Activism, community and governance : Barry Barclay's The Kaipara affair in Studies in Australasian cinema (2007) vol.1 iss.2 p.147-159
Author: Murray, Stuart PhysDes: ArticleSubject: KAIPARA AFFAIR, THE (NZ, Barry Barclay, 2005) Summary: This article discusses the most recent film made by Maori film-maker Barry Barclay, the 2005 documentary feature The Kaipara affair, which centres on disputes over fishing rights in the Kaipara harbour in the North Island of New Zealand. It sees the film as a continuation of Barclay's method of activist film-making, which demands that Indigenous communities are represented through cultural modes and forms that extend from within the communities themselves. It also stresses the ways in which Barclay's film-making method revises a number of the traditions of activist documentary film-making. Finally, the article examines the controbersy surrounding the recutting of the film for screening on national television, seeing the event as symptomatic of the cultural tensions that exist in New Zealand over the representation of Maori activism. -- ABSTRACT

Faster than a rat up a drainpipe, Bazza heads for Earl's Court to catch up with a bonzer bunch of ex-pat bastards - and from there rampages through London, cracking tubes, parking the tiger, pointing percy, flashing the nasty and handing out knuckle-sandwiches to the unsuspecting Poms - who wouldn't even know a tram was up 'em 'till the bell rang!
Barry Humphries, Barry Crocker, Spike Milligan and Peter Cook star in this ground breaking flick that captured Bazza's celebrated yawn in glorious technicolor and put the Oz fillum industry on the map! ..." --container.

This engaging new study brings fresh perspectives, insights, and innovative approaches to a variety of films from a diversity of filmmakers. Areas of focus include the complex and contentious subjects of masculinity, femininity and feminism, the maternal, as well as the Indigenous road film and the protean Australian gothic. During the formative years of the revival, Australian films seemed to emerge from out of the blue in terms of global film history, with many features including Picnic at Hanging Rock (l975), Caddie (l976), The Last Wave (l977), The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (l978), and My Brilliant Career (l979) receiving international distribution and enthusiastic critical acclaim with strong box office results. By the time the film revival was in full swing, not only did Australian audiences flock to theaters to see “homegrown” films, but the quantity of Australian films on overseas screens was so high that ardent critics declared this outpouring an Australian “New Wave.” The eyes of the world had turned to a compelling and largely unknown culture. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781501390029Contents: Acknowledgements -- Dedication -- In Memory Of -- Introduction -- 1. Autism in Film and Television brings together more than a dozen essays on depictions of autism, exploring how autistic characters are signified in media and how the reception of these characters informs societal understandings of autism.
Editors Murray Pomerance and R. Barton Palmer have assembled a pioneering examination of autism’s portrayal in film and television. Contributors consider the various means by which autism has been expressed in films such as Phantom Thread, Mercury Rising, and Life Animated and in television and streaming programs including Atypical, Stranger Things, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Community. Across media, the figure of the brilliant, accomplished, and “quirky” autist has proven especially appealing. Film and television have thus staked out a progressive position on neurodiversity by insisting on screen time for autism but have done so while frequently ignoring the true diversity of autistic experience. As a result, this volume is a welcome celebration of nonjudgmental approaches to disability, albeit one that is still freighted with stereotypes and elisions. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781477324912Contents: -- -- Preface: Two Meditations: Who Am I? A MA SOEUR ; BREILLAT, CATHERINE ; BRESSON, ROBERT Summary: Whether embodied in literature, theater, or film, an enduring theme of many artistic works has been the protagonist’s search for identity. Such quests are typically psychological or spiritual journeys and depicted on the screen in a variety of manifestations—endeavors embarked upon to address an emotional trauma or to overcome an obstacle in the hero’s life. Using Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et La Bête as a leitmotif, these pursuits are discussed by author Maria Garcia as encounters with the “Beast.” At the end of their quests, heroes are reborn into their new identities, while the Beast disappears, transforms, or dies.
In Cinematic Quests for Identity: The Hero’s Encounter with the Beast, Garcia examines the cinematic conventions of the male and female search for individuation across several genres. After discussing La Belle et La Bête, the author looks at a number of films including three iconic male journeys—The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Searchers, and The Deer Hunter. Additional chapters focus on The Silence of the Lambs, Bringing Up Baby, The Lady Eve, The Secret of Roan Inish, The Natural, and Moneyball. The book concludes with a consideration of the three fairy tale films by Catherine Breillat—Fat Girl, Bluebeard, and The Sleeping Beauty—and the female characters in several Robert Bresson films, including The Trial of Joan of Arc.
Providing a unique and original perspective on films throughout the world, this provocative book draws upon Jungian thought, as well as several literary traditions including fairy tales, epic poetry, and Greek and Celtic mythology. Aimed at scholars of film and film theory, Cinematic Quests for Identity will also appeal to movie fans interested in a deeper understanding of films that explore a character’s struggle to live a conscious life. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781442246973

