And did those sci fi prophesies come true? All dreamers and designers start from a place of deep imagining.

In putting together, the PAST FUTURES series curators Ghita Loebenstein and Michelle Carey considered the future worlds that filmmakers were envisioning in the past. Screening selections include distinct visions from pasts that vary in length from way back to cinema’s silent beginnings, to just a moment or two ago. In Past Futures Loebenstein and Carey look at imagined dystopias and utopias that have made their way into the collective conscious – into the design of now – and consider what might be in the making to come.

Films in the programme include:

Metropolis

Her

Fahrenheit 451 (Intro by Steve Gaunson)

Silent Running

On Guard (Introduced by both Olympia Szilagyi (AFIRC) and director Sarah Gibson by video)

The Handmaid’s Tale

They Live

Gattaca (Introduced by James Douglas)

Bombay Beach (Introduced by Alexia Kannas)

Soylent Green (Introduced by Djoymi Baker)

Other MDW events at The Capitol include:

Architecture for Complexity 29 MAR

Reactivate the World 31 MAR

Polar Patterns 28 – 28 MAR (2 SESSIONS)

Kerstin Thompson Architects: Encompassing People & Places 30 MAR

In celebrating Melbourne Design Week 2021, The Capitol is hosting several fantastic screenings and events.
