This book examines a wide range of Australian films to trace their Gothic resemblances, characteristics and meanings. By concentrating on the occurrence of Gothic motifs, characters, landscapes and narratives, it argues for the recognition and relevance of a coherent Gothic heritage in Australian film. A plethora of Gothic representatives are considered in relation to four consistent and illuminating continuities (images of the family, ideas of monstrosity, generic hybridity and the occurrence of the sublime), and this study debates the appearance and asserts the significance of Australian Gothic films within their national, cultural, literary and cinematic traditions. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781786838896Contents: List of illustrations -- Introduction -- Familiarity -- Monstrosity -- Hybridity -- Sublimity -- Conclusion -- Filmography -- Bibliography -- Index

Avengers Assemble! is a vibrant and theoretically informed interrogation of one of the defining and most financially successful film franchises of the new millennium. In the first single-authored monograph on the topic of the Marvel cinematic universe, this book asks, "Why has the superhero genre reemerged so emphatically in recent years?" In an age where people have stopped going to the cinema as frequently as they used to, they returned to it in droves for the superhero film. What is it about these films that has resonated with audiences all around the globe? Are they just disposable pop culture artifacts or might they have something interesting to say about the fears and anxieties of the world we live in today? Beginning with Iron Man in 2008, this study provocatively explores both the cinematic and the televisual branches of the series across ten dynamic and original chapters from a diverse range of critical perspectives which analyse their status as an embodiment of the changing industrial practices of the blockbuster film and their symbolic potency as affective cultural artifacts that are profoundly immersed in the turbulent political climate of the era in which they were made." -- BOOK BACK COVERNotes: Formerly CIP; Includes bibliographical references and index; Also issued onlineISBN: 9780231186254Donation: Senses of CinemaContents: 1. Using the dialectic of colour and monochrome as a starting point, Paul Coates explores the symbolic meanings that colour bears in different cultures, and engages with a range of critical approaches to filmic colour, building on the work of such theorists as Sergei Eisenstein, Rudolf Arnheim and Stanley Cavell.
Coates also provides close analyses of films by directors such as Antonioni, Bergman, Godard, Hitchcock, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Sirk, Kieslowski, Tarkovsky, Von Trier and Zhang Yimou. Coates' focus is on films that deliberately exploit the rich multiplicity of cultural meanings and associations ascribed to colour, including All That Heaven Allows, Deux ou trois choses que je sais d'elle, The Double Life of Véronique, The Flight of the Red Balloon, Red Desert, Schindler's List, Silent Light, Solaris, The Three Colours Trilogy and The Wizard of Oz. Godard's own persona - cultural hero, fierce loner, shrewd businessman - projects similarly shifting images. In the modern canon, he is a figure as mysterious as he is indispensible. Now, acclaimed critic Richard Brody offers the fullest picture yet of Godard's life and work, demsytifying the elusive filmmaker through hundreds of interviews with friends, relatives, and collaborators. He vividly depicts Godard's wealthy family, his changeable and often disturbing politics, his tumultuous dealings with fellow filmmakers, and his troubled relations with women. Tracing an arc from the director's early writing, through his popular success with Breathless and Contempt, to the grand vision of his later years, Everything Is Cinema shows decisively that Godard's films have left their mark on all screens, everywhere. -- BOOK BLURBNotes: "NBCC Award. From his clutch of provocative and award-winning shorts in the mid-1990s to his increasingly celebrated features, including Swimming Pool, Les Amants criminels, and 5x2, as well as the star-studded, millenial classic of high camp, 8 femmes, Ozon's films have remaned silmultaneously seductive and experimental, playful and gruesome. What emerges from Andrew Asibong's passionate and highly engaged scrutiny of Ozon's cinema, however, is the extent to which the director's breezily confrontational work throws up urgent and unavoidable questions about the cinematic representation of pyschic, familial, social, and even ontological transformation. Asibong considers how Ozon's apparently subversive explorations of feminine and 'queer' desire, as well as his ongoing fascination with sadomasochistic power relations, all operate at a far more ambivalent psychoanalytic and political level than either Ozon's champions or detractors seem willing to admit. He then goes on to suggest that what may be at stake in Ozon's alternatively utopian and cynical flirtation with the construction and deconstruction of contemporary human relationships on film." Seizing on the way these differences are accentuated, sensationalized, and eroticized on the screen - most often with little apparent regard for the political context in which they operate - Willis restores that context through close readings of a range of movies from cinematic blockbusters to the work of the new auteurs, Spike Lee, David Lynch, and Quentin TarantinoNotes: Includes bibliographical references (p. - A Rule of thumb suggests a sequel will gross about 10 to 20 per cent less than its predecessor; studios relish this security in an otherwise very uncertain business.
- To maintain integrity a sequel must feature some elements of the original, such as key cast and the calibre of the director (if not the same director). But some franchises have been so well released they built on the original audience
- Box Office numbers dropped 10 per cent in 2005 and bounced back in 2006, but not to the 907 million gross that Australian cinemas had achieved in 2004

It explores the place of The Hunger Games in the history of youth-oriented cinema; in the history of speculative fiction centred on adolescents; in a network of continually evolving and tightly connected popular genres; and in the popular history of changing ideas about girlhood from which a successful action hero like Katniss Everdeen could emerge. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9781138683068Contents: Introduction ‘The Hunger Games’

