Summary: Adaptations have occurred regularly since the beginning of cinema, but little recognition has been given to avant-garde adaptations of literary or other texts. This compelling study corrects such omissions by detailing the theory and practice of alternative adaptation practices from major avant-garde directors. Avant-Garde films are often relegated to the margins because they challenge our traditional notions of what film form and style can accomplish. Directors who choose to adapt previous material run the risk of severe critical dismay; making films that are highly subjective interpretations or representations of existing texts takes courage and foresight. Summary: ‘Cantrills Filmnotes’ was a magazine edited and published by legendary filmmakers Arthur and Corinne Cantrill from 1971 to 2000. The publication reviewed independent films and videos with a focus on experimental and personal film, video art, digital media and performance and installation art. Early issues of the publication present like a homemade ’zine’, with hand drawn titles and wonderful tactile details such as a 16 mm filmstrip taped to one of the pages. This publication is an important document of the independent Australian film community. Articles included contributions from artists discussing their work, interviews and critic. International and local film and video artists included names such as Len Lye, Harry Smith, Nam June Paik, Red Grooms, Stan Brakhage, Mike Hoolboom, Barbara Sternberg, Phil Hoffman, Al Razutis, Ellie Epp, Aggy Read, Garry Shead, Lynsey Martin, Jim Wilson, Jas Duke, Paul Winkler and of course Corinne and Arthur Cantrill Cantrills Filmnotes ceased publication with the issue December 1999-January 2000 (#93-100) due to lack of funding and financial support. -- AFIRC

In The Filming of Modern Life, Malcolm Turvey examines five films from the avant-garde canon and the complex, sometimes contradictory, attitudes toward modernity they express: Rhythm 21 (Hans Richter, 1921), Ballet mecanique (Dudley Murphy and Fernand Leger, 1924), Entr'acte (Francis Picabia and Rene Clair, 1924), Un chien Andalou (Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel, 1929), and Man with a Movie Camera (Dziga Vertov, 1929). All exemplify major trends within European avant-garde cinema of the time, from abstract animation to "cinema pur." Turvey argues that these films share a concern with modernization and the rapid, dislocating changes it was bringing about. He critically addresses major theories of the avant-garde and its relation to modern life, including the claim that film is "distracting" in the same way as a modern environment, and he challenges the standard view of the avant-garde as implacably opposed to bourgeois modernity. In fact, he writes, not only was there considerable disagreement among avant-garde movements about what aspects of modern life needed transformation, but the positions of individual avant-garde artists toward modernization were complex, even contradictory. All five films that Turvey analyzes embrace and resist, in their own ways, different aspects of modernity.
