Or avocados? During the heady years of tax incentives and 10BA it didn't much matter to Australian investors where they put their surplus funds. For the Australian film industry, booming after the creative revival of the 1970s, the next decade became one of confusion and controversy. In THE AVOCADO PLANTATION, David Stratton gives us a comprehensive look at the making of 270 film features between 1980 and 1990. He discusses the big name attractions - GALLIPOLI, THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER, MAD MAX 2, CROCODILE DUNDEE, MAN OF FLOWERS, SWEETIE - and a host of lesser known films. Adventure films, horror films, love stories, comedies, they're all here: the smash hits, the turkets and the quality movies appreciated by discerning audiences. Stratton tells the behind-the-scenes stories of how the films were made - or in some casxes, un-made. He talks with directors such as Peter Weir, George Miller and Paul Cox, as well as producers, writers, actors, and crew members. Their reflections and revelations form a major part of THE AVOCADO PLANTATION." [Taken from book jacket]Notes: Includes indexISBN: 0732902509LON: 7520974Donation: Simon WincerID2: 255

A history of 1970s experimental film : Britain's decade of diversity / Patti Gaal-Holmes London: Palgrave Macmillan, 2015.

It acts as a form of reclamation by integrating films having received inadequate historical and critical recognition and placing these alongside films existing as accepted texts of the decade. This history challenges the problematic 'return to image' thesis, providing examples of written evidence and demonstrating how this has problematically perpetuated a flawed account of the decade. This is the first extensive overview of 1970s filmmaking, contextualizing films within broader aesthetic, theoretical and socio-political frameworks. The detailed textual and comparative analyses offer unique approaches to individual films, shedding light on technical, aesthetic and economic decisions informing filmmaking. As such, it provides a unique understanding of how experimental filmmaking grew from a small handful of films and filmmakers, at the start of the 1970s, to a veritable 'explosion' in filmmaking by the end of the decade"-- TROVENotes: Includes bibliographical references and indexISBN: 9781349474912Language: EnglishContents: Introduction -- 1. London's Arts Labs and the 60s avant-garde / David Curtis New Barnet, U.K: John Libbey Publishing,
Author: Curtis, David Edition: 2020Place: New Barnet, U.KPublisher: John Libbey PublishingPhysDes: vi, 170 pages : llustrated ; 25 cmSubject: AVANT-GARDE FILMS ; BOWIE, DAVID ; LE GRICE, MALCOLM ; ONO, YOKO ; WARHOL, ANDY ; CANTRILL, ARTHUR & CORINNE Summary: This is the story of two short-lived artist-run spaces that are associated with some of the most innovative developments in the arts in Britain in the late 1960s. The Drury Lane Arts Lab (1967–69) was home to the first UK screenings of Andy Warhol's twin-screen 3 hour film Chelsea Girls, challenging exhibitions (John and Yoko / John Latham / Takis / Roelof Louw), poetry and music (first UK performance of Erik Satie's 24-hour Vexations) and fringe theatre (People Show / Freehold / Jane Arden's Vagina Rex and the Gas Oven / Will Spoor Mime Theatre). The Robert Street 'New Arts Lab' (1969–71) housed Britain's first video workshop TVX, the London Filmmakers Co-op's first workshop and a 5-days-a-week cinema devoted to showing new work by moving-image artists (David Larcher / Malcolm Le Grice / Sally Potter / Carolee Schneemann / Peter Gidal). It staged J G Ballard's infamous Crashed Cars exhibition and John & Dianne Lifton's pioneering computer-aided dance/mime performances.
The impact of London's Labs led to an explosion of new artist-led spaces across Britain. This book relates the struggles of FACOP (Friends of the Arts Council Operative) to make the case for these new kinds of space and these new art-forms and the Arts Council's hesitant response – in the context of a popular press already hostile to youth culture, experimental art and the 'underground'. Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is Australia's most revered celebration of cinema. It is one of the world's oldest and most storied film festivals, continuously running since 1952. To commemorate MIFF’s 70th anniversary, Black Inc. has partnered with the festival to produce an exciting collection of essays on Melbourne-made cinema.
Melbourne has a long, rich and diverse film history. It was the city where the first ever feature-length film was screened in 1906 – The Story of the Kelly Gang. It was also the birthplace of classics like Monkey Grip, Ghosts … of the Civil Dead, The Castle and Mad Max, plus many fascinating shorts and experimental films. Melbourne on Film is both a celebration of filmmaking in Melbourne, and a tribute to the city’s unique creative history.
The first collection of its kind, it includes personal reflections on the legacy and influence of these key films by some of the city’s favourite writers, including Christos Tsiolkas, Sarah Krasnostein, John Safran, Osman Faruqi, Tristen Harwood and Judith Lucy. Melbourne on Film will be treasured by cinephiles and readers of intelligent essays on arts and culture. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781760643928

Outside interference : The politics of Australian broadcasting / Richard Harding Melbourne: Sun Books, 1979.
Call No: 19AUS HARAuthor: Harding, Richard Source: ATPlace: MelbournePublisher: Sun BooksPubDate: 1979PhysDes: viii, 219 pages : illustrations ; 22 cmSubject: AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING COMMISSION ; AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING TRIBUNAL ; BROADCASTING. AUSTRALIA ; ECONOMICS AND TV. AUSTRALIA ; LEGISLATION. AUSTRALIA ; PROGRAMME COMPLAINTS ; PROGRAMME CONTENT. AUSTRALIA ; PUBLIC BROADCASTING. AUSTRALIA ; RADIO AND TV. AUSTRALIA ; SPORT ON TV. AUSTRALIA ; STATE AND THE MEDIA. AUSTRALIA ; STATE AND TV. AUSTRALIA ; TELEVISION. AUSTRALIA ; FRASER, MALCOLM ; GYNGELL, BRUCE ; PACKER, KERRY ; ALVIN PURPLE (AT, Tim Burstall, 1973) Summary: "In recent years the Australian Broadcasting Commission has been racked with storm and strife. The public mud-slinging and political gesturing that has kept it in the news have been accompanied by the simmering background of internal wars that affect the media monolith. Professor Richard Harding has been a man inside the ABC - among the men with the hottest seats and the best views of the bloody circus, the Commissioners. His brilliant observation of the events that have occurred in his time at the ABC gives a fresh insight into many of the issues that made headlines - the Bland affair, the staff commissioner, the continuing crisis and cries of "bias" in current affairs programmes, 2JJ and access radio, FM, the department of the media, the sports coverage tangle, etc. The effects of politics and government funding on the Australian Broadcasting Commission, and the role of the ABC as an opinion maker are seen in a realistic light from the centre of affairs." - BOOK BLURBNotes: Includes bibliographic references and indexISBN: 0725103159Donation: donated by the family of Wayne Levy, 2006
