of the US film industry, European actors have consistently been a major force in Hollywood. Screen idols such as Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Boyer, Audrey Hepburn, Maurice Chevalier, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Antonio Banderas, as well as scores of more modest players, have profoundly shaped ‘American’ cinema. They have also contributed to the propagation of European types and stereotypes such as the ‘Russian’ and Nordic queens played by Garbo and Dietrich, the French Roues popularized by Chevalier, the fiery Latinos depicted by Banderas and the British arch-villain played by Steven Berkoff, Anthony Hopkins and Tim Roth. Films such as Casablanca (1942), Gigi (1958), Green Card (1990) and Vanilla Sky (2001), among many others, would not be the same without them. Contributions from a team of 70 international experts provide ground-breaking case studies of prominent individuals and phenomena associated with the émigrés, such as the retired Russian officers who played crowds in silent films, the stereotyping of European actresses in ‘bad women’ roles, and the ultimate irony of Jewish actors playing Nazis. Individual entries chart the careers and performances of the European actors – from Victoria Abril to Mai Zetterling – who appeared in American movies. [Taken from back cover].ISBN: 1844571246

Placing her close readings of films within the framework of globalising processes she shows the cultural flows between cinemas are more fluid and their borders are more porous than commonly assumed. Loving and Hating Hollywood puts globalisation firmly on the agenda for cinema studies. Some of the biggest names in entertainment- including David Geffen, Barry Diller, and Michael Ovitz started their dazzling careers in the lowly mailroom. Based on more than two hundred interviews, David Rensin unfolds the never-before-told history of an American institution - in the voices of the people who lived it. Through nearly seven decades of glamour and humiliation, lousy pay and incredible perks, killer egos and a kill-or-be-killed ethos, you'll go where the trainees go, learn what they must do to get ahead, and hear the best insider stories from the Hollywood everyone knows about but no one really knows. A vibrant tapestry of dreams, desire, and exploitation, The Mailroom is not only an engrossing read but a crash course, taught by the experts, on how to succeed in Hollywood." -- BACK COVER BOOK BLURBISBN: 9780345442352Contents: -- Kids at Work -- Kids at Work: William Morris Agency, New York, 1937-1951 --

He was also a true casting couch agent, brokering sex for opportunity on the silver screen. While this practice was rampant across Hollywood, for gay actors and film professionals the casting couch was a dangerous cliff: a public revelation could and would ruin a career. Then came the Circus Maximus created by director Steven Spielberg, billionaire David Geffen, and Jeffrey Katzenberg (who gave the world The Lion King). Nothing in decades had approached the excitement surrounding the empire called DreamWorks, where hype, glory, and investors vying to kick in billions gave way to blowups, battles, and betrayals worthy of THE GODFATHER. Nicole LaPorte reveals for the first time the delicious truths of what happened behind the scenes. Readers will feel they are part of the creative calamities of moviemaking as LaPorte's fly-on-the-wall detail shows us Hollywood's bizarre rules of business. We see clashes between the often otherworldly Spielberg's troops and Katzenberg's warriors, the debacles and disasters, but also the Oscar-winning triumphs, such as SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. We see Geffen seducing investors and watch as the studio burns through billions while its rich owners get richer and everybody else suffers. Here is Hollywood - up close, glamorous, and gritty." Call No: 81DUN DUNAuthor: Dunne, John Gregory Edition: First editionSource: USPlace: New YorkPublisher: Random HousePubDate: c1997PhysDes: 203 p. ; 22 cmSubject: HOLLYWOOD ; INDUSTRY, FILM ; INDUSTRY, FILM. USA ; SCRIPTS ; DUNNE, JOHN GREGORY ; UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL (US, Jon Avnet, 1996) Summary: "Monster is John Gregory Dunne's mordantly funny account of life on the Hollywood food chain. Dunne and his wife, Joan Didion, have been working in the movies for over twenty-five years, and have written, rewritten, brainstormed, and developed two dozen scripts, seven of which have been produced. Monster is the candid chronicle of how one of those scripts finally got made into Up Close & Personal, starring Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer.
The Up Close screenplay started out as the story of Jessica Savitch, the television news anchorwoman whose history included drugs, opportunistic sex, and an early, violent death. Over the years it was refined into a story that would "make the audience walk out feeling uplifted, good about something, and good about themselves," as one executive put it in an early script meeting. The tale of how this happened is a hilarious saga that Dunne relates with a wicked eye and perfect pitch for the absurdities and savage infighting of the film industry."