Analyses what makes an acting performance excellent, through a range of examples from world cinema. What actors do on-screen is a fascination for audiences all over the world. Indeed, the cultural visibility of movie stars is so pronounced that stardom has often been regarded as intrinsic to the medium's specificity. Yet not all great cinematic performances are star turns, and so, what really makes a cinematic performance good, interesting, or important has been a neglected topic in film criticism. This two-volume set presents detailed interpretations of singular performances by several of the most compelling actors in cinema history, asking in many different and complementary ways what makes performance meaningful, how it reflects a director's style, as well as how it contributes to the development of national cinemas and cultures. Whether noting the precise ways actors shape film narrative, achieve emotional effect, or move toward political subversion, the essays in these books innovate new approaches to studying screen performance as an art form and cultural force"--Page 4 of cover.Notes: Includes bibliographical references and index.ISBN: 9781474417006Contents: Intro -- Acknowledgments -- Close-up: great American performances -- Chapter 1 Ethel Waters in The Member of the Wedding -- Chapter 2 Irene Dunne in The Awful Truth -- Chapter 3 Cary Grant in His Girl Friday -- Chapter 4 Janet Gaynor in Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans -- Chapter 5 Katharine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter -- Chapter 6 Bette Davis in Dangerous -- Chapter 7 James Stewart in Vertigo -- Chapter 8 Carole Lombard in To Be or Not to Be -- Chapter 9 James Mason in Lolita -- Chapter 10 Montgomery Clift in A Place in the Sun -- Chapter 11 Tony Curtis in Sweet Smell of Success.

It displays the rich diversity of film production in the country, and in doing so highlights a number of specific contexts - Maori, documentary and short filmmaking, literary adaptations, the development of the national Film Commission and Archive, marketing and censorship, in addition to explorations into the place of bicultural relations, spirituality, masculinity and disability - that have created a cinema of global significance. Featuring critical accounts of internationally-acclaimed features like The Piano and Once Were Warriors, as well as the growth of the national infrastructure that made such films possible, Contemporary New Zealand Cinema is the most thorough study available of a vibrant filmmaking culture. The book also includes a fully comprehensive filmography detailing all New Zealand feature and television films."--BOOK JACKETNotes: Filmography: p.[239]-253

The successful film is itself a new work of art, as this book affirms, and what it reflects back to its source allows for rewarding analysis - and that is what The English Novel and the Movies is all about. These twenty-seven insightful essays - written expressly for this collection - delve into films based on novels by English and Irish writers ranging from Defoe's Robinson Crusoe to D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover and Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Many are recent productions. Directors range from Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston, and Orson Welles to Francis Ford Coppola and Werner Herzog." -- BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes index; "Selected filmography: film adaptations of English novels, 1719-1930s": p. 323-347; Bibliography: p. 352-368ISBN: 0804424721 : $13.00; 0804463581 (pbk.) : $5.95LON: 80005342; 1937478

Many scholars have linked the origins of the discipline to late-1960s developments in the academy such as structuralist theory and student protest. Yet this collection reveals the broader material and institutional forces—both inside and outside of the university—that have long shaped the field. Beginning with the first investigations of cinema in the early twentieth century, this volume provides detailed examinations of the varied social, political, and intellectual milieus in which knowledge of cinema has been generated. The contributors explain how multiple instantiations of film study have had a tremendous influence on the methodologies, curricula, modes of publication, and professional organizations that now constitute the university-based discipline. Extending the historical insights into the present, contributors also consider the directions film study might take in changing technological and cultural environments. -- Publisher descriptionNotes: Includes bibliographical references and indexISBN: 9780822342892Contents: The Academy and Motion Pictures / Lee Grieveson, Haidee Wasson