Merchants of Menace: The Business of Horror Cinema responds to a major void in film history by shedding much-needed new light on the economic dimensions of one of the world's most enduring audiovisual forms. Given horror cuts across budgetary categories, industry sectors, national film cultures, and media, Merchants of Menace also promises to expand understandings of the economics of cinema generally. Covering 1930-present, this groundbreaking collection boasts fourteen original chapters from world-leading experts taking as their focus such diverse topics as early zombie pictures, post-WWII chillers, Civil Rights-Era marketing, Hollywood literary adaptations, Australian exploitation, "torture-porn" Auteurs, and twenty-first-century remakes." - Publisher's WebsiteNotes: Formerly CIP; Includes bibliographical references and index; Also issued onlineISBN: 9781623564209Contents: -- Production lines, trends, and cycles. Drawing on many popular and some lesser known films from around the world, Christopher Falzon introduces students to key areas in philosophy, like: Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, The Theory of Knowledge, The Self and Personal Identity, Critical Thinking.
Perfect for beginners, this book guides the reader through philosophy using illuminating cinematic works, like Avatar, Inception, Fight Club, Wings of Desire, Run Lola Run, A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner, Dirty Harry and many other films.
The fully revised and updated Third Edition features: an expanded introduction that provides a new discussion of the relationship between film and philosophy; new material on notable philosophers such as Aristotle, Merleau-Ponty and Rawls; and coverage of new topics like virtue ethics and what Socrates offers for critical thinking. An updated glossary, references and bibliography, and a filmography, are also included in the Third Edition. -- publisher's web siteNotes: Includes glossaryISBN: 9780415538169Contents: Preface -- Introduction -- 1 - Plato’s Picture Show - the theory of knowledge -- 2 - All of Me - the self and personal identity -- 3 - Crimes and Misdemeanors - moral philosophy -- 4 - Antz - social and political philosophy -- 5 - Modern Times - society, science, and technology -- 6 - The Holy Grail - critical thinking -- Further Reading -- Glossary -- Bibliography -- Filmography -- Index

From Monsters Inc. to Toy Story and Wall-E, Pixar's animated characters take on human qualities that demand more than just cultural analysis. What animates the human subject according to Pixar? What are the ideological implications of that animation?
Pixar with Lacan has the double aim of analyzing pixar films while at once exemplifying important psychoanalytic concepts (the voice, the gaze, the partial object, the Other, the object a, the primal father, the name-of-the-father, symbolic castration, the imaginary/the real/the symbolic, desire and drive, the four discourses, masculine/feminine). In so doing , Lilian Munk Rosing expertly examines the ideological implications of the images of human existance in Pixar films.-- BOOK BACK COVERNotes: Formerly CIP; Includes bibliographical references and indexISBN: 9781501320170Contents: -- Introduction -- Beyond the Name of the Father: Toy Story -- Big O is Watching You: Toy Story 2 -- Sadism in the Kindergarten: Toy Story 3 -- entertainment as warfare : A Bug's Life -- There is Nothing More Toxic than a Human Child: Monsters, Inc -- Just Keep Swimming: Finding Nemo -- More than Super: The Incredibles -- the Mother Road: Cars -- Man is a Puppet, Soul is a Rat: Ratatouille -- Humanity Stuck in Vacation Hell: Wall-E -- His Master's Voice: Up -- epilogue: animation and capitalism -- references -- filmography -- index --

The uncanny child in transnational cinema : ghosts of futurity at the turn of the twenty-first century / Jessica Balanzategui Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2018.

Night Shyamalan, 1999) ; HORROR FILMS ; CHILDREN IN FILMS Summary: The Uncanny Child in Transnational Cinema illustrates how global horror film depictions of children re-conceptualised childhood at the turn of the twenty-first century. By analysing an influential body of transnational horror films, largely stemming from Spain, Japan, and the US, Jessica Balanzategui shows how millennial uncanny child characters resist embodying growth and futurity, unravelling concepts to which the child's symbolic function is typically bound. The book proposes that complex cultural and industrial shifts at the turn of the millennium resulted in these potent cinematic renegotiations of the concept of childhood. By demonstrating both the culturally specific and globally resonant properties of these frightening visions of children who refuse to grow up, the book outlines the conceptual and aesthetic mechanisms by which long entrenched ideologies of futurity, national progress, and teleological history started to waver at the turn of the twenty-first century. -- publisher's web siteISBN: 9789462986510

With contributions from a diverse group of scholars, the chapters analyze issues that include gender, sexuality, disability, class, and race. The contributors pose intriguing questions about the franchise, such as: What do “mutants” really represent? What role do women and people of color play in the narratives? Why does it matter that Professor X is disabled? Why is Mystique often shown naked? What facilitated Wolverine’s rise to prominence? And how do topics regarding identity, trauma, and bioethics, figure in the stories? Exploring issues relevant for a multicultural world and connecting thematic elements from the films to political debates and social struggles, the book seeks to make a thoughtful contribution to the scholarship of popular culture. However, many of its films are incredibly besotted with a nostalgic longing for the past. From the Toy Story trilogy to the first Cars film, many of Pixar’s films are about chasing what used to be instead of embracing the future. In this book, published on the 20th anniversary of the original Toy Story’s release, Josh Spiegel examines some of the films from Pixar and Disney over the past 20 years that have embodied one of the most important lines of dialogue in Disney history, courtesy of theme-park narration: “Here, tomorrow is today. And yesterday is forever.” -- BOOK BACK COVER BLURBISBN: 9781941629239Contents: -- acknowledgments -- introduction -- Toy Story and Cars -- Toy Story 2 and Up -- Toy Story 3 and Monsters University -- Disney animation in the 2010s -- conclusion -- notes -- about the author --