They include films from genres as far ranging as musical, film noir, melodrama, comedy, and action adventure. Such movies seduce us with the promise of revealing the reality behind the camera. But, as part of the very industry they supposedly critique, they cannot take us behind the scenes in any true sense. This paradox - the simultaneous debunking and celebration of Hollywood - lies at the heart of the genre. Through close analysis of the best of these films. Ames reveals how the idea of Hollywood is constructed (and constructs itself), particularly through such moments of explicit self-referentiality as the movie-within-a-movie and scenes set in studiosNotes: Includes filmography (p. 227); Includes bibliographical references (p. 238-244) and indexISBN: 0813120187 (cloth : alk. paper)LON: 12952826

Each is considered in its own right, sometimes resulting in different ways of defining New Hollywood. One of the book's central arguments is that a combination of these approaches is needed if we are to understand the latest incarnations of the cinema that continues to dominate the global market. Issues covered include: the Hollywood Renaissance from the late 1960s to the mid late 1970s; industrial factors shaping the construction of the corporate blockbuster; the role of auteur directors, genre and stardom in New Hollywood; narrative spectacle in the contemporary blockbuster and the relationship between production for the big and small screen.Notes: Bibliography: p.274-284

Source: USPlace: Princeton, New JerseyPublisher: Princeton University PressPubDate: 2005PhysDes: xiii, 200 p. : ill., maps ; 24 cmSubject: HOLLYWOOD ; HISTORY OF CINEMA. USA Summary: "Why is the U.S. motion picture industry concentrated in Hollywood and why does it remain there in the age of globalization? Allen Scott uses the tools of economic geography to explore these questions and to provide a number of highly original answers. The conceptual roots of his analysis go back to Alfred Marshall's theory of industrial districts and pick up on modern ideas about business clusters as sites of efficient and innovative production.".
"On Hollywood builds on this work by adding major new empirical elements. By examining the history of motion picture production from the early twentieth century to the present through this analytic lens, Scott is able to show why the industry (which was initially focused on New York) had shifted the majority of its production to Southern California by 1919. He also addresses in detail the bases of Hollywood's long-standing creative energies and competitive advantages. At the same time, the book explores the steady globalization of Hollywood's market reach as well as the cultural and political dilemmas posed by this phenomenon." "On Hollywood will appeal not only to general readers with an interest in the motion picture industry, but also to economic geographers, business professionals, regional development practitioners, and cultural theorists as well."--BOOK JACKET.Notes: Formerly CIP; Includes bibliographical references (p. Ozploitation compared to what? : A challenge to contemporary Australian film studies. in Studies in Australasian Cinema (2010) vol.4 iss.1 p.9-21
Author: Martin, Adrian PhysDes: ArticleSubject: INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA ; GENRES. AUSTRALIA ; NATIONAL CULTURE AND THE CINEMA. AUSTRALIA ; NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD (AT, Mark Hartley, 2008) Summary: Discussion of critical attention given to 'Ozploitation' films particularly after 'Not Quite Hollywood'. Martin argues suggests current focus on this repressed strain of national cinema excludes many genres and therefore provides limited insight into Australian cinema.Notes: Australian exploitation cinema of the 1970s and 1980s has swiftly become a fashionable topic for analysis, rehabilitation and celebration, especially in the wake of the popular documentary Not Quite Hollywood featuring Quentin Tarantino. Is this Australian cinema's ‘return of the repressed’, at last, in the form of tough, vulgar, anarchic genre pictures – and does this show the way forward for our national cinema? This essay questions many aspects of the ‘Ozploitation’ craze, including its exclusion of art, intellectual or experimental cinema, and its peculiar streamlining of an extremely variegated and still obfuscated national film history. In particular, I argue for a comparative approach to national film cultures – which, in this case, would compel us to ask other, more stringent questions about the ultimate value of the currently baptized Ozploitation ‘classics’. -- ABSTRACT