Charting their emergence and subsequent development through five decades, New Zealand Film and Television: Institution, Industry and Cultural Change examines these two increasingly vibrant cultural and creative industries. Whilst there is a growing body of academic work on the film and television productions which have originated in New Zealand, relatively little exists that examines the specific cultural concerns, institutional objectives, policy directives, and industry practices that have shaped these productions. New Zealand Film and Television: Institution, Industry and Cultural Change aims to fill this gap."-BOOK BLURBNotes: includes glossary of Maori terms; includes bibliographical references; includes indexISBN: 9781841504575Contents: -- List of Illustrations -- Acknowledgements -- Glossary of Maori Terms -- List of Abbreviations -- Introduction -- 1. Old debts: the unsung relationship between Australia's film and advertising industries in Studies in Australasian cinema (2008) vol.2 iss.1 p.33-45
Author: Crawford, Robert PhysDes: ArticleSubject: INDUSTRY, FILM. AUSTRALIA ; ADVERTISING. AUSTRALIA ; HISTORY OF CINEMA. AUSTRALIA ; ADVERTISING. TV. AUSTRALIA ; ADVENTURES OF BARRY MCKENZIE, THE (AT, Bruce Beresford, 1972) ; CROCODILE DUNDEE (AT, Peter Faiman, 1986) Summary: This study surveys the relationship that has developed between Australia's advertising and film industries from the early twentieth century to the present. Throughout this period there has been a continuous exchange of skills, talent and ideas between the two industries. While the flow has been two ways, it will be argued that the advertising industry's contribution to the film industry has been greater. Australia's advertising industry functioned as a nursery for the nation's film industry, identifying and training the nation's aspiring film-makers whilst providing them with access to a large audience. The globalization of both industries has similarly reinforced this relationship, ensuring that the film industry remains indebted to its commercial cousin. -- Abstract

AUSTRALIA ; HUMPHRIES, BARRY Summary: "Barry Humphries struts the world stage, masked as housewife megastar Dame Edna Everage, relentlessly savaging and enchanting all in his path. Humphries' comic brilliance is indisputable, and his cast of characters has appalled and enthralled audiences for more than fifty years. Yet for all that has been written about Humphries - some of it by Humphries himself - this most mysterious of men has managed to evade real scrutiny. One Man Show presents for the first time the definitive, captivating story of the true Barry Humphries - from his youthful pranks on the staid streets of Melbourne, the phenomenon of Barry McKenzie, his many marriages and affairs, and the dark years of alcoholism, through to his triumphant successes on television and Broadway. For close to ten years, author Anne Pender has investigated Humphries' life and career, interviewing his family, friends and fellow performers in her quest to uncover the anarchic life and complex world of this outrageous, theatrical genius. The result is mesmerising." - BOOK BLURBNotes: ABC logo at foot of t.p; Includes bibliographical references (p. 416-422) and indexISBN: 9780733325915

Our own image : A story of a Maori filmmaker / Barry Barclay Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota Press, 2015.
Call No: 81 BAR BARAuthor: Barclay, Barry Edition: 2015Place: Minneapolis, MNPublisher: University of Minnesota PressPubDate: 2015PhysDes: xiv, 100 : illus. ; 21 cmSubject: BARCLAY, BARRY ; NGATI (NZ, Barry Barclay, 1987) ; MAORI CINEMA ; NEW ZEALAND Notes: Acclaimed Maori filmmaker Barry Barclay’s Our Own Image relates the experiences of making his documentaries and his critically acclaimed feature-length film Ngati (1987), widely credited as the first fiction feature by a member of an indigenous community. Barclay details his views on the process of filmmaking within his own Maori community and discusses how his work differed from popular cinema, advocating for indigenous control, participation, and perspectives in media.
Our Own Image gives an in-depth depiction of the changes Barclay’s approach contributed to the field of documentaries, as well as displaying the respect for community Barclay brought to his filming technique. His insistence on letting people speak for themselves demonstrated authenticity to audiences, creating awareness of indigenous cinema in New Zealand and worldwide. -- publisher's blurbISBN: 9780816697618