Drawing on contemporary concepts from transnational cinema studies, this book investigates Weir's entire three-decade career, paying particular attention to his journey from his native Sydney, with its largely auteur-driven national cinema, to the miltimillion-dollar Hollywood film industry with its many genre conventions. Along the way, the author explores a host of questions accompanying this move, including Weir's status as a transnational filmmaker and a more generalised discussion of the critically controversial idea of the auteur. Rounding out this volume are interviews with leading Hollywood filmmakers who discuss Weir's work."-BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 173-193) and filmography (p. 195-202)ISBN: 9781841504773Contents: -- acknowldegments -- Introduction -- Migrations and transnationalism in the cinema -- Perspectives on Peter Weir -- Australian production context in the 1970s and early 1980s -- Peter Weir's four key steps from Australia to Hollywood -- Conclusions -- Bibliography -- Appendix 1: Filmography - main credits -- Appendix 2: Films made in Hollywood by Australian directors --URL status: URL: 'https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/rmit/detail.action?docID=1069409'

The ragman's story : an autobiography / Kirk Douglas London: Simon and Schuster, 1988.

This one is neither. In his powerful, angry and passionate book, Kirk Douglas tells the story of his life in his own words, holding back nothing. Born Issur Danielovitch Demsky, the son of an illiterate immigrant Russian-Jewish ragman, in Amsterdam, New York, Douglas paints a searing and unforgettable picture of an almost Dickensian childhood of brutal poverty - the background that has dominated his life as an actor, father and man, fuelling the great creative anger that has added such depth to his performances. With profound and moving insight, he shows how the determination to overcome that childhood and succeed on his own terms led him to take on roles that most stars of his magnitude would never have risked - Van Gogh, in LUST FOR LIFE; Spartacus the slave; the courageous, conscience-stricken Colonel Dax, in PATHS OF GLORY; the agonized boxer Midge, in CHAMPION, to name only a few - and to fight the studios and the Hollywood establishment for the right to control and produce his own movies, long before it was common practice for stars to do so." Remade in Hollywood : the global Chinese presence in Transnational cinemas / Kenneth Chan Hong Kong: Hong Kong University Press, 2009.

CHINA ; REMAKES ; HOLLYWOOD Summary: "The dramatic surge of Chinese visibility in Hollywood has been spurred by Sino-chic talents such as directors Ang Lee, John Woo, Wong Kar-wai, Wayne Wang, and Zhang Yimou, and stars such as Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Chow Yun-fat, Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi, and Michelle Yeoh. Analyzing well-known films by Chinese stars and crew, and the influence they have had on Hollywood directors, Kenneth Chan describes how post-1997 notions of Chinese identity and cultural genres have been reinvented and repackaged by major US studios. Highlighting numerous contradictions and cultural anxieties evident in transnational Hollywood films, Chan suggests that many Chinese stars and directors have made painful compromises to get their films successfully launched into the global capitalist stream of cultural commodities. -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographical references, filmography and indexISBN: 9789622090569Contents: -- acknowledgments -- Introduction : remaking Chinese cinemas, Hollywood style -- Visualizing Hong Kong : Hollywood's 1997 response to the Hong Kong handover -- The global return of the Wuxia pian (Chinese sword-fighting movie) -- Enter the triads : American cinema's new racialized criminal other -- Hollywood's Sino-chic : Kung fu parody, mimicry, and play in cross-cultural citationality -- Chinese supernaturalism : mythic ethnography and the mystical other -- Coda : global cinematic technologies of ethnic (un)representation -- coda: global cinematic technologies of ethnic (un)representation -- notes -- filmography -- bibliography -- index --