Out from nowhere : Pakeha anxieties in Ngati (Barclay, 1987), Once were warriors (Tamahori, 1994) and Whale rider (Caro, 2002) in Studies in Australasian cinema (2009) vol.3 iss.3 p.239-250
Author: Joyce, Hester PhysDes: ArticleSubject: INDUSTRY, FILM. NEW ZEALAND ; MAORI IN FILMS ; NATIONAL CULTURE AND THE CINEMA. NEW ZEALAND ; IMPERIALISM AND THE CINEMA ; NGATI (NZ, Barry Barclay, 1987) ; ONCE WERE WARRIORS (NZ, Lee Tamahori, 1994) ; WHALE RIDER (NZ/GG, Niki Caro, 2002) Summary: This article explores the development of New Zealand cinema as one of unease, as reflective of the disintegration of the utopian dream inherent in the founding settler era. It examines three films from consecutive decades, Ngati (Barclay, 1987), Once Were Warriors (Tamahori, 1994) and Whale Rider (Caro, 2002), and compares representations of Maori as illustrative of Pakeha (white settler) anxieties about Maori/Pakeha relations. It argues that while Ngati and Once Were Warriors contain elements of postcolonial critique, Whale Rider returns to a model of segregation, invoking spirituality of Maori as nostalgia for a lost utopian past. -- Abstract

Perfect for beginners, this book guides the reader through philosophy using illuminating cinematic works, like Avatar, Inception, Fight Club, Wings of Desire, Run Lola Run, A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner, Dirty Harry and many other films.
The fully revised and updated Third Edition features: an expanded introduction that provides a new discussion of the relationship between film and philosophy; new material on notable philosophers such as Aristotle, Merleau-Ponty and Rawls; and coverage of new topics like virtue ethics and what Socrates offers for critical thinking. An updated glossary, references and bibliography, and a filmography, are also included in the Third Edition. -- publisher's web siteNotes: Includes glossaryISBN: 9780415538169Contents: Preface -- Introduction -- 1 - Plato’s Picture Show - the theory of knowledge -- 2 - All of Me - the self and personal identity -- 3 - Crimes and Misdemeanors - moral philosophy -- 4 - Antz - social and political philosophy -- 5 - Modern Times - society, science, and technology -- 6 - The Holy Grail - critical thinking -- Further Reading -- Glossary -- Bibliography -- Filmography -- Index

AUSTRALIA ; COMEDIANS IN FILMS ; RAYE, CAROL ; HUMPHRIES, BARRY ; BROWN, NOELINE ; GILLIES, MAX ; CLARKE, JOHN ; SHELDON, TONY ; SCOTT, DENISE Summary: Anne Pender explores the lives and creative work of seven extraordinary performers who have brought joy and hilarity to generations of Australians through their memorable characters on stage and television, and in their potent satire, musical comedy, revue, drama, stand-up acts and one-person shows.
Carol Raye, Barry Humphries, Noeline Brown, Max Gillies, John Clarke, Tony Sheldon and Denise Scott pioneered home-grown humour, transformed the image of Australia, intervened in political life, and brought Australian comedy to the world. They created iconic figures, including Mavis Bramston, Dame Edna Everage, Clarke and Dawe, Bernadette in Priscilla Queen of the Desert and mesmerising impersonations of prime ministers.
In Seven Big Australians, Pender interprets the lives of these significant comic actors, offering vivid biographical portraits of their childhood and family of origin, their struggles to enter the entertainment industry and the art they created over many decades. Drawing on extensive interviews conducted with each actor over many years, Pender documents their experiences of the hardships of breaking into the industry and the challenges of staying there, the gruelling nature of daily life as a performer, the demands of working in multiple forms, the realities of script writing under pressure and the exhilaration of performing. These actors are significant cultural figures whose lives are awe-inspiring, momentous and magical.-- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781925835212

Exhibiting Stanley’s equipment, his plans, notes, photos? It did not feel right and would have been unthinkable during his lifetime, yet on careful reflection and discussion with Christiane Kubrick it became quite clear that while his privacy had to be guarded, his professional output was for all to be seen to celebrate the life of a great filmmaker. The efforts, the hard work, the inventiveness and wealth of ideas are so interesting, whereas the mystery of artistic talent will always remain under seal. Stanley Kubrick’s films will remain a valid reflection of his time and culture for future generations.” [“Foreword”, Jan Harlan].ISBN: 3887990692