In its comparatively short and always turbulent history RKO made some of the greatest films and nurtured some of the finest talents ever to emerge from Hollywood - and allowed others, such as David O. Selznick, to slip disastrously through its fingers. It was the studio that immortalized Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and almost succeeded in ruining Katharine Hepburn's career. It brought to stardom Irene Dunne, Bette Davis, Robert Mitchum and Cary Grant among others, unveiled the genius of Orson Wells [sic] and established KING KONG and TARZAN in popular mythology. They are all here in a detailed account of their triumphs and their failures, together with a fully illustrated description and assessment of all the films they made." It recreates for us movies we've come to love: movies the way they were when, in 1934, four in particular - IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, TWENTIETH CENTURE, THE THIN MAN, and THE GAY DIVORCEE - heralded the arrival of the golden age of Hollywood romantic ("screwball") comedy. Over the next ten years, some of Hollywood's brightest directors and stars turned out some of America's most enduring and beloved films. The screwballs - slangy, irreverent, playful, skeptical, and "powerfully, glamorously in love with love" - constitute a genre of American film unique in its combination of the innocent and the worldly, of swank and slapstick. Now critic James Harvey - writing with brilliance and humor - gives us the first truly comprehensive book about these movies and the people who made them." His rambunctious filmography remains an artistic force on par with Hollywood's greatest comic directors: Chaplin, Lubitsch, Sturges, and Wilder. Like Wilder, Edward's propensity for hilarity is double-helixed with pain, and in films like Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Pink Panther, and even days of Wine and Roses, we can hear him off-screen, laughing in the dark. And yet, despite those enormous successes, he was at one time considered a Hollywood villain. After his marriage to Julie Andrews, Edwards's Darling Lili nearly sunk both of them and brought Paramount Pictures to its knees. Almost overnight, Blake became an industry pariah, which ironically fortified his sense of satire, and allowed him to simultaneously fight the Hollywood tide as he rode it. Employing keen visual analysis, meticulous research, and troves of interviews and production files, Sam Wasson delivers the first complete account of one of the maddest figures Hollywood has ever known." - BOOK JACKETNotes: Includes filmography.; Includes bibliographical references and index.ISBN: 9780819569158Donation: Donated by Senses Of Cinema, 2009Contents: Prologue: Breaking in, 1922-1955 -- Blake begins, 1955-1959 -- Blake builds, 1959-1962 -- Blake blossoms, 1963-1968 -- Blake burns, 1968-1974 -- Panther pictures (Blake banks) -- Blake booms, 1979-1982 -- Blake breaks, 1983-1988 -- Blake bows, 1988-1991 -- Epilogue: Making out, October 24, 1993.

In it, Peter Bart pulls together his best columns from Variety and GQ. He groups them, juxtaposes them, and interprets them, outlining in detail the history and inner workings of Hollywood. This could only be done by someone powerful enough to phone any star or head of studio and have his calls taken on the first ring. In story after story, Bart shows how the major studios haver diverted thie energies away from production of the shrewdly crafted pictures that once made the industry powerful. There isn't, for example, much range or innovation in the movies of salable objects- natural disasters, aliens, dinosaurs, ghosts, monsters, or any combination thereof. All are subjects easily parlayed into theme-park environments, action figures, video games, and clothing lines. Similarly, since Jaws twenty years ago, there's been a very short list of acceptable settings. The 1998 Academy Award nominations for best picture all went to films set in Elizabethian times or during World War II. A few years ago it looked as though Pulp Fiction and other independent films were going to save showbiz. Now independent producers like Miramax and New Line have been acquired by the conglomerates. Who and what will resurrect Hollywood? Peter Bart has the answers." - BOOK JACKETNotes: Includes indexISBN: 1580631169LON: 21362029
